anybody wanna argue about anything? I’ve got some time to kill.
Discussion
what that I’ve written or said publicly do you most disagree with and wanna fight about?
Lol
Big fan of your writing. Wanna argue about that?
yeah my writing sucks, what’s wrong with you. are you dumb or something?
You calling me dumb!?
Ok, I got an idea.
What do you think of ordinals?
bad in that they’re hella dumb and susceptible to scamming and degeneracy - the idea they are “good for adoption” is retarded because the proponents have an extremely short-sighted and high time preference attitude about the reputational impact, in that not all attention is useful attention; neutral in that who am I to say? it’s a public tool and how I feel about how people use it is of absolutely zero importance to anything; neutral once again in that it’s clearly a fad that has already enormously died down and a lot of the scaremongering about the impact was even more laughably stupid than the ordinals themselves; good in that it probably won’t ever die down completely and so it seems like there is now a permanent block space buyer of last resort; good once again in that expansions of utility that don’t endanger decentralisation or consensus are definitionally good because we have to be humble in admitting we don’t know what will come from them. something significantly less retarded than monkey jpegs could be right around the corner.
#[3] said this the other day, I think but I can’t be bothered finding the note: “but there are orphans in Africa who can’t afford the bandwidth” was surely peak retarded cringe.
surely?
SURELY?!?
Yeah I’ve gone back and forth on it too. I’m no expert but I share a split view on each aspect of it, like you. I guess it depends on how we prioritize each thing. Like is buyer of last resort more important than congested block space if block space remains constant? I’d certainly put buyer of last resort, block space, and freedom of use above good for adoption in my hierarchy of importance…
put it this way, if monkey jpegs are really going to outbid lightning channel openings in a hyperbitcoinized world, then wtf is the point? any fee is a good fee and if we can’t structure the incentives such that people are willing to pay for legit use cases then we’ve lost.
and in fact, who is to even say what is and is not “legit” if not the market? so it’s all begging the question anyway.
Yeah. If the free market wants things that are detrimental to the whole thing then we’re fucked.
…and I’ll blame crypto if it happens.
Then again, I don’t currently mine and I don’t buy jpegs so it’s tough for me to decide whether anything should be done about it or whether we let the free market decide.
I lean towards the latter even though I in no way support them.
Miner friends of mine would disagree, especially given recent mining economics.
Any censorship on any transaction, ever, and I'm out.
Immutability and censorship-resistance is the value.
I think that even if you are as critical as you could possibly imagine - say you think ordinals are literally the work of the Devil, out to thwart our glorious future of a decentralised money - then you still have to treat it at the following conceptual level if you are being intellectually honest: this is just spam. if we can’t deal with spam, then we really are fucked. a globally distributed network, inherently adversarial to nation state money printers, cannot subsist on begging and shaming people out of spamming it. it’s either open or its not.
🎯
That’s absolutely right. It’s just spam.
…so much for arguing lol
Thanks for engaging. Good to connect with you after reading your writing for the last year.
then argue about something else.
what do you think about the continuum hypothesis? solved or no?
Sir, while I used to be good at math, I stopped at calculus and went to art school.
After looking it up, I can conclude that I need to first brush up on my math vocabulary before I even have a chance of coming to any conclusions.
yeah but just argue.
It’s clearly not solved.
OH YEAH?!? then how do you explain Gödel’s and Cohen’s proofs?!?
In retrospect, didn’t you wish it was “Apples, ostriches, and knowledge” ?
Why is your lack of foresight so stunning?
Followed 😅 just incase I wanna argued someday soon 🤜🤛
I'm still an Emily Oster fan and think you were mean about her 😅
Bitcoin's non monetary use case(it's a timestamp server) is the right answer to people who ask what bitcoin's value is "backed by". I will die on this hill.
I’d say that’s worth acknowledging as a real utility but I’d push back even further and say that assuming it is “backed by something” is a category error. you only ask what it’s backed by if you don’t understand what you are talking about.
I think it's a fair question to ask about the non monetary use cases. Without a clear explanation of what those are, people have a hard time believing that it's value won't simply collapse at some point.
Asking what it's "backed by" may not be the best phrasing, but there is a well posed question hiding in there.
sure, but only because they believe chartalist propaganda and have never actually thought about it. the only way to well-pose the question you are referring to would be something like: “how can this be different to what I am used to?”, which I think answers itself for the sufficiently intellectually curious. people who have a hard time believing its value won’t collapse will end up buying it at exactly the price they deserve.
I think you miss my goal. I am not trying to win argument with someone like Peter Schiff (who argues in bad faith), I am trying to help someone who argues in good faith but doesnt know much about bitcoin get past an obvious tripping point which otherwise shuts down their curiousity. Lots of people have trouble understanding why Bitcoin should have value given that no authority is backing it with an obvious commodity like gold.
And the timestamp server use case is a pretty fascinating use case to think about. It proves who knew (or agreed to) what when. This is a bottleneck of the legal / financial system, which makes some projects too difficult to coordinate.
The timestamp server function of Bitcoin removes this bottleneck, and may amplify the effectiveness of the legal/financial system to fund projects that would have been unthinkable before.
I get the goal, I’m just wary of this tactic. it seems like a cop-out of addressing the real issue by distracting them with something that is coincidentally also true but pretty much completely besides the point.
it’s like calling bitcoin a decentralised clock. it’s fun to play around with the idea if you are already totally onboard, but if that’s your opening gambit to convince a noob, you’re gonna end up in completely pointless discussions about what the total addressable market for clocks is.
I’ve really been enjoying my nonstick pan for eggs recently, haven’t used cast iron in a few weeks
For me it's the opposite, since I discovered that cast iron should only be washed with water and salt, no soap, I've really been enjoying the cast iron and haven't touched the nonstick pan for weeks. I also like that the cast iron pan seems to have inifinte lifetime, while nonsticks' coating always eventually peel away.
Hmmm, followed for a sound argument, but GFY bc we’re fighting.
Know what I clean the nonstick with? Water. As long as it’s just butter and eggs, I don’t even have to wipe it. Hard not to love that
dude, that sounds gross, so you just soak your nonstick pan full of egg fat and oil or butter or whatever it is you use in water and then cook in it again the next day 🤢 Congrats, you made me use the vomit emoji for the first time ever on nostr 👏
I don’t soak shit. First of all I do a clean scramble/omelette, which slides easily onto my plate. Minimal residual flecks of cooked eggs remain. These are easily rinsed off. The pan goes on the drying rack and is as clean as anything coming out of the dishwasher.
Well, that may work for you and your nonstick pan, but cast iron is a different story. I came to learn that it requires a bit more care and attention to maintain but if you give it some love, it'll never let you down.
But I guess if you're satisfied with your easy-to-clean nonstick pan, that's your choice. Just don't come crying to me when you have to replace it in a year or two because the coating has peeled off.
(never would've guessed that arguing about pans was going to be a big thing for me today!)
Blame @allen. Tbh I love my cast iron, and if I have the time to give it the needed TLC I’ll use it. I’m obsessive about the drying/storage of it. My current system dominates in terms of time efficiency tho
I terms of "high time preference efficiency" maybe yeah, got to give you that one. To each his own, as long as we all get to eat some eggs for breakfast, it's all good.
In any case, good fight!⚡
The dress was blue.

Did #PanWars ever get settled?
It confused me so much I ended up getting one of each type. Now I feel nothing. I am fully hedged but failed to make a conscious decision when it mattered.
#PanWarSurvivor
Bitcoiners often can’t recognize what is or is not good for Bitcoin. There I said it.
#[3] solved this years ago:

We should be paying more attention to Gauge theory
Won’t take off until we do
if I had to guess, and I’m just taking a stab in the dark here, it’s not something I’ve thought much about until now, I would say that Gauge Theory Does Not Fix This™
https://allenfarrington.medium.com/gauge-theory-does-not-fix-this-625f98de3246
Btw I hope it’s obvious I’m being facetious lol I don’t want to be stuck defending gauge theory.
no, it’s too late, we are full on arguing now.
Alright well you’re wrong as fuck and also I’m racist against flying squirrels.
typical gauge theorist. sigh.
Solve this and then we can talk SQUIRREL https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-301756d41524649406e45ccf6d8b4e64
did you scroll down google images results for “gauge theory” until you found one sufficiently intimidating?
What? No. Preposterous. My colleagues and I have been hard at work on this in between semi frequent bouts of rambly nonsense on the joe Rohan podcast.
Guys, thanks. Such a transformative discussion although it didn’t change much 👀
I think you’ll find the Lagrangian of this discussion didn’t change AT ALL, thank you very much.
Even this little degree of freedom is regulated. Sad
I’m amazed you have time in between all your valiant work on clubhouse.
Gauge theory!?
More like slouch theory!
Never heard of it but nah, we shouldn’t be
Gm
LMAO! Underrated comment.
OnlyFans should add zaps.
I've never explored OnlyFans but ⚡️ zaps sounds like good addition.
Interesting google, thanks 😅
all you need to know, bro
https://allenfarrington.medium.com/gauge-theory-does-not-fix-this-625f98de3246
this is fantastic. have you read “Invariances: The Structure of the Objective World” by Nozick i keep looking for a trusted voice to give me a take on it.
🍻
Man how I don’t miss those talks from Eric. Too far on the right side of the bell curve for his own good.
Okay, which one is better? All Bran or Special K?
cereal is fiat food. eat a steak and some broccoli.
also, just to get really feisty, breakfast is a scam. I am a proud two-meal maximalist. brunch and dinner, none of this “breakfast” and “lunch” bullshit like I’m a factory worker and I can only eat outside my shift on the line.
Excellent answer! Steak and broccoli are both delicious.
I disagree. Time, is in fact, killing you
