Holy fuck I just saw something deeply disturbing on the global feed, involving kids.

What the fuck. It may have been real, it may have been AI, it didn't stay on screen long enough to know.

Instablock, of course, but what the fuck.

If that can't be stopped here then this is done as a social network.

How do you even report this sort of thing to the police without subjecting yourself to it?

Feel fucking sick now.

Yeah these things are a problem indeed

Have seen similar. I rarely visit global feed for this reason. Some sick people out there.

That’s horrible, and why I don’t look at global, just my nostr follows web of trust

Making you scared of the global feed gives the cops more reason to spam stuff like this than to track down people who do

can i get a rough description of what you saw. I'd like to know just how cautious I should be perusing NOSTR

It involved kids and it's not something anyone should be subjected to seeing. Or knowing about. Be very careful on global. First time this has happened on my global feed but it's enough that I'm ready to walk away unless something is done.

To be blunt, you should probably walk away now if you expect a flawless global feed

To be blunt, if you want a global feed filled with CSAM there's something wrong with you.

There’s a chasm between those 2. Cute false binary

There's an ethical responsibility on the part of people hosting notes that link to csam to ensure they don't get through. Fuck off with your 'cute false binary' BS.

No. You implied either flawless or filled with CSAM. YOU fuck off with that horseshit.

If you want increased evidence of moderation, you can just say that. From OP, sounded like you expected assurances of perfection. Which will never happen at the global relay level.

Like others said, take some responsibility for your sensitivity and stay off global. Demanding a match to your ethics code for every host globally is entitled and delusional.

If you want children exploited there's something very fucking wrong with you. We either sort this protocol out, or it's fucked.

Now fuck off.

To be fair with the same logic you could ask for censorship in the bitcoin protocol because bad people use it too.

Bad people will undoubtedly use available tech, but if there's no effort to protect standard users of nostr then it's not going to last or grow because the good people will leave. It's not much of a sales pitch, is it? Join nostr, be exposed to CP. No one sane is going to want to join that or stick around. Nostr.build does a lot of work, using available tools, to protect themselves and legitimate users. If relay operators don't adopt some sort of similar techniques they'll not only be failing the community they support, they'll be leaving themselves open to claims of liability. What really concerns me is that I'm only connected to a handful of standard relays that loads of people use. It's not even like it's notes on some random outlier relay that no one else uses.

There's a chasm between a flawless global feed and a global feed that just doesn't have any CSAM in it.

Cute false binary.

I was implying that’s what Matt expected by a “flawless” global feed. He thinks every single relay operator should adhere to an ethics standard.

Nice try.

Nostr relays will NEVER achieve a unanimous ethics standard. Maybe clients could get nearly perfect automated detection and censorship with diligent development.

I'm confused. So is your position that a Nostr global feed that doesn't host CP should be considered a flawless global feed? Does the impossibility of a unanimous ethics standard have anything to do with whether relays will avoid hosting CP? When you claim that a unanimous ethics standard is impossible, are you trying to say that there will always be a relay operator who believes that hosting CP is a-okay?

True. We should respect the privacy of those child molesters and whatever they do should be kept between them and the children they molest.

I just stick with my follows but the reality of the lack of filters is something that has held be back from recommending nostr to my family.

Certainly something that needs to be solved. I have been using Nostur and its web of trust does a good job of not showing me spam or things I don’t want to see.

Clearly the dark side of censorship resistance, there will be awful stuff. Every relay can filter, of course, but it's a substantial burden for the operator

It's a necessary burden, just like the burden on the guys running nostr.build. If relay operators are happy to host links to content like this then I'm out of here.

Someone running a relay that I'm connected to through Amethyst is hosting a note, or notes, which link to this content.

I'd recommend relay operators find some way to mitigate this, or use your skills to help law enforcement track down the offenders. You might not be hosting the content but if you're making it available by sharing links to it then you share the same level of responsibility as people running services like nostr.build to ensure it's kept out.

Yeah, stay away from global and firehose feeds for now. I'm lucky enough to avoided encountering anything, but I've seen similar stories.

💯 needs to be solved to ensure the longevity of the protocol.

Sorry you saw that 😓

Unfortunately for whatever reason the only way to update my personal feed on Amethyst is to switch it to global, let events load then switch back to follows. It's been this way for months now.

Weird, do you have relays configured correctly?

https://vitor.npub.pro/post/relay-setup/

Yeah, as far as I know. This issue goes back before the relays were separated out into the outbox model as well. It's an irritant, but only a minor one, usually.

I hope someone with the technical prowess can solve this or at least minimize the risk of this happening. It's deeply disturbing.

I wonder if an org like nostr:npub10pensatlcfwktnvjjw2dtem38n6rvw8g6fv73h84cuacxn4c28eqyfn34f would be keen on helping with funding too if someone were to propose a solution. For the longevity of the protocol? I don't want nostr to become "the pedo protocol". 😓

Lol, police? Good chance they're the ones posting

Few understand this.

You're blurring the images of those you don't follow, right?

Is that possible on Amethyst? Even, preferably, just flat out not loading images from people you don't follow would help.

I don't think it's selective about amethyst

Shit dude, I'm blurring the images of people I DO follow.

Also, blurring images isn't enough if your Nostr client is still downloading child pornography to your device.

It's a real problem and it doesn't seem like relay operators and nostr clients have a clear solution for it. I avoid scrolling global.

It also happened to me recently. Thanks for sharing. I was disturbed and scared thinking: well shit… my IP is on a list now

I haven't experienced this. It might be because I only use clients that have WoT filters.
