It's here! The Pixel 9 Pro XL is such a big upgrade from the 6 Pro. I'm a big fan of the new edges and redesigned camera bump—it finally looks and feels like the flagship phone it is.

As expected, the easy data transfer wizard simply did not connect to my GrapheneOS phone. I had to set up the device as new, and now I start the process of manually moving things over.

I'm okay with that; it provides an opportunity to reassess my installed apps and remove the non-essential. Thankfully, the automatic Google Fi eSIM transfer was seamless.

Stunning. ⚡️⚡️⚡️

I believe you can export backups of your graphene profiles and import to new setuo. I could also be wrong

Thank you. Yes, I understand that to be the case, but I've also read that even then, some things don't transfer over. That said, I always use a new phone as an opportunity to reduce accumulated digital clutter, so I would be doing a manual transfer either way.

It's a nice looking phone! I'm kinda interested in the Pixel Fold but man is that thing pricey!! Will stick with my humble Pixel 6a for now

It is. I am also intrigued by it, and this being the 1TB model was not much cheaper, but I don't think I'm ready to run a fold as a daily driver just yet. Maybe I will change my mind when I get to play around with one. Who knows? I've definitely got my eye on it.

Pixel 6a is a great size. Pro is still pocketable, but I feel like I have less range of motion with it in my pocket compared to the "a" size. I find I take it out my pocket more for comfort.

The only phone people like us should own since the Blackphone era!

💯 That takes me back.

I figured you'd remember 😉

I know pixels aren't known for great battery life, but I've been thoroughly impressed by the 9 Pro. Of course I am coming from and iPhone Mini which was horrendous in terms of battery. The Pixel 9 is a great phone and Graphene is awesome. I've Googled it more than I thought I would but still glad to have the extensive privacy options Graphene OS offers

I ran into some SIM transfer issues but I think only because I didn't enable the right settings on the phone prior to activation.

I've actually been really impressed by my 8 pro battery wise. I have it set to an 80% limit, and I still charge once daily. I'm running amber, pokey & citrine in the background for Nostr, plus synching & a VPN. I still get 4+ hours of screentime, and rarely drop below 30% battery before it's time for bed.

So far, I have been impressed with the battery life, even with running my XL display at full resolution. Coming from a 6 Pro, I can't really speak to the difference between the 8 Pro (5,050mAh) and the 9 Pro XL (5,060mAh), but it seems to be consistent with the benchmarks I've seen online. Both battery life and charging speeds are a huge upgrade.

Yeah lots of things can contribute to better life. That being said Full Rez 120Hz for life 😂 I notice 60Hz when I use the 6a now.

What you think in terms of processor speed for normal user and iPhone comparisons

iPhone with the A17 Pro chipset beats the Tensor G4 in terms of raw horsepower, but the Pixel 9 Pro XL has 16 GB of RAM, (I got the 1TB storage model) Pixel OS, and the Tensor G4 is optimized for on-device Gemini AI integration with Gemini nano models built-in. I just set it up, so I'm only now getting a feel for it, but these reviews may be helpful in answering your question.

That looks sleek

I was going to go with the 9 Pro, not sure I want/need the XL. How does it fit in a jean pocket with a case on it?

Still running the 5a here!

The screen protector and case are on their way, so I'm being ginger with the screen now and not putting it in any pockets. But, just like any larger phone than what you're used to, it depends on the size of your hands and what you are comfortable with. I suggest picking one up in your hands and getting a feel for it.

I can tell you that it is basically the same size as my Pixel 6 Pro—just a little heavier, a fraction shorter and wider with a 0.1-inch bigger display—and that I am quite happy with the size when wearing jeans and using a thin case.

nostr:npub1a2uzwplzy8uw79rrna6lr0mgxdmx3nfl0xrhcy7se7m24awk5ujqw032qc do you like the specs of the Pixel 9 Pro XL?

They’re not bad. Depending on your current phone it could be a valuable upgrade. However, between the 8 Pro and the 9 Pro XL the differences are negligible to warrant the price tag. As long as my phone works I’ll keep using it.

Unless the 10 or 11 flagship models decide to really add some upgrades

it's probably for the best, besides spring cleaning on apps, I worry about what the data transfer app might inject into the Graphene install. Am I crazy to think so? You're the expert I follow. Does the attestation feature of graphene address this concern?

Yes, it is my understanding that GrapheneOS's attestation feature would detect such tampering. It verifies the entire OS installation's integrity through hardware-backed security, checking the bootloader, firmware, and OS installation itself. Even if malicious code were injected during data transfer, the system would detect unauthorized modifications because it relies on secure hardware verification rather than just software checks.

This does not apply to third-party apps running on top of the OS, though GrapheneOS does support Play Integrity API and SafetyNet Attestation API for app compatibility.

For third-party app security, you would need to rely on:

- The app's own security measures

- GrapheneOS's sandboxing features

- Regular security updates

- Careful permission management

I would be less concerned with Google injecting anything into GrapheneOS through a standard new device data transfer wizard—unless you're on a significant watchlist and your phone is already compromised, in which case attackers have more subtle methods at their disposal.

I'm more concerned with an unaudited GitHub app. Even with open-source code, few people review it thoroughly, and malware frequently appears in open-source repositories.

Some open-source is outright malware. They know nobody reads the code.

Well that is concerning.

Do you know if GrapheneOS is deterministic atm? If not attestation is nice but there are a lot of holes that could be plugged.

Google Fi with Graphene? You have great faith in your VPN.

Threat Model, anon.

Nice. Ensconced on Pixel 8 Graphene for a couple of years hopefully. SSSH.

Also the macro is decent, not amazing, but decent. I just snapped this. #ant #pixel
