The move from Mac to Linux is done. Haven’t opened the former in ~2 weeks. LFG.

right on!

What hardware you using?

Framework 13” AMD

Very cool. Thoughts on the build quality and overall process of the Framework?

It’s not a Mac, but it’s also not a Mac.

It’s very good.

Nice. Was thinking about an old thinkpad, but this looks cool too.

Refurbished Thinkpad X1 is an excellent choice. Great support for Gen 8.

I'm on the Linux, Mac, Windows train. All needed and used for different applications/reasons

Nice porch!

* Yes, but I run Arch, by the way.

it’s not a criticism.

i use a mac.

Didn’t take it as such. 😀

i am also square af.

This is the way👆

🤌

Did you stick with Arch? I blame you for switching. I love it.

Yeah! Haven't gotten the cosmic environment running yet, but its a great experience.

Nice. Cosmic is still beta?

They say its an incomplete alpha

It's pretty. nostr:npub1hgvtv4zn2l8l3ef34n87r4sf5s00xq3lhgr3mvwt7kn8gjxpjprqc89jnv is going to test run it for us.

Bonus: She knows nothing of Linux whatsoever.

Man this is so tempting... but with that shared memory, macs are still incredibly powerful to run LLMs...

No doubt. I did find that ollama doesn’t yet support my Ryzen GPU. That’s a bummer.

I heard that AMD is working on something similar?

As long as there is nothing else on the market (other than buying multiple super expensive GPUs), I'll continue to be trapped in the Apple jail :/

There are many other AMD GPUs that are supported.

This is the way 🐧

framework looks legit! Might be my next comp!

Congrats! I’ve been using a Linux laptop and my Mac has been off for some time…

Congrats! Next leap is to Qubes.

A bridge too far, sir. I’m good with Arch.

Have you had it break yet? Lol

Hehe NixOS for me, all the way

I was just sitting on my Mac 10 minutes ago thinking I should move to Linux for desktop. I use it daily in a server capacity, and have for years, but maybe I should just full-time it with some desktop variant. I don’t know that I will, but it was a thought. What triggered the thought for me was the news app which I rarely use, but I was realizing that it’s just full of crap and Apple is complicit in this. I guess I’m feeling discouraged at the direction that these large companies are going. I’m getting cranky, I guess. :-)

I hear you. Literally years of being locked out of iCloud one or twice a month, for me. I don’t know when or if I’ll let my iPhone go, but I’m going step by step.

nice work, Shawn! 🫡

Macs have great resale value I’ve always been able to sell a 5-7 yo MacBook Pro for ~25% its purchase price.

Not sure I couldn’t go 100% no Mac as we are an “Apple Family”…

But I might put together a Linux machine so I can dink around with hosting a relay and things of that nature

So were we. Were. 😉

Congrats! Less spyware, more freedom.

Great to hear! It’s not as hard as people think

Great stuff 👍

Use linux as main driver myself but still have Windows and Mac machines.

Plan on moving to linux fully in the future.

Brilliant 😄 - I did the last move on my tablet this week - I'm completely Google-Apple-Microsoft-Free now...

Also, #Damus is no comparison to #Amethyst nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z .

Just like iOS overall is a joke compared to Android. I am not partisan, I use both for many years in parallel for various reasons, it is a fact. If you, iPhone users, allowed yourself a thought that it is not important what shape the buttons are, and tried Android seriously, you would never go back. Unless, of course, you use it only for what gov. wants you to use it for while being dumb: gmail, cnn, whatsapp, apple music. Then you would see no difference except the shapes of the buttons, except, even then, keybords are not even close with gboard or numerous open source ones being absolute winners.

What do you think of the framework laptop? I have a MacBook Pro M1 16" and I plan to change for a framework or similar laptop

It will never be a Mac, but it's a brilliant feat of engineering and product design. Get ready for less perfection, for lack of a better word, and less battery life.

But with that, I feel much better about supporting them than continuing to support Apple. And with Linux, there's always an escape hatch to a variety of other hardware.

Cool screen!

Pretty setup, consider me jealous

Which flavor of Linux? 🙏

Cycled through Fedora and Ubuntu, then landed on Arch. But I’m a big nerd. Fedora is excellent IMO; great balance of modern hardware support and ease of use.

So Fedora mighg support a Samsung Odyssey G9?

I have no idea what that is. 😀

The flipper 😍

Fun!

Really cool, thought about a framework as well and Apple itself is questionable, but MacBooks are just fucking great and whoever says something different is lying or hasn’t used one, I think.

No lies detected. It’s a serious adjustment.

Excellent!

Bravo 👏 been trying to switch and hard to get over the hump. Thanks for the inspiration

How is the battery life compared to the Mac? Did you have an M processor Mac?

Not nearly as good/long. Nobody beats Apple there. So far, it's looking like ~5 hours under typical usage. You definitely sacrifice there.

A 2022 M2 Air.

Ooooh you got a Framework laptop! Nice! That’s my next buy for sure.

Kanagawa theme. 😎

Will you be sharing more about this transition for us Linux newbs?

I hadn't planned on it, but feel free to ask questions. 😃

Nice job! 👍 I moved from Windows to Linux years ago! 😎

Is that your garden?

I switched to Linux years ago. After using Windows for most of my life. Recently I had to do a slideshow and the presenter had the latest version of Windows. I didn't know how to use it like find the settings and stuff. It was very weird. I guess I'm Linux native now, welcome to the club you'll be glad you made the change.
