As a complete novice, why are seed oils bad for you?

Keep this as simple and concise as possible 💜

Would you drink motor oil? That’s what seed oils were made for.

Idk, a cup of 10w-40 kinda hits the spot sometimes.

Gets me insides purring like one 😂

Are you the mad dog arm wrestler from Over the top?

I put water in my car, and I drink that. I can't remember the last time I filled it up with canola oil thou.

You’re body isn’t a car🤣

It’s not! 🐶🐾🫡

Lectins. It's a defense mechanism by plants to keep propagation to the max.

What are lectins? 🤔

I'm not entirely sure but a Dr. Gundry has a study in them relating to obesity and disease.

It's a toxin

They cause inflammation. Typical history I heard was about rapeseed oil (now referred to as Canola). Was literally poisonous to humans and caused serious maladies. Then they found a way to filter most of the toxin out and sold the public that it was good for their heart (with industry funded studies as I understand it). At least that’s the short version, and I’m sure someone can correct or expand on this and other seed oils.

Agree with this. If my wife was awake she’d be able to expound more deeply on this but it’s a good starting point.

Laughing to myself imagining how most of our responses would be flagged elsewhere. 😆

I take MTC oil in my protein shakes like 3 days a week for 7 years.

It's coconut.

I have an old bottle of Bulletproof MCT I’ll use from time to time. I don’t know how they derive theirs.

It has crazy low viscosity

I know a LOT of canola farmers and at least a few people in the science part of this. I wonder how they respond to this… maybe a good podcast

Why podcasts are great! You can actually explore the details, incentives, and find the nuance. I’d love to hear different views in a respectful discussion. Long format is the only way to go!

I suspect humans have evolved with seed oils, and at low levels we don’t have good clinical research. At the same time we’ve turned it into a common additive, along with gross amounts of sugar, sweeteners, dyes, mold inhibitors, and preservatives.

Erucic acid in tiny amounts may not be dangerous 🤷‍♂️. But most are not ingesting tiny amounts. These additives are in an incredible amount of products.

We all know how 2% yearly inflation is working out for us. We should be looking at our food through a similar lens.

That 2% idea is a great one- I had my eyes opened about things in our food when I spoke with Laszlo Barabasi (godfather of network science) about his work tracking food additives and preservatives

From this day on my wife and I really changed how we prepare food and eat: https://youtu.be/XELyAQ-68KA

I will definitely check this out. Also have your Ep 210 on my Fountain list today after RHR finishes.

It was a good RHR today they were talking a ton about encryption messages. I like how they are now incorporating notes about Nostr updates.

I guess file sharing is coming online.

BTW thanks for the zaps - I spot them over to Fountain and keep streaming and boosting over there- I want Fountain to succeed

I get it. I boost both places. Looking forward to all of it integrating. Wonder how something like that would work between RSS and nostr relays without cannibalizing the model. The Fountain devs have been doing great work.

In case you didnt know, fountain changed their fine print 😔 it is probably for the sustainability of their platform, but earning everyday has stopped. They added promotions and the ability for users to pay listeners for their attention on the home screen, but I havent gotten paid for my #[4] backlog listening for a week 😭. Guess my scheme is up 😂 but fountain is still cool amd making clips is easier even of mine are not heard in the larger community 🤔

It’s machine lubricant

I run myself like a machine 👀💜

Is it actually?

The only thing I found was potential damage to mitochondria and a single study on rats.

Have not seen anything else beyond “trust me, because I said so”.

Happy to look at actual studies if anyone has links.

And by look I mean I’ll plug it into chatgpt4 and have it summarized for me because I’m too lazy.

I’ve not done any research about this either, but so far it seems everybody just saying “trust me, bro, it just is” 🤷‍♂️💜

It totally could be, who knows with food anymore these days.

Would be interested in seeing some actual studies also 💜

It’s kinda ironic. Some Bitcoiners rightfully harp on wrong and biased studies by anti-bitcoiners but then readily accept stuff that sounds right without serious scrutiny.

I’ve seen too many cases where headlines made rounds on studies that were not even statistically significant without anyone questioning them to believe anything I read without lookin at it myself.

Seems like the general concept is some seed oils are essentially industrial food-like substances and are widely present in highly processed foods. Peter Van Valkenburgh has written on it a fair amount and—from within the rabbit hole—posted charts and research on twitter

Cool. Would look at studies in the original form.

I have some bookmarked on a computer which I don’t have access to until tomorrow. I’ll see if I can easily find them and will send them your way if so.

Actually, we don’t ever trust, we verify. And seed oils are bad. Do your own research. Trust no one.

🤦‍♂️ that’s another fallacy readily propagated by bitcoiners but whatever, im not willing to start a war here 🙃 ✌️

There is a history that is important.

Primarily American capitalistic consumer industrialization of food type history.

“Research” is corrupted by money.

If it tastes good, it’s bad for you, is a saying my grandmother always Had.

Seed oils are a foundation of shelf stable foods that taste way too good for how long they can sit on a shelf.

Does steak taste good? Is it bad for you?

😈

But yeah, I get what you’re saying.

Lol, we palm oil country ppl have a lot to say abt seed oil gangsta :) maybe chatgpt might tell you the bully tactics they implemented :)

But also check out the the way it’s processed. And the various saturated fats (poly, mono) optimal temp to be used as well as it’s omega content. Alternatively butter, lard ghee, coconut oil, palm oil is a good option highly because of the temp it withstands before it breaks.

Do you bleach or chemically refine the rest of the food you eat?

Depends on the seed, a lot use some pretty harsh washing and clarifying agents like hexane that are of concern. Olive, avacado, even sunflower oil are all generally pretty good. Animal fats seen to be better overall, and that's mainly down to it being a more natural, less refined food source.

Additionally, the plants only want you to eat the seed if you will pass it to a place where it can grow. If our digestion, or processing, makes that impossible, that plant makes a seed that inflamed our body and eventually enjoying a level of suffering.

I think this is probably the case with many, but probably not all, seeds. Nut oils, and seeds where the oil comes mostly from the flesh VS the pit are usually safer.

I still prefer animal fats when possible.
