I'm a realist, nobody should just go throw away their devices because of some stupid decision by some desk jockey. And I'm not stupid enough to think Google isn't evil (They don't even try to say other wise anymore πŸ˜‚ )

But after this shit, anybody who buys a new Apple device is either just out of touch, or doesn't care about their personal liberties. They hate bitcoin, they hate freedom, and they have made it clear they don't want their users to have choices.

This absolutely should hurt them financially.

I’m committing to a pixel and start my journey. Have avoided for such a long time but I’m done

You going the Graphene route?

I have no idea. Just one step at a time. No plan yet but probably. nostr:npub1jfn4ghffz7uq7urllk6y4rle0yvz26800w4qfmn4dv0sr48rdz9qyzt047 suggested android with f droid to get my head around it first so probably will be my first step

Pixels apparently do really well with Graphene nostr:npub17rlc0emedw5xljztfqrmykjaacsx6ujvdas64zznjadrnhhwlavq4jjtggand nostr:npub1y3uh89v5a4vq92t8q0j6su94zhvcdxpywjn3l6hpsr5welarqtrqj7yzhd were both commenting on it. You may want to look into it before switching, because setting it up first would be ideal, so you don't start from scratch. I think you can buy it preloaded.

But then I won’t understand how it works. I think I need to take the pain and start from ground zero

True that! And I don't think it's nearly as complex as it seems, looks easier than setting up an umbrel.

If use the web installer is not hard at all. Can use a USB bootable Linux distro if prefer not to use Windows.

Installing GrapheneOS on Pixel was extremely smooth/easy (way easier than trying to get a custom rom on Samsung, for example). After installing just watch a couple YouTube videos on best apps and settings to use.

Then... Feel a lot better knowing that you are more secure and not leaking tons of private info.

Currently this is the best/happiest I've been with my phone setup since I had cyanogenmod on the galaxy s8.

*Make sure you don't get an OEM locked pixel! (not verizon)

This guy (probably here somewhere) has a bunch of useful videos:

People are living in the wonderland when the defend greatness in a no freedom of choice system πŸ€™πŸ»πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

I just want a desktop version of Brave that will fit in my pocket and has a 12-hour battery. I'll figure out the rest from there lol

Truth! Though Brave makes me question as well at times with their shitcoinery πŸ˜‚

You can run multiple OS on a Mac.

I can run multiple OS on a non-mac

But not Mac OS

Why would I want to run Mac OS?

Work? Damus? Doesn’t matter. They do have a lot of choices for users, but they just want to make money involving digital transactions. It’s a company.

Think about cars… now they really don’t want you to have a choice, but it’s mostly because of manufacturing costs. Go do a build and price on a car and you’ll see how little choice you have. They are just trying to get as much value as they can.

Apple isn’t stopping us from anything. Only the government does that. The government could snap their fingers and make apple do whatever they want. So what if apple bans an app. This was great for bitcoin.

They banned Damus because you could sell digital content. Oh yeah? Sell it for what? Well it takes money to buy something.

This was a direct acknowledgement by one of the most powerful businesses ever that bitcoin is money. If they want a piece of the transaction, they are going to have to run their own node and have us open channels with them. This would be awesome. Maybe apple would integrate Lightning into their payment technologies.

Blah blah blah, I like apple for reasons, blah blah blah.....

Man I just don't get it. I'm not saying Google is better, but there's zero your MacOS can do I can't do on Linux or Android (even with a build like Graphene) and it usually costs less to get the same hardware. It's fine to like what you're used to, but don't defend shit takes by a shit company because you're committed to their brand. Apple people live in their own world, always have.

It actually astonishes me how Apple folks are willing to continually bleed financially and actually hoping apple takes more money from them.

They do it to themselves; zero sympathy from my end.

Me: buys used android, replaces with degoogled android and only uses free software

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I don’t even own a phone. I have a Mac for programming. I have 15 year old think pad with Linux for personal stuff. I have a Chromebook for testing. I use an old MacAir and raspi for Bitcoin.

These things are tools. You shit on people for buying snap-on instead of Kobalt too? How about we work together to solve the problems. Half of the US is using apple. I’m not going to throw them away because I of their choice of tools. They don’t even know about this space.

Where did I say throw it away?

You just said you hope apple taxes people on their bitcoin transactions, pick a lane.

There is nothing wrong with using what you have, but it sounds like you're here trying to tell me why MacOS is better, but you have nothing to show why except that it's what you use. I can run any distro of Linux I want on superior hardware for less money than any comparable apple product.

If you care to scroll way πŸ‘† and read the original note you replied to, I specifically said that I'm a realist and don't think anybody should throw away devices over a stupid Apple decision. But if you give Apple your money, you just hate money.

Instead of reacting to what it β€œsounds like I’m saying” why not react to what I am saying.

Instead of reacting to what it β€œsounds like I’m saying” why not react to what I am saying.

Where did I say throw it away?

I am talking about the users, not the product.

You just said you hope apple taxes…

Every lightning node is paid for its utilization. If they provide payment through lightning, it will legitimize the bitcoin network in the minds of many normies. I don’t know what would happen, but I think people would start becoming more comfortable with products like BTCPay, and the devices that could interact with the most Bitcoin systems would be rewarded.

like the iPhone has made people more comfortable with digital payment methods, I believe it has helped the adoption of Bitcoin, especially lightning.

Mac OS is a required OS for certain types of work. With the introduction of apple silicon, it will not be so easy to put Mac OS on non apple products.

Part of why apple has done so well, is it created a really great programming language in 2014 and open sourced it. It works with Linux and Windows. It can also be used in developing apps for Android.

Apple is a ruthless competitor. They will take what they can. We need to create solutions, not tell people what to do. It’s not out of touch to buy something that lets you do your work best. What companies can a person buy from and it is ok?

we have the cold card and other wallet devices. Maybe when the cost of using apple or google gets too high, that will create the investment opportunity for open source wallet devices/software to take the stage. We haven’t even created a good alternative for most people yet.

Graphene OS is cool, but how much do you know about Daniel Micay?

The more you learn about the guy developing Graphene OS, the more you might question if you can trust it.

I'm not even going to attempt to address this circular logic word salad. There is literally nothing I need MacOS to do. I didn't say I want apple to tax, you did. Nobody is getting thrown away, I'm not even sure what you're ranting about. You can't point out one guy involved in a large project who stepped away, and say it can't be trusted, then advocate for the massive corporation that has proven they can't be trusted and want to restrict your choices.

I can not even begin to unpack the shitcoin mindset here, and I don't have any interest in debating it further with you, as you can't even maintain one logical stance in this discussion.

Lol, slow down when you are reading. Cmon man, we have chatted in nests together. Stop reading my stuff through the lens of an apple fan or something.

i copy pasted your responses and responded to them. I was showing you the comment, and my response.

a lot of people use Apple specifically because of its reduced functionality in some ways. Because the apps can not be side loaded, it is very difficult to plant malware on an apple device as opposed to other devices.

Apple is the malware, IMHO.

You use the devices you enjoy, bud. That's the beauty of free choice! But there is zero value they bring to the table for me. I'll use the money I save to stack more sats.

For me it was always about personal preference. Last I had an iPhone was like 2012 or something. I always liked their build quality. But they lost some of that later on, I never really cared for the interface. Even if it was easy to use.

Though I don't take pleasure in the told you so stuff. I wish we had more freedom to choose what we liked and not be beholden to the corporate thumb.

But. I'm not surprised we don't πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And I don't mean to sound like that's what I thought you mean.

I do agree this should hurt then financially for people that care about this stuff as we do our best to combat it.

Agreed. And I don't want to go around beat the drum saying "I told you so". That's just ego stroking bullshit.

But damn it, I hope people realize that Apple just wants your money. They are not your friend.

πŸ«‚

Exactly, it doesn't mean that you need to throw your phone right away, but you can start getting ready for when you need a new phone to not fell again into apple/google trap.

I've been an Apple user for 15 years but I'm thinking hard before I buy another Apple product.

I haven't been a fan of them for a long time, personally. Mostly for UI reasons, but their stance on bitcoin and freedom is appalling.

The MacBook Pro is still the best laptop you can buy as far as I can see, but I may have to move on for reasons of principle.

You should be able to sell an iPhone, get a used android, and still be ahead.

And I have flashed graphene os with their web installer. They make it really easy.

You can usually get the same or better specs on an android phone for roughly 2/3 the price.

If they didn't wake up with all of the serious data breaches like ICloud long ago, I don't think they ever will.

Might be controversial, but same goes for Windows users, no excuses not to be using something like Mint/Ubuntu/PopOS + Wine, it's stupidly easy to install things with Lutris and Bottles. System76 and other companies make OEM laptops with Linux already installed.

It's Stockholm Syndrome, they know it's bad and even willfully acknowledge it, but they won't vote with their wallet on new purchases. They continue on with the abusive relationship and defend them even when it defies logic.

They crazy part is I get people telling me all the time they don't use Linux because it's too hard or techy. It's easier than running Windows by a long shot, I usually keep a windows I stall dual booted for those times you may need it. I haven't actually ever needed to use windows in years. And every time I have booted into it, I've wanted to beat a hole in the wall with my laptop by the time I finally got to doing whatever I was doing.

Ubuntu/Debian/Mint are all so easy now, and I know other distros are super user friendly now too. Not to mention free and open source.

So let’s say that I bought my new phone in January & it’s not yet paid for… and I tend to be the kind of person who holds a phone for 5 years or so.

What are my options? I don’t have a desktop or laptop. I am here only for the zaps (thought they were dumb but low & behold I love that shit). Can I log into a website & access through a browser (on my evil Apple device)? Am I outta luck until I upgrade working off just likes & not zapping anyone else even?

Is fountain next?

You can definitely log into a web client like Snort and it will function just fine, though sometimes things get a bit slow. I just switch to Iris or Primal when Snort gets buggy. I believe apple has the nostore extension, that let's you sign in with pasting your keys on webclients. I've heard good things.

And that's a good question I hope they don't go after Fountain, but I can't see why zaps would be paying for digital content (they aren't) and streaming sats on Fountain wouldn't be (they are). Only time will tell.

But if they nuke Fountain from Apple, you can always use Podverse via browser. It's much harder to stop web apps, and all Apple is doing is shooting itself in the foot.

So let’s pretend like I’m an idiot here, this will be harder for you to do than me…

What’s snort?

πŸ˜‚ Nah man, I get it, there so much shit going on here!

Snort is a pretty feature packed webclients for Nostr. The layout will be different, of course, so it takes some getting used to. But, it's solid.

Snort.social

Is it a website? A relay? An app? Where do I go to get snort

It's a website! You just literally go to Snort.social and login with your private key. Even better would be to get nostore which is an apple app or browser extension(not an apple user, so I've heard good things but I am no help on that part) to store your private key so you can sign into any Nostr site without needing to paste your nsec. But I've used it countless times without issue. Works great on both mobile and desktop.
