Blockbuster used to put little blurbs like โbe kind, rewindโ on their products. The world was so different back then. Rewind doesnโt mean what it used to anymore, especially for kids today.

Thatโs a throw back and they used to charge if the movie wasnโt rewound
I donโt remember that. How would they know if you didnโt rewind it?
You look at the tape.
I worked part time at Blockbuster and remember checking each tape in and rewinding some and they had a fee of some kind at one point to encourage people to rewind the film.
I wish I could go back
Take this.

Wtf is this supposed to accomplish? ๐
Rewind the tape. Good for movie nights, you can start the next movie while the one you just watched is rewinding. I remember when every house had one of these ๐
Exactly right Fren and those VHS tape rewinders were pretty loud if my memory serves me correctly.
The VHS was pretty loud while rewinding haha
I've never seen that before and I used to record my own shows and movies on black cassettes haha
My brother and I watched Beverly Hills cop on vhs so many times we had to frequently open the tape cassette up and repair the tape to the spool
What a great film and I would do the same thing to keep watching it with my brother.
Banana in the tailpipe scene is one of the funniest scenes in the history of scenes.
I remember in school some kid put an apple in the PE teacher's exhaust pipe of his car. He was fucking pissed. He gave everyone a lecture about safety and how he could have died with his family in the car. He took up the whole hour and no one in the class even knew who did it. Not a single calorie was burned that day๐
This is such a massive victory. I hope he got all the girlfriends.
I wish I knew who it was. What could even go wrong with an apple in an exhaust pipe? I feel like the apple would just pop out eventually haha
Itโs low pressure so it chokes before it can blow the load.
And that means the car powers off?
Ya the engine stalls and shuts off
The engine stalls out and it shuts off
What a pussy. I knew he was full of shit saying all that.
So many public school teachers are full of shit and lie for power. In my school we had one of those PE teachers that was texting with girl students and got run out of town. All PE teachers are sus until proven otherwise.
That's terrible. I can't imagine putting my kid in government schools.
This made me think about the ๐ ๐ ๐ in the tailpipe that Axl Foley put in to stop the Beverly Hills PD from following him and if you watch who he gets those from inside the hotel itโs one of the Wayans brothers.
My little brother wore out The Lion King & Jurassic Park ๐
Good times
This commercial really takes you back and brings out the feels ๐

Definitely. And itโs wild how these commercials hit differently once you have a kid.
I don't have kids but everyone around me does and it really does make you feel that

Those were high tech the combined TV/VHS player in their time!
Iโm so glad I had a kid. Itโs a huge massive pain in the ass but itโs not an experience you can simulate in any meaningful way.
Remember this?
Yes.
Also that's hilarious for a YouTube video. *Content* ๐
And this was the better technique ๐
What a time to be alive
Definitely I remember doing that Fren ๐
Holy shit I was too young to even consider that rewinding these tapes kills your battery ๐คฃ
When you rented a movie and someone didnโt rewind it. Bad form ๐คฃ
I remember when the tape machines with auto rewind when you finished watching came out
#nostalgia
My age is definitely showing because I didn't know auto rewind was a newer feature. All my VHS players would auto rewind at the end of the movie. I guess I had it good for a millennial ๐
We have an age difference but not that much I think. I remember seeing the ads in the RadioShack flyer. It was amazing, you just had to wait a bit after watching the movie and it was ready to bring back to blockbuster
Correct Fren ๐
I don't remember that. I always thought the VHS tape rewinds decently fast. Were they slower at some point before?
I donโt think the speed increased necessarily. But the one we had before didnโt rewind when you finished watching. You had to remember to do it. The newer ones just did it automatically after the watch
That era was truly special. Walking in and picking out videos based on the cover. Maybe rent some n64 games as well. Good times
Right?? I just found out recently that the old video games on the SNES were intentionally designed to be insanely difficult so that people would buy the game instead of just renting it from blockbuster. Video game creators were losing money because people would rent their games and beat it over the weekend. Aladdin and the Lion King had me scarred as a kid.

I had Sega channel. It was so worth it.
Someone explained it to me before but I still don't get what it is lol
Basically a device that connected to the coaxial cable that streamed Sega games right into your Sega game consul.
And you could play these games? I thought it was watching tv shows or something lol
No you could actually play them. It was like Netflix for Sega. Way ahead of its time
The idea just sounds impossible to pull off. So it was like using cable to play video games?
Yes. It was like magic at the time. It worked really well zero latency. It was brilliant
The creativity of humans never ceases to amaze me
This is why people like nostr:npub12rv5lskctqxxs2c8rf2zlzc7xx3qpvzs3w4etgemauy9thegr43sf485vg and nostr:npub1j8y6tcdfw3q3f3h794s6un0gyc5742s0k5h5s2yqj0r70cpklqeqjavrvg make me so excited because theyโre actively solving problems with creative solutions. Notwithstanding all the complete dangle brains on here. Weโre witnessing the future in real time.
I had a classmate who's parents had immigrated from Hong Kong. He had a thing called a Super Wild Card for his SNES that let you play pirated games from floppy disks. Shit was amazing.
Nice. I remember discovering ROMs via torrents in middle school and feeling like an absolute chad playing any game I wanted anytime.
I miss the ZSNES days.
remember xbox 1.0 modchips?
Yes, I had one. I was quite involved in the softmod scene too, making how-to guides and software packs to make it easy for others. I modded ~400 OG Xbox myself, didn't work a real job for a year or two thanks to the money earned ๐
Always learning new fun shit about your Ryan. Neat.
At $200 a pop it kept the bills paid ๐๐
It's also why I initially learned about Linux. Some tools needed it, and you could turn an Xbox into a capable file server for media.
In 2002 my house had a central server to store torrents, and you could watch them on any TV in the house through XBMC on modded Xboxes. I was already living in the future.
I put team xecuter chips in 4 xbox's
i was one of the early users of xbmc kodi, halo 1 via xbconnect, halo 2 was leaked to the scene before it came out
good days
I wish I had nostr as a kid
It was called IRC back then.
What is that?
Internet Relay Chat
Idk what that is either lol
Something with more users than Nostr ๐
mIRC was awesome.
Still is! nostr:nprofile1qqs8eseg5zxak2hal8umuaa7laxgxjyll9uhyxp86c522shn9gj8crspz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgjwaehxw309ahx7um5wgerztnrdakj7qgkwaehxw309a3x2an09ehx7um5wgcjucm0d5hsvlnggv has an IRC server running with Nostr identity login.
That emulator was sick
I remember finding roms too and going back to beat super mario world for the first time haha I was just always paranoid about getting in trouble for it like I was on limewire ๐
That sounds amazing ๐
Omg I had a friend that got a PS1 from his japanese friend with something like that on it too. He had so many games but most were in japanese.
PS1 was the first chipped system I owned personally. Every console I've had since has been moddable, it's a requirement for purchase ๐
Which systems can be chipped today?
I haven't followed it as closely in years. Last I did was my Switch, bought one as soon as a bootloader exploit was announced. There is stuff for the PS4 & 5, but it's such a cat and mouse game now with online functions and updates. I game on PC now, and mostly use the Switch to stream it to my TV ๐
There is cool stuff to totally unlock the PS3 & x360 though.
I gotta jailbreak my switch but im lazy. Wish I could pay you to do it haha
I had an online business in my early teens and sold games and consoles. Had a supplier in Cali that exclusively sold Japanese imports. Somehow scored a relationship with them and was one of the only online sites in North America to publicly sell modded GameCubes through an English-only site. Had a little switch on the back so you could play between NTSC and PAL. Fun times. The GC was such an underrated console at its time imo.
Gamecube is top 2 ninentdo consoles of all time. How were you able to sell those modded systems online? I feel like fbi would be on your ass about it haha
Dunno. Just did lmao. Never got into trouble. Maybe it was some legal loophole by the wholesaler ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Ah, the memoriesโฆ
https://web.archive.org/web/20020205054354/ http://msxboxgames.com/gamecube.html
Nice. Don't fuck with big N now. They'll lawyer up ๐
Hahaha no shit! Did not know that. Yeah could never figure out Lion Kingโฆand now that explains why haha.
Those games were traumatizing lol
The toughest part of Lion King was figuring out you had to throw Scar of the cliff just like the movie to finish the boss fight. That game was awesome though.
