Joel is the real deal. I’ve been to his farm and walked around, which he used to let visitors do (within reason). Learned a ton from Polyface farm. Lessons there drive me into the permaculture rabbit hole including Sepp Holzer. Amazing stuff how they regenerate unproductive land. Would love to steward some land again (when I grow up) 😂
Ok thanks, my little expenses don’t add up to much yet, but I’ll keep at it. To your point of getting people to spend sats, I would suggest we all go out of our way to only spend money with bitcoin friendly businesses. Is that happening yet? Not sure but I’ll keep working at it, to create my own niche market.
In the US it could it be we’re not as hungry for using Bitcoin because our financial pain hasn’t gone parabolic yet. To me that’s when Bitcoin goes to the 🌙
Some of my learned lessons of my voluntary #growNostr job at the Nostr booth at nostr:npub13e6qu4kdjsyysrfl5an558rawvqg0rx2xuat9ca706spcdqjzhuqq6md43.
- Don't count too much on the organisation taking care of nice place with a booth. After the BTC Prague conference their idea was to setup a similar booth. As the Amsterdam conference was getting closer, this setup was already downgraded in certains ways. At the end we just had to deal with a table in the corner of the expo hall besides other companies. This doesn't make sense. There is a community area as well at the Bitcoin Amsterdam conference and to me it's still a big question mark why a grassroots project isn't placed there. So for next year it would be a very nice to have to bring our own booth to the conference.
- So many people who don't know Nostr assume you're a company (because we were standing in the area with all the other companies).
- Some people assumed Nostr is an NFT.
- Some people assumed Nostr uses some blockchain technology.
- The concept of there is no single point of truth or a consensus mechanism is sometimes quite hard to understand for some.
- Search often doesn't work in clients we used to explain / onboard people. I guess many clients are running a background process indexing content. That content is not avaible immediately when you just downloaded a client.
- Using a NFC card with your npub is really use to share it with someone else and start following (thx nostr:npub1fldgkyxjm92mr7zlrejmhd3ymlzx2awhpxpwserzl5v2w7a7a93q0n7wu7 and nostr:npub1t6jxfqz9hv0lygn9thwndekuahwyxkgvycyscjrtauuw73gd5k7sqvksrw showing this). There is a huge market opportunity here selling Nostr NFC powered merchandise.
- At average it takes around 10-20 minutes to talk with just someone explaining all different Nostr stuff.
- Many people already understand why we need Nostr and their questions were in general about how to do certain stuff as they already have a Nostr keypair.
- Explaining my own story why I use Nostr seems to resonate. In this story / pitch I explain why Nostr is healthy and serving my digital wellbeing in a positive way.
- Helping at the booth is one of the best ways to meet new people.
- The livestream just worked, the wifi connection was really good! Thumbs up for that to the organisation!
- When explaining Nostr, you often just see the click in someones mind when they just see how different the protocol works compared to other (legacy) platforms we're using.
- People like stickers, almost our whole stack is gone now.
- People really like nostr:npub1gwa27rpgum8mr9d30msg8cv7kwj2lhav2nvmdwh3wqnsa5vnudxqlta2sz his art and style.
- We need informational flyers which people can take with them to home.
- We need rollup banners. Especially when you just have a table availble you can use as a 'booth'.
- We need more (free) Nostr merchandise.
- When people see a free power outlet, they will ask you if they can use it to charge their phone.
- I need to take notes of people's names who I helped onboarding so I can tag them later on. Tagging me was often a challenge for them (it's the same issue with search) when they took the effort to write an #introduction note.
- Nostr needs to attent to a non-Bitcoin event / conference to gather feedback from other type of audiences.

So I look on different maps to see who accepts bitcoin in my area… 🥴 and I want to change that. My first observation across my country is that there are pockets of accepting businesses. But it’s thin.
I hear much discussion about people feeling isolated in talking about it and fewer conversations about adoption stories. I must be missing out on those conversations. Taking it to another level, I’m not 20 or 30 or even 40. I’m 60 and I have marketed a startup home services business before. I’m used to talking to people about important things, under difficult conditions (fire, EMS, water damage business). Surely my skills can be out to great use in this scenario. Bitcoin does better when people are adopting it and I don’t have time to waste. This strategy needs implementing, by me, right here where I live. Help me help you. Please. One of the true tests of proof of work is #fostering and #adoption. The sacrificial love that it takes to lay down your life for another, even if only for a season; it’s truly sanctifying. So pretty much OPEN PROTOCOL for everything. Question: should we see OPEN PROTOCOL for EMS, FIRE responses? Remember back when fire responses began in cities with horse and carriage with water tanks and hand pumped hoses... (firemen then were BADASS) and if you were a paid member of your local FD response area they responded to your fire. If you weren't a paid member, well your structure burned. That's seriously how it went, and the first insurance company started that way.
Now look at the rent seeking insurance behemoth industry that lies, frauds and cheats homeowners out of legit claims (ex. Florida). Let's figure out something better. Retired first responders have a lot left to give: ideas, planning, experience. How can we help you all in the next generation build this? Love to watch except we need all hands on deck for this. AC thanks for this. Absolutely agree we can’t let this go away. Hundreds if not thousands still affected and hurting. I had not been aware of BV but as a retired first responder with Cat experience (public and private industry) I have been looking to travel there and serve. Being aligned with like minded brothers and sisters would be life enhancing. Currently wife in the hospital so have to take care of the home front. Will pray and donate.
Substack’s getting more traction and moving beyond text and newsletters.

What’s most interesting is why people are moving to or sticking with substack. It’s traffic generation. They’re taking a 10% cut of revenue but they are able to use the platform and network to drive 50% of new subscribers and 30% of new paid subscribers to each substack creator. Sure, creators also need to build traffic, but the power is in the network which grows an audience.
If we are going to see Nostr as a protocol for creators who run a business, we need to make it easier for them to build an audience. That can be algorithims, but it could also be making it easier to recommend good content, share lists, etc…
The other issue we face with creators is that subscriptions are much more valuable to a creator than one off payments. With NWC and wallets we CAN do subscriptions, but we haven’t made it easy and nostr connected the way zaps are.
Appreciate the part about being able to grow an audience. Been trying to do that by commenting on other posts and staying interactive. Suggestions?
