One of the rules in self custody is to not put your coins in an environment that exceeds your own technical skills. If your friend did that then your friend would just lose their coins, and it would be your fault.
If all he cares about is NGU and custody exchanges then it will be your fault if he loses money and his fault if he makes money.

I can only guess that phoenix filled up your abacus before opening a channel, so the utxo size is the remaining after filling up your preexisting channel.
$8.41 to open a channel. That doesn't sound unreasonable this day and age. I've seen worse.
