American tipping culture is out of control.

The other night I took my wife and son out to dinner, and our total amount was $64, which wasn’t so bad until our server asked me to scan a QR code on the table to pay the tab.

The amounts were arranged in a manipulative dark UX pattern, ordered from highest to lowest, with 25% set as the default amount, and the lowest preset was 21%. To enter a custom amount, you have to locate the tiny “Custom tip” option, practically hidden at the top right of the screen, the spot the user testing heatmaps absolutely identified as the least likely for your eyes to scan.

Not to be defeated by a tip shaming tab-splitting app I’d never heard of before, I outsmarted the system by pretending I couldn't scan the code and asked to pay with the handheld Toast terminal, where the presets were more normal, starting at 15%.

Go check out Sunday (sundayapp.com) if you want a laugh, or to feel depressed. Their slogan is (I shit you not), “Turn every payment into profit.”

It's gotten quite ridiculous.

I recently noticed that some places are calculating the tip after tax which utterly ridiculous.

fyi: we've always been in europe

That's dumb.

yeah, taxes are dumb 🤣

They are. So is paying tips on them.

also, personnel is not paid from tips in here

Yes, I’m aware that the US custom is to pay poverty wages to restaurant workers and expect charity from the customers.

It is the custom yes.. I think, if you have worked a job like this (as many of us had growing up) that you will always try to tip when the option is available.. to do otherwise is a big fuck you to the service. If it's not a service though, that is a luxury (like having someone cook and serve for you), then it's not necessary.

Apps may be predatory, but .. that doesn't mean the solution is not to tip. Also, I'm old, maybe the culture is changing and food or drinks just fall from the sky like uber delivery magic.

I almost never tip less than 18%, 20% on exceptional service but 25% is a fuck you to the customers because it means someone in the middle is getting a cut. I’d rather leave a cash tip or pay the employee directly in bitcoin if they know what’s good.

for sure!! fuck those apps, tip what you want. anything over 15% is pure butter. cash tip is the best, or someday, sats.

now there is 'no tax on tips' so.. tipping should happen more not less, to take advantage. i think, zaps are tips, and they're nice right? lesss goooo ⚡⚡⚡

I don't judge, just stating the differences.

e.g. we tend to just round up in czech. It's not percentage. let's say 5 beers for 37 czk is 185, so you choose 190 or 200.

Some people probably prefer tips to make more, but I think it's better when they're optional personally.

F tips. Did you see the headline that nyc is making tips mandatory on delivery platforms? Who is in the fooddelivery drivers lobby? These guys are geniuses.

Thanks, Mamdani!

100% ridiculous. Something else that I have noticed lately that drives me nuts is places that ONLY accept card payments and then they charge you 3% for paying with a card. If you can't figure out how to build card fees into your pricing you shouldn't be running a business.

5 cuckbucks minimums on card payments are just as bad tho…

I bet the card processors forbid that in their agreements too.

This is why Square POS bitcoin payments have the potential to crush credit card networks by allowing customers to spend fiat, and the business to receive fiat or bitcoin on their end, but the payment foes across the Lightning network for almost nothing.

Not sure why more square users don’t do it. I literally bought a hat from a guy with bitcoin, just suggested he give bitcoin a try, he flipped a couple toggles on his side and it worked. No onboarding video, nothing.

That's cool

I wish people would stop using square. Square is a horrible company that hates freedom. If they even think you violated their terms of service they will freeze your account and money. I do laser engraving and at part of my business, at one time. involved firearms. Their terms of service forbids the sale of "weapons" at the time. I wasnt selling anything besides engraving services. They eventually released my money but they permanently banned my bank account so I can never open another Square account.

That’s terrible and I can see how it made you hate them. I have a lot of gripes with them for other reasons, but for a full-service bitcoin point of sale that doesn’t require a Ph.D. in liquidity management, they’re kinda the only option.

The usual, turning a problem caused by the few rich into a social cause that needs to be fixed by us

Get in loser

It’s “POPULAR❤️” to tip 25%

I read that as American Tripping culture.. Two many bush doors this year... Maybe

you can still use cash. not for long but atm its still works great. i recommend taking advantage of this while it lasts

I do when I can, but I don’t like to pay $3 to use an ATM when I’m not near my own bank branch.

so dont... when near your bank take out what you might need for a month

This is why I like Japanese no-tip culture

Same with Australia. The price you see listed is the price you pay. And people used to be paid a fair living wage. It’s arguable whether or not that’s still true now as the economy has gone to shit here. Most people are priced out of a decent quality home unless they move to a rural area and even then they’ll be paying way too much.

I’ll tip occasionally here in Australia if someone goes beyond what is normally expected of their job and provides great service but otherwise I pay the price listed. Housing affordability is definitely a problem and tipping isn’t going to fix that.

I'm expecting the meme template from Reservoir Dogs "i don't tip"

Good observation. 👌shall we go back to tipping in bearer assets?

If they will accept it!
