Microsd card of my rpi node is ded. I'm in shambles. 😭. No valuable data is lost though, everything important was on a proper external drive, just the OS was in the sd card.

The sd is still mountable read-only so I can still manually salvage the configs and setups but it's a PITA

I feel for ya. I hate when that happens.

That is a PITA. Did you have any open lightning channels? I’ve been anticipating problems with mine and so I just invested in a second node running on a mini-PC with faster processor, more memory, and more storage. Total cost was <$250.

I have but not that much funds and I can get a node running in less than 2 weeks so I'm not worried.

Any particular pc you would recommend? Used thinkpad x-series?

There are several that are cheap and good. I bought a refurb Lenovo Thinkcentre and upgraded to a 2TB SSD

Another option is a used steam deck from GameStop. Like 250$ and it comes with a screen and speakers.

Bummer.

Have you looked into booting off of an ssd?

Is that possible on a rpi4? I thought only the newly lauched 5 could do that

It supports USB boot. My pi4 is running off a USB drive. It's a lot quicker

Are USB flashdrives more reliable than sd cards?

Some yes but I recommend you buy a m2 ssd and a m2 USB enclosure. That way you know the quality. There are some prepackaged ssds you can buy in USB cases too. I'll post a pic of mine in a second

Concur.

Here is three different SSDs my raspberry PIs boot off of. Two nvme enclosures and a regular sata ssd to USB 3 connector.

The smallest nvme enclosure is the neatest but runs hot. I recommend the silver enclosure.

I've been through a bunch of SDcards. I'm playing with a RPI5 right now. I Can't wait for a proper nvme had to come out.

you can boot RPis from USB flash drives which are a bit more durable than MicroSD. An RPi 5 can also boot from NVMe, the best. An RPi 4 CM can even boot from NVMe or internal flash (eMMC).

I've had this happen. I sucks but ultimately it was no biggie. Good luck!

Just want to add that if using m.2 form, it's recommended to use older m.2 SATA with RPi 4 because it generally requires less power than NVMe. Also the SSD enclosures themselves vary in the amount of power they consume. Personally, I had intermittent power issues with that silver enclosure in the middle and an NVMe, but it worked when switching to an m.2 SATA.

The USB hub hub barely has enough current to power even just the SATA, so you risk data corruption or power-down due to voltage drop during intense I/O. The increased power available in the RPi 5 hub mostly solves this issue, so using m.2 NVMe seems to be ok (so far).

There are a few expensive PCIe HATs available for RPi 5 now. More coming soon.

Next time get two sdcards. Set up the OS in one and once you are happy with your setup, clone the card using dd.

I'm never happy with my setup 😂😂😂

🤣

Sorry to hear, I hope you’ll be up and running soon again.

microsd deteriorated and now seemingly unrecoverable.

Fuck this shit, I'm done with raspis and sd cards 😭 I definitely played with the fire for too long

Core Lightning with the quick and dirty sqlite replication on a USB stick is minimal effort for the new node, which as you stated, should not be a raspi
