Urban Homesteader, Edible Landscaper Here for the Great Awakening

Not a big fan of zoos but took the family to the Bronx Zoo to spend time with some of my wife’s family today.

They actually have good spaces for the animals to feel somewhat normal but it’s a bummer to see once-wild beings in captivity.

The kids definitely loved seeing all of the different species up close though. The monorail to see a bunch of different areas was great (3rd photo of elephant).

Also the Rockefellers always seem to leave their fingerprints on things in NYC including this creepy fountain (2nd pic).

Well they are technically open 24/7 so people can come check it out anytime.

It’s amazing how beautiful and productive the valley still is after it was so over-farmed during the civil war. I think I remember reading they lost multiple feet of top soil in that 5 year period

Finally made it to Polyface Farm in the Shenandoah Valley, VA to check out their setup.

Oldest son checking out the eggmobile.

They let us peep at the chicken processing.

Youngin picking out a good book in their shop..

We love the Smoky Mountains and go any chance we get. Can’t do the long hikes and backpacking trips like the olden days with young kids but still enjoy nevertheless.

First few photos are along Big Creek.

We’ve been scouting land in Eastern Tennessee for over 10 years now, and continue to do so. 3rd and 4th photos are random spots we liked with southern exposures.

I think we’d need to bring a substantial pile of money to the table beforehand because homesteading and depending on local economies probably isn’t sustainable in the more secluded spots. Hopefully we can get creative and make something happen!

Anyone on here in Eastern Tennessee close to the smokies?

Being a tourist in the town where you’re born and raised. Gives you a new lens when you have kids and haven’t been to a lot of the newer sights.

1. Youngest son having his mind blown by a whale shark at the aquarium

2. Day game for the Braves/White Sox

3. The creek that I used to explore with my older brothers. We’d throw on rubber boots, pack BB guns, knives, etc thinking we were commandos- we’d disappear for entire days

Mainly if you want to connect with other homesteaders/preppers all over the world then use Nostr.

Lots of projects, hacks, good ideas are constantly shared with like minded people. Zaps are the cherry on top for VfV exchange.

Also no algorithm is a breath of fresh air. Do the work upfront to follow people who are doing/sharing interesting things (and hopefully not posting 20x/day- clogging your feed lol). Mute or unfollow anyone that doesn’t provide value.

So simple

Definitely learned a lot.

For most projects I can lean on YouTube university heavily but this one was tricky cause nobody had posted certain specifics. Even the forums weren’t totally helpful

Finally got these old rusty rotors off after about a gallon of penetrating oil and some mini sledge coercing.

Got a quote for over $3k to do the brakes and struts as a motivator, and did it for 1/5th of that myself

I always wanted to build out a short bus but opted for a T1N sprinter instead. The process is exciting, maddening at times, but ultimately rewarding once you’re on the road with the family

Props to Mercola for screaming this from rooftops for years now. More and more people are becoming aware.

“Healthier” places like Whole Foods are still canola factories somehow though
