On the British Airways flight from LA to London yesterday, they wanted everyone to board via biometric ID. I asked if I could opt out, and the guy at the desk said, “No, it’s required.” I said, “I’m not comfortable giving my biometric ID to companies which get hacked all the time.” He said “It’s the US government that gets the data.” I told him that was even worse, and he said I could talk to his supervisor.

Supervisor said, yeah, just show your boarding pass over on the side. So I (and my family) did.

Always ask. Always opt out.

I'm choosing not to visit the US for the foreseeable future.

Asia is my go to place now.

Where do you like in Asia Mike?

Many places, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore.

On my list to visit in the next couple of years:

Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Phillipines

#Asia not uniform on this.

#Vietnam - no biometrics yet, that i could detect.

#Thailand - full fingerprinting for sure, including children, and face scan, if i recollect correctly.

#Singapore - thumb prints, face scan.

#Philippines - face scan, fully orwellian database entry requirement, before you even get on the flight there.

#Dubai - face scan.

#Turkiye - no formal biometrics for transfer yet, but i think surreptitious face scan in that hallway after the transfer carryon inspection abuse. I don’t go there to visit, because the visa is basically Shengen, if i remember correctly.

They blur together somewhat, because i have to travel around Asia so much, via flying prison vans the airlines have become.

#1984 is a staple instruction manual here, except Vietnam for now.

#Malaysia - no biometrics i could detect.

Strangely even Vn is seen as ‘one party communist’ state from western lense, it still has lots of room to fly under the radar for a foreigner that just want to be left alone with this bs

Thanks

Good to know

Unreal, but all too predictable

American citizens can still opt out of biometric boarding pass for now. Airlines don't make it easy on purpose.

Non-US citizens cannot opt out. In your case, British citizens cannot opt out.

Great Britain has fallen, its over for them.

"It's the US Government that gets the data" was intended as reassurance? 😂

haha, I know seriously

Also, thank you for this!

YES. THEY WILL OFTEN PUSH BACK BUT THEY ARE REQUIRED TO SIMPLY CHECK BOARDING PASS / ID MANUALLY IF YOU ASK TO OPT OUT.

You can opt out of the body scanners as well. I always do

What do you say to opt out?

I tell them I’d like to opt out of the body scanner. They call over a female guard who asks if it’s ok to do a pat down. I answer yes to that- I haven’t tried saying no, but maybe I should try it next time 😆

I’d rather the pat down than naked scans of myself in their keeping

In #HK, had to go through a face scan just to go from one terminal to another during transfer!

Then another face scan for boarding.

Not sure there was an opt out; mine shall be never to go through Hong Kong again.

“It’s required”. What a piece of shit

yeah that first dude was a weasel.

What's good with realID?

I wished I had pushed back harder on this.

What's up with realID

They already have your biometric ID data. You didn’t opt out of their access to your data, you just opted out of them comparing it to the database it already exists within.

how do you know this?

sure, but either way, why comply?

That’s surely your prerogative, but people should know they’ve already got the data and compliance or not, the choice has no bearing on their data collection abilities.

Extremely insightful. Thank you!

What biometric data did they want? Iris scan, fingerprint, etc?

We’re probably headed that way in which biometric data is commonly used as a form of identity.

I started writing a story about this like 10 years ago set in a futuristic NYC (year 2046 — but obvi technology has become way more accelerated so date needs to be adjusted) in which keys were obsolete and replaced by biometric scans to open apartment doors.

iris scan

It’s faster than getting fingerprints and probably safer.

Fingerprints could be easily duped but not sure if they could replicate someone’s unique iris.

boarding at tiny Daytona Beach and see the camera + sign. I am the only person at security. gruff looking white bearded statsi waiting for me.

"I will opt out of the photo please"

"what are you afraid of?" says the statsi filth looking perturbed

if you decline then they have to manually verify your passport photo matches you, quite possibly the lamest excuse for data gathering ever.

they are laying out the infrastructure for the social credit system, prepare accordingly.

One day it won't be optional, and I fear that day is fast approaching comrade.

and I was thinking of traveling.. Crap. it's happening. 😫

WTF is biometric ID ? Feels like Chinese communist shit

Great story Chris, it's important to be an example for others. It can be done, but most people have to choose non-compliance. On Opt-Out-Day on 24 November 2010 airport security just let everyone through without checks, fearing chaos from expected protests. But you have to wonder if it's not too late, with most people being scared of their own shadow.
