Ok, I just received a notice that my Microsoft subscription renews at the end of the month. I think it's time to move to better options.

I have seen a lot on LibreOffice, are there other programs that I should investigate as well?

Should I use this to motivate myself into converting my computer to Linux as well? 🤔 How feasible is that to do for one not-tech-savvy middle aged woman by herself?

My emails are mostly being shifted to my own custom domain email address through my website provider, so making headway on giving up Google. But will likely keep it for a while more until I can get off the Google phone. Any suggestions for a good replacement? I thought Grapheneos was coming out with their own hardware but idk if it's worth the wait.

Otherwise I am addicted to whining to ChatGPT, and idk if there are better options for that? (Yes I'm aware I should just stop doing this but I ain't got no IRL friends and I need to whine to something or else I'll go crazy)

Any guidance, advice or ideas on how to get this normie deeper into freedom tech would be much appreciated! 🥰

It's not necessarily a "drop in" replacement but I've found the Proton suite of Docs and now Spreadsheets works relatively well... Is that's all you need.

But other than that, G Suite is hard to quit...

Yea Google was the first thing I tried to quit last year and I failed miserably 😅

But hey since then I've quit TikTok and moved to Nostr, and learned soooooooo much so it might be worth trying again.

I don't want to be a slave to the technocrats any longer 🥲

I like only office and yes Linux is great to switch to. With nostr, you’ll get a lot of answers to questions fast to help you transition to Linux.

Ok thank you for the boost! It's one of those things that I just need to summon confidence to dive into, like any learning it'll be hard at first but nothing to it but to do it 😅

Oh thank you, I will check them out!

ppq.ai is also pretty awesome

Thank you I will check them out as well!

Great question. I’m curious to hear what others have to say.

I don't want to give Bill Gates another $100 😡 I just cancelled the subscription and immediately they're like "aww why you quitting? We'll give you two months for free! Don't leave 😢".

Sounds like you should have done it 2 months earlier 😄

I've made a lot of growth in the past 12 months, I don't think I could have succeeded this time last year. It was discouraging enough to realize how hard it was to leave Google! But now... I think I can do this!

Use libreoffice! I'd highly encourage you to orient yourself to the goal of moving as many docs & workflows as you can into plain text so you may ascend to computational wizard 🧙‍♀️

Yessss I'm trying to be a wizard in every sense of the word 🧙‍♀️🥰🧙‍♀️

Speaking of which, would you like and invite to nostr:nprofile1qqsvyv8d6dx2tjp33069j2kq2mx7xage6w2upyzvxl4pcegt3t22wyspz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qg6waehxw309ac8junpd45kgtnxd9shg6npvchxxmmd9uq3samnwvaz7tmnwpshg6tp94shycmpdesjucm0d5hsyvtxr6's spatia-nostra relay? In addition to being a fun experiment, we're working on incorporating different themes like mystical imagery & archetypes :treeoflife:

Oh sure that sounds cool! Do you need me to do anything?

Just some curiosity & patience when things go wrong 🤣

Right now just the main relay is up, but we'll have other ones for feed curation and internal communication/documentation. But aside from adding wss://spatia-arcana as a read/write relay, there's really nothing else to do :)

Dawn made a nice tutorial if you'd like to learn more.

There's lots of things I'm excited about with this... general and focused chat groups, currently scratching topics like ametuer geology, art, world domination, etc. Members can claim a nip-05 address, create premium paywalled content, enjoy a nicely filtered inbox for your replies (that limits hellthreads), recieve secure dms, view your usage statistics, and sync notes across different relays. You're welcome to invite up to 5 other users to join our little pyramid. Soon, you'll be able to schedule posts to it, as well.

I have some ideas for incorporating other focal points for chat groups, and members can start their own, too. In addition to the main & member-curated feeds, there's also a couple discovery feeds in the mix, that are built through member's interactions across the wider network, and, as liminal mentioned, a member-only space, mostly for guidance and education purposes.

Sign in at https://spatia-arcana.com to check out all the stuff... Curiosity & involvement are encouraged but not required. Patience is necessary & questions are welcome. :)

Yes, of course. Only topics that scratch that curiosity itch. Calm and casual, never crazy or too out there 😁

another vote for Maple AI. Please don't let Sam Altman harvest your thoughts 😫

One of my goals this year is to wean myself from Google Docs for all professional data if at all possible so I'm curious to see how Libre (or alternative) goes for you.

Yes I know it's terrible to let Sam Altman harvest my thoughts 😭 I can get a different bot to tell me bedtime stories!

I will let you know how the transfer goes 🥰

Try a Linux Mint live cd

Don’t expect a replacement equivalent to Windows but doing everything is possible

I don't even use the full functionality of Windows it's just what I've always used and so have just continued using it from bias. But it's grown worse and worse on the privacy front and I can't open any program without AI popping up constantly now and it's driving me crazy!

If it’s just browsing the web, emails, working on office docs, listening to music, watching videos, it’s great on Linux.

Now’s a good time to move from Windows as you seen so many have last year.

And when you gain Linux fu skills

You will have more control of the system and use the resources to your liking, not to mention the ability to run the ai models locally

I'm not even sure what that means but I'll circle back to this when I do! 😅

libre office is great. you can run it on Linux MINT and it's a Windows like experience anyway. installation is easy if you have a spare USB stick lying around.

I'd use PPQ.ai to whine at chatGPT. at least then you have a privacy buffer in between you and the model. so you're doing it through the browser rather than a dedicated app.

you can use a graphene phone to replace Google but I pick just one of these things and do it first. either the phone or the laptop.

just take a small step to start with and then when your life seems normally livable again, do the next thing.

Baby steps, baby steps 🥰

nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7ct4w35zumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6qg0waehxw309ahxjup3xuhxxmmdqqsdngef474mycag4usksw8tghslqnxrqqrsg3jfglztjplphm6cp4c7auuy5 and I would recommend looking at LibreOffice for sure. Depending on if you're writing novels or not, we can also recommend Obsidian with Longform (as that's what we use for our novels we wrote separately).

As for Linux, I'd take a look at Mint, Pop_OS!, or probably Fedora. Don't use a WM (window manager, or keyboard-driven environment) at this point.

When it comes to Google, I'd highly recommend taking a look at Proton or Tuta, though Tuta actually censors based upon German law (as they're German). Proton is good, however, they have some corporate baggage.

I'd switch out of ChatGPT to something like Qwen or Grok, considering that GPT is unethical out the wazoo.

Either one of us would be happy to help you out with the rest.

Thank you! Especially for the novel piece, I have a draft novel on Word now which is the biggest concern in terms of transferring. I will check out Obsidian 🥰

You might want to learn how to turn that into an ODT file, since LibreOffice does well with that. What Sokio didn't mention was OnlyOffice, which is also a good option to some. It has full Word compatibility from what I'm aware of.

Ok thank you! I will be exploring a few options 🥰

Swapping over to Linux may be good, but comes with user experience caveats like having to update packages and "coding" in the command prompt.

Libre office is a great alternative to Office.

My biggest reason for not switching is because I play games and they don't run great on Linux, even in 2026.

My last attempt to switch to Linux was in 2020, I had it for one day and discovered during a timed job application test that some of the syntax and coding language for R and Python varies enough that I failed the test. I cried until my man reinstalled Windows for me 😅

But I'm a big girl I can do this myself. Especially with time to process and digest the change.

Love the initiative ! Keep it up!

I'm trying 😅

Linux is easy enough, you can install it side by side to Windows until you feel you can completely make the switch!

I have used Mint and Ubuntu, both very good options for beginners.

Libre Office, Browser, E-Mail are mostly all I need, so no need for Windows at all.

Just play around with it, totally worth it!

I switched from Windows / Office to Linux Mint / Libre a couple of months ago. It's all good. You can use them side by side before you decide to go all in on Linux. Libre is fine for word processing and spreadsheets.

Thank you for sharing! It's time for me to take the plunge 🥰

If using just for general life management Linux mint it great, comes preinstalled with libreoffice and thunderbird (opensourse Mozilla email client that will likely be compatible with your email set up).

I manage all of my personal affairs with libreoffice. Works great.

A piece of advice, install on an older machine, or if buying a new machine don’t buy the latest and greatest. You will likely get hardware compatibility issues. It takes time for Linux drivers to catch up.

If you use Linux mint, install it on hardware that is say 2 years old, and you are reasonably good at using AI to troubleshoot, it should be a relatively easy to change over.

Ah this is interesting advice. Luckily my main computer I'm hoping to update is about five years old anyways.

Before jumping from one powerful word processor to another, you might try something simpler and see if it works for you. I'm a huge fan of Typora, which is a clean, minimalist app that lets me focus on writing and not on aligning bullet points or tab stops. It works on Windows and Linux. It uses markdown for formatting like boldface (easy to learn), and it can export to Word, PDF, HTML, and other formats, as well as importing Word etc.

I agree with people who say using a GrapheneOS phone for a while is a good step toward Linux. You get used to using a lighter, cleaner system on your phone, and you start to want the same experience on your computer.
