I want to start taking magnesium but I don’t want to be sleepy during the day and then for the “take it at night” crowd I don’t like being extra groggy taking care of the baby at 3am so what do
Discussion
Start with magnesium citrate and not magnesium glicinate, also go with low doses first, around 300mg of elemental magnesium. It may loosen your stools as well.
Was always told magnesium malate was the one you want if you don't want to get sleepy. Was the choice by pro bodybuilders I've rubbed elbows with.
Citrate and glycinate are good because they absorb better, I use them more in a clinical setting. Malate is good too.
Yeah, I use citrate myself but I use it for the stool benefits you mentioned.
I just know when I used to train in a bodybuilding gym, they would often include that in their pre-workout stacks.
Unironically don't take it. The baby stuff is brutal but once that levels out (1 year old) then you'll think more clearly and get to embrace new challenges like actually getting a toddler to go to sleep before midnight....
Tldr. Magnesium can be skipped. Focus on getting whatever rest you can, when you can. And high-five dad. You're both doing great!
I sleep fairly well I’ve just heard that magnesium can be good for blood pressure!
I'm not doc. Just Doug, so maybe I have bad opinions! I always say for blood pressure, just make sure you have a good workout program with a heavy dose of meditation and stretching.
Again. I'm just Doug.
Can’t help. I recently found out the magnesium I used wasn’t the right one. It was in combination with something else not providing the right stuff for my body.
Too damn complex those bodies. Would be great if we would have built in meters
FOR REAL
It’s not really that impactful.
I split it up morning , lunch and then the largest dose in evening (you should also mix up the type of magnesium)
solid info. short and to the point too
I like soaking chia seeds for gel state water and they are high in magnesium and aren’t medicine-like (but they do look weird and make your water a little like frog water)
Omg as a trypophobe this made me want to puke 😂😂😂 but I appreciate the tip!
Wow I didn’t know the word trypophobia, good to know this is a thing!
Funny story, I didn’t know what it was when I first had an experience with it. I was in grade school and saw a microscopic photograph of a human tongue and almost threw up. Then when I got older I found there was a name for it..because I’d get physically uncomfortable seeing lotus seeds 🤮🤮🤮, actual tripe, certain bubble formations… idk I guess I’m not as evolved as other humans hahaha it’s a natural built in fear as many predatory animals and whatnot sport the pattern. Allegedly.
I'm no expert but if magnesium makes sleep quality better, maybe you would not be groggy after sleeping better/deeper for a little while at least? But yeah, feel you, having one 3-monther myself and trying to survive (again)
true…the prolonged interrupted sleep is probably part of it hahaha.
Microdose throughout the day?
I have the magnesium in spray form and generally I think it works better than pills for me. Spray it on the bottom of your feet and any part of your body that hurts before you sleep.
I don't think it makes me groggy. Not the way melatonin would. But 3am wakeups are rare for me these days so I'm always struggling through those. I'm here for you if you want sleep training tips.
Whenever I take magnesium I feel absolutely nothing. I think Coffein neutralizes it and still keeps me awake.
Eat foods that have more magnesium in them 😋
I can ask my wife if you want. She is a nutritionist and would know better than me.
Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to get adequate magnesium from food these days due to over-farming and soil degradation 😔
Take it in the morning after breakfast
There are many types of magnesium and some that aren’t necessarily categorized as sleep aids:

just put this in your water. you will not be groggy

Take 6pm
The main reason is often to overdose magnesium. Try to take less and see what happens. Good counter combinations to avoid grogginess are Vitamin B complex, Ferrum, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), Ginseng, Coffein, Rhodiola roses or Acetyl-L-Carnitin (ALCAR). I hope I've written everything cause I'm not native speaker.
It doesn't make me sleepy. Try it and see if your body objects.
yeah, it has no impact except increasing calm and decreasing muscle resting tension
I take magnesium glicinat 100mg every day around 10am and I feel great all day
take it around dinner time
Thats not how magnesium works. Take it in 2 to 3 separate doses throughout the day with the last being close to bedtime. You won't feel sleepy during the day and it definitely won't make you groggy ever, it's just not that potent.
also, take more than recommended not less as the guidelines are set by fiat minded people who know nothing.
Another thing, I take a combination of mag citrate and glycinate, with glycinate being the form that helps the most with sleep. I combine with glycine for added sleep benefits right before bed.
If you have the dough you can spring for the ultimate form of magnesium called threonate. It's the only form that has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier which supposedly increases the benefits greatly. I haven't tried it yet but it's on my list.
yeah, magnesium's only possible effect aside from making you feel less tense and nervous is diarrhea lol
my aunty put me onto boron, also, just to mention - magnesium is the least easily absorbed mineral, and intestinal irritation can cause deficiency
but in addition, boron deficiency can cause magnesium and calcium deficiency
i just want to mention that because it can be the case your diet is fine but your kidneys are eliminating it because you aren't getting enough boron
i don't know why this is and there is very little information available at all as to how this even works but it is acknowledged by many researchers that boron deficiency has a cascade effect of causing magnesium and calcium deficiency
I have taken magnesium for years. I take SlowMag (143 mg magnesium chloride) in the morning and Magtein (1000 mg magnesium l-threonate) at bedtime. SlowMag has no ill effects. Magtein takes some getting used to, but now makes me sleep like a baby.
When I started Magtein, I would go right to sleep but wake up 4 hours later. After going back to sleep, I would feel groggy in the morning. It took about a month to get over both side effects.
My wife makes tallow based lotions/soaps and magnesium lotions. We would love to send one for you to try! Message me and we could ship one out. https://www.doanesteadfarm.com/shop/magnesium-lotions/32
It’s not a sleeping pill. It’s not that strong lmao
I take MagSRT...no issues with sleepiness. Here is a nice summary of the different types of magnesium
Here is a different format for magnesium cheat sheet.
Magnesium Malate
supplementing with Vitamin D same time is essentiel for absoption, try and find out which time suits you best
you need to take a lot more than necessary for it to make you tired. i take it twice a day, first at 4am shortly after waking up
I just ordered this one last week. it literally made me feel like a new person same day I started taking it. I am not feeling sleepy. taking it with food three times a day. this is a high quality brand btw. I recommend it.

Ditch the kid 😉
Melatonin can make you tired. Never ever heard magnesium making you tired? I take huge amounts of magnesium… Magnesium salt before the gym, L-threonate for brain at lunch and dinner, bisglycinat before bedtime.
Just add unrefined seal salt to your drinking water. This way you will get all the minerals you need, no suplementation needed. Search for Darko Velcek.
sleep-inducing effects of magnesium are somewhat overrated. Simply take 200 mg of magnesium citrate per day.
