What's your favorite feature on nostr thus far? And don't say decentralization. GO!
Discussion
Feels early web so far. That’s the catch for me. I love cozy places.
The community is small and close knit. It's great!
Running own relay so I can have an archive of my notes that no one can lock me out of
FOLLOWED 🖖🏼! #plebchain #bitcoin
That it lets you own your data without running a server!
Small hyper focussed community. Like earlier stage internet projects and protocols.
Agree
I remember my first experience of ftp. Irc. Gopher. Usenet. All defining for my interest in tech. This is just like that only more of my kind of people grouped up already.
Most of the early internet tools were sufficiently decentralized. However, the problem to solve became *discovery*, and most of the commercial internet success stories solved that problem…Google Facebook Twitter Reddit etc. nostr neatly addresses the discovery problem by putting more of the power into the individual’s hands. But there will certainly be new problems to solve….
Wow, nostr feels so “clean”. I forgot what it felt like to use the web without keeping my defenses up. Always feel like I’m constantly tracked or being sold to.
Feels wholesome for sure
🤙🏼
I’m scared I won’t know what to buy.
i guess that depends on your client, but yes, for the most part they're all really clean... and really buggy astral the past 2 days has been mostly unusable for me crashing tabs and my entire browser. but i have faith that things will improve as time permits.
prob one of the things I’m most curious/excited to see from nostr are the tools ppl build to enable ppl to more easily solve the discovery problem themselves
Free Speech is Code. Bitcoin and Nostr will challenge all who oppose and once again become a litmus test for tyranny.
Nothing stops the decentralized train if done openly, properly, in the hands of the Pleb community.
This is absolutely a very cool feature.
People playing with relay incentives seems the most promising.
And I think there’s a lot of opportunity in boosts for true network spread. RT def changed Twitter.
Aa this earlier today:
“Mastodon's decentralized nature raises concerns about the legal risks for users hosting instances, which must comply with copyright and privacy laws globally”
This issue could come up for Nostr relays.
Wack-a-Mole
It def will come up. So maybe that argues for default relay list to be spread in as many different jurisdictions as possible, and not purely on ping times.
Relays on Tor. Like Lightning nodes behind Tor.
Tor is going to need to get faster and more reliable then. It's been unusable for 7 months now. Hopefully Jack's recent round of funding will allow them to hire devs and they can work on their DDoS problem.
I have been saying this for a while Tor is the Achilles heel for Lightning nodes. It has to get better. So everyone should consider supporting tor project.
☝️
looking forward to seeing how this develops. would be excited to earn sats for hosting data / running a relay
We've been discussing relay incentives and paid relay services. It's something that we'll need to find a happy medium on at some point. Right now it's probably too early and would be a turn off. #[3] have a lot to discuss.
One simple one seems to be image hosting. But obviously has trade offs
Well, not really a feature, but it feels a lot closer with everyone here and a unified sense of purpose—It’s really exciting and important. The buy-in is strong!
💯
I saw a Nostr.spaces. Would love to see more of this. One of the big reasons I used Twitter in the past.
Lightning is pretty cool. NGL navigation and setup is a bit tricky for noobs like myself. However, there’s been some pretty cool folks on here that are willing to lend advice. Best part is the creators are so hands on right now. Keeps me coming back knowing the passion surrounding the platform.
Like Bitcoin taught me how to UTXO, Nester is teaching me how do permissions between nodes or relays or data stores in-between computers work.
Bootstrapping my self to understand software by curiosity!
No censorship, even otherwise we could probably run our own relay and circumvent it, Nostr also features more than what Twitter would do, maybe even an E2E encrypted Signal alternative, a reddit alternative, no ads (For now) and more concentrated Bitcoin focused userbase.
It makes scrolling Twitter feel like watching MSM on TV
Lighting is nice but it’s mostly the community and general feeling that we are early in something that is going to become much bigger.
Client/protocol
This app built on it plus the knowledge that I own this experience via my 🔑s
no shitcoins 🧡
The rawness 🤙🏽🔥🤙🏽
Gif avatar support on many clients :D
not really a feature,
being able to participate **while** its being built.
seeing client devs respond to feedback
and pushing updates and fixes live.
testing in production
NIP-05 verification on your own domain
That you own your identity and can take it to another relay
Lightning integration. And I know it’s gonna get much better.
The whole DID seems interesting
global
