I haven't done a #grownostr post in a while. Let's talk about my love for #golf

I come from a golfing family, mostly on my mother's side. My grandparents played, my uncles and aunts all played, my cousins played, my parents played a little, and I played. My grandfather and my uncles were the ones winning all of the local tournaments, so I had big shoes to fill coming from a golfing family.

My grandfather, the patriarch of our golfing family, got me into golfing at the age of 10. Well, at least he tried. He took me to the range to hit some balls. At the end of the night, as it was getting dark, he said he would go out and hit all of the balls back so that I could hit them one more time before we headed home. He ended up hitting my with a golf ball. It was probably my fault for not paying attention 😆 I didn't play again for 2 years.

Now at age 12, it was time for me to live and breathe golf. I played 18-27 holes a day in the summer. My mother dropped me off at 8:30am on her way to work, I met my cousin and sometimes a friend or two, and we played golf all day until we got picked up at 5pm after our parents got off of work.

When I turned 16 and could drive, I was doing essentially the same thing. I would drive myself to the course and play all day, then hangout with friends in the evening.

I played and won various tournaments as a teenager. My cousin and I were best friends, but always highly competitive with one another on the golf course. We played together and against one another often.

In college, I rarely played golf, focusing my time on other things (not school work).

After college though, I joined my family's league team and was able to find the time to play once a week and a couple league or family tournaments a year. It was truly a wonderful time, being a young adult, playing golf with my cousin, uncles, and grandfather on weekly basis. It was great bonding time all around a sport that we loved. I will always cherish these good times and amazing memories we had together.

Our grandfather invited my cousin and I to The Master's down in Augusta, Georgia one year and wow, that was a hell of an experience. Actually, I think that was Katie and I's one year dating anniversary week. Oops.

Throughout my 20's and 30's I played a couple times a month and maybe one or two tournaments a summer. It was hard to find time to play now that I was married had a family. I don't know how my family did that when they were my age.

I haven't played golf for 3 years. I hurt my back playing in May of 2020. I wanted to heal up and take time off, hopefully to play again. Last summer I had surgery and was unable to play. I could probably play this summer if I tried. Maybe I'll go hit some balls some evening.

I still have the golf clubs that my grandfather custom made for me when I was 18. They are Ping Eye 2 clones called Tour Model 2. They shafts in the mare stiffer and men's stiff flex and the shafts are one inch longer than regular men's length. I could probably use a technology upgrade at some point if I ever decided to play again, but I just can't see myself playing golf with any other club. My grandfather passed away back in 2009. To me, the clubs are part of his legacy.

Even if I don't play now, I have friends that are getting more into the game and look for me often for teaching or lessons. I know a lot about the game and swing mechanics, having my grandfather in my ear most of my life, always teaching. I love to help my friends and talk about golf, even though I don't play right now.

Oh, I almost forgot! I worked at the local country club for several years in my late teens and early twenties. I worked inside the pro-shop and I also worked out on the grounds, mowing greens and tees, as well as doing tons of other manual labor. The pro-shop work was easier, but the greens work was more fun.

Do you play golf?

At least once a week I golf with my son who plays on his high school golf team. He’s also part of the “Youth on Course” program through the juniors PGA. I haven’t had this much fun with him in years! Such good bonding time for years to come! Teeing off tomorrow morning in wine country as well! Thanks for this little piece. #grownostr #golf

that's fantastic. i was on our local high school team too. it wasn't much. our coach was horrible. we just went out and played 9 holes after school 😆 enjoy the time with your son tomorrow!

I actually started playing last year, had my first set of clubs a couple of months after that and I have been playing with friends. We don’t go that often but at least twice a month and I go to the practice close to home also once every two weeks or so… it’s hard but rewarding when you hit the ball properly.

that's awesome! glad to hear that. i used to love just going and practicing chipping and putting or heading to the range and just hitting wedges or 8-irons. don't go and just bang a driver non stop. it's all about the short game.

Yep. So frustrating to get to the green with a good chance of par for example just to do 4 puts after :(

My dad and my maternal grandpa both played golf and tried to get me into it at a young age. I would occasionally play the course at my grandpa's 55+ living community, and every year my dad and I would enter a father/son tournament that my next door neighbor helped to organize. We never did very well, but we always loved the time spent together and the hot dogs we ate at the turn.

In middle school I did a learn to play summer camp program. One of my instructors only had 2 fingers on one hand and was an incredible golfer. This was at my local golf center that had a 9-hole par 3 course that circled the driving range. That place has been closed down for years now and I miss it a lot.

I still have and use a set of clubs my dad got me in high school - one of those sets that isn't "name brand" that was probably bought from a big-box sports store. They still get the job done though!

A few years ago I got back into playing regularly at a short municipal course before I moved, but stopped playing again after the move.

These days, a new friend of mine got me back into golf via chip and putts - something she is vehemently trying to get rebranded to "medium golf", since it is between regular golf and mini golf. I'm not playing the big courses but I'm playing more consistently than ever before, and having some good fun with friends. Maybe one day I can convince them to move up from medium golf and we can play a full course together!

I have never heard of chip and putt places before. Would it be essentially a practice green or a very, very short par 3 course?

Yeah, exactly a very short course! Sometimes it's called pitch and putt as well. 9 to 18 holes, all of which are 20-50 yards. All you need is a wedge and a putter, and a full 18 will take maybe an hour to walk through. It's really refreshing!

My teenage years I played regularly at my local club . One year I won a 36 hole tournament! The cost of playing went up a lot after that and girls/alcohol were more fun! I’ve taken my boys on a pitch n putt 9 holes a few times , and few years ago I started to go for twilight golf when fees are reasonable. Covid interrupted that but I did manage to get some cheap clubs, bags and trolleys. I still have my 30 year old clubs still in good condition, I’ve replaced the woods and bag/trolley but I can still feel the magic when I use them.

I hope to get out again soon 🏌️‍♂️⛳️

I hear you there. Girls and alcohol is why I didn't play during my college years.

🍻💃🪩🕺💜🫂

I still get excited when I make a birdie 💯🐦⛳️

me too! birdies are worth getting excited over! i've had several eagles over the years, mostly on par 5s. though my absolute favorite eagle was when i was 16 or so and rolled my drive on #1 at my club and holed out my second shot from 180 yards away. my cousin was busting my balls for hitting such a bad drive. i showed him 😉

I was on a par 4 but left my drive in the rough to the left. When I reached my ball it was sitting up and I saw only one shot to the hole. Flushed it straight at the green with a 5 iron and watched it bounce and run between two bunkers, up the green funnelled left and stopped 2 foot from the hole! 🐦⛳️😎

My Dad refused to teach me to play golf. My mom at some point decided it would be a fun couple’s activity for them earlier on in their relationship. He took her to a driving range and she kept swinging, looking for where her ball went but it was still on the tee. Long story short the only balls she actually managed to hit that day were my father’s. I don’t think my father has attempted to teach anyone how to play golf since. He is somehow still happily married to my Mom.

That sucks he wouldn't teach you. Golf is fun for everyone.

My grandmother played, my mother and my aunt played. My girl cousin played with her brother and I. She was pretty good. I think one of my sister's played a few times, but she wasn't very interested in playing.

I think I took my wife once to hit balls when we were dating. It didn't go well either.

It’s probably cool. I’ve heard it sucks to play golf as a woman if you’re not smaller busted. My dad did teach me how to play other sports.

I never have.

When I was in high school, our school got putters and these plastic whiffle balls the size of golf balls and decided that boys PE would be golf for about six weeks. A couple of my friends figured out how to knock the whiffle balls up onto the roof of the gym and soon there weren't enough left for us to continue.

ouch. 😟

Great story. Golf has always been a big part of my childhood as well. I used to ride my pedal bike to the golf course and play everyday in summer. I managed to hit a hold-in-one when I was 10, the first time I ever hit the par 3 green over the creek. There was a lot of hope that I was going to be some sort of special golfer. When I got my drivers I switch to motorcycle and stopped progressing. At 38 now, I probably golf worse than I did when I was 10, but I enjoy it just the same. This very morning I had my 9 and 7 year old daughters at the range to start them down a similar path. I hope it sticks!

I used to play golf with my dad, never really enjoyed it though.

Yes! I love golf! ⛳️ I grew up in a golfing family - my maternal grandmother was always playing and coaching up all of her children and grandkids. I used to play more in the summers as a child, but as I got older it was hard to find others to play with (not as many girl golfers) and I kind of stopped playing more than once or twice a year by the time I was in highschool. This summer I’ve already played 4 rounds of golf! (All in the same week). I was fortunate to play in nostr:npub1theparkprcs70dcs437ke9zzwsr6u60f8flu7rg28m30438aep9sd94dha ‘s first bitcoin park golf classic, and it was a blast! Every time I play I wish I played more and want to try and hone my game in to be a little more consistent. Such a fabulous sport! I’ve also been lucky enough to attend the masters and I hope to go back again someday!

Love it! Maybe we'll play together someday 😉

I’m sorry this happened to you

Or

I’m so happy for you!

Either way, I’m not reading all that.

😉

Rude! 😱

Honesty isn’t rude.

Just because the vast majority of people don’t have time for a 60min rant doesn’t mean they’re rude.

It’s the other way around.

Great post!

My best friend got me into the game 2 years ago. Incredibly fun and frustrating game. I always loved playing pool and they have some similarities.

Only a few birdies and pars but mostly +2 3 and 4s. Still learning and enjoying it.

I always like the mark 1 GTI, what a car that was

Will be back after your post . Golf is a very good self awareness lesson and has helped me a lot to focus. I'm still super bad at individual holes but really good with the driver when practicing ☺️ I once saw Nik Faldo live during a holiday in England a long time ago. It was an incredibly exciting tournament.

A friend is trying to teach me now. I haven’t bought my own golf clubs yet. First and last time that I played “golf” was in middle school because it was one of our activity modules. However, I did play a bunch of tennis and racquetball growing up because my dad loved both sports.

Nice post. I go through phases of being obsessed by it and then not playing for ages. Recently had a lesson and it’s got me back into it again 😊
