Hey #plebchain and frens, I need a spot of Bitcoin advice šŸ™

A coworker of mine has told me she wants to make a not-small allocation of her savings to Bitcoin. These will be her first sats, and she has asked for my advice and guidance to get started.

I can help walk her through all the technicals, along with choices around acquisition, storage, custody, privacy, etc.

Since she isn’t just ā€œdabblingā€, I feel a greater sense of responsibility to guide her well, and provide the right resources.

I’m looking for recommendations for:

• Articles/podcasts to help a beginner understand Bitcoin. Written form would be ideal here.

• General tutorials - more like ā€œhere’s an overview of how private keys and nodes workā€, rather than specific tutorials in using particular applications or wallets.

• introduction to Bitcoin theory, to provide context, but a ā€œmellowā€ exposure and not the more intense revolutionary stuff

• any other words of wisdom, experiences you’ve had, or things to avoid.

This is a first for me and I’d love to do it work.

Thanks in advance šŸ’œšŸ™āš”ļøšŸ”„

Do it right* not ā€œworkā€ lolwut

Beyond all the technical advice, I think one of the more important things people can do for education is understanding why Bitcoin is so important. So maybe giving them a copy of broken money to help them understand how broken our current system is would be helpful?

That’s great advice. It was also the first book I thought of for this person specifically. Thanks!

For tech stuff I normaly say Mastering Bitcoin but it gets super nerdy really quick. So im not sure what the best route for beginners is. šŸ¤”

Grokking Bitcoin by Kalle Rosenbaum

Is little less nerdy, but explains the technicals of the protocol very well.

I know it may sound cliche but "the bitcoin standard" is the best single intro to bitcoin I've seen. First 7 chapters don't even mention bitcoin, just the history and definition of money. Knowing money has different attributes is a prerequisite to selecting your preferred money.

I had a conversation with a finance manager the other day who studied economics and he had no idea what money was or even how gold was monetized.

Not a cliche, I appreciate the rec!

My only issue with The Bitcoin Standard is that the author tends to write with a lot of vitriol (also prevalent on his social media account). For a newbie, I find it can be off-putting (except for when it’s the perfect match, lol), and I don’t want to take away from the actual message.

That said, I’m going to give her a list of ā€œrequired readingā€ books, and it’s true that a lot of people have been fully orange-pulled by this book, so I’ll definitely keep it in mind šŸ™

I love broken money but I it's heavy for a lot of people, can't get most to stick with it and read it. Maybe 21 lessons by Gigi would be 2nd.

Looks like a good read for beginners. I've skimmed the pdf and it's very digestible.

If she's got FUD on the brain, this is a good place to alleviate it:

https://safehodl.github.io/failure/

Oh yeah, and Gradually Then Suddenly is a great series of articles too.

Lex's interviews with bitcoiners are good listens too. Here's one with Breedlove:

That was my issue with that book (and why I didn’t finish it).

I’d ask her some questions and find out what’s important to her.

She’s already interested enough to get help with a significant purchase … then there’s the self-custody and the hodl. After that ….

How much more does she want to learn? About what topics?

I don’t have great info but following for responses. Bitcoin standard was it for me but it’s not quick and easy.

anything nostr:npub1s33sw6y2p8kpz2t8avz5feu2n6yvfr6swykrnm2frletd7spnt5qew252p says is always a nice resource for people looking to learn…

šŸ„‚šŸø my good sir! This is a new resource for me — thank you!!

This!

Honestly if you can her the book Principles of Economics and the Bitcoin Standard they both go hand in hand simply in the fact Austrian economics and Bitcoin Theory go hand in hand together, that it almost becomes unbelievably easy to see when you get to understand the two.

As for general concepts even though it may sound redundant, the bitcoin white paper is still her best bet to understand nodes and what a private key is, any futher explanation you can probably help her or refer her to certain videos

You know I haven’t read principles of economics yet. How’s the ā€œtoneā€ compared to Bitcoin standard — similarly intense or is it more academic in style? Great call on the whitepaper, I just downloaded a copy for her

Very similar it’s written without a lot of jargon and no Economic formulas. Take this way, I’m studied economics and this book is the one the few that wont leave you with more questions

She might want to check out ā€œCheck your financial privilegeā€, just so she realizes Bitcoin is global and is helping people around the world.

I found ā€œLayered Moneyā€ very useful to understand where Bitcoin fits in the financial system.

As for tutorials, I would find whatever she’s interested in specifically on nostr:npub1rxysxnjkhrmqd3ey73dp9n5y5yvyzcs64acc9g0k2epcpwwyya4spvhnp8 extensive library. He’s unbeatable.

Andreas Anantopoulos is still around but only through Patreon. He does regular AMA sessions.

Both outstanding books. I actually just recommended Gladstein’s books to another colleague yesterday šŸ˜…

Her family’s international so definitely there’s opportunity for ā€œah haā€ moments around remittances and global instant settlement

And Mr Sessions will be our guide when she’s ready for wallet setup without a doubt. Thanks Paulo!

The humanitarian case is really powerful. That completely solidified my conviction.

Mine as well. It’s typically the first ā€œfeatureā€ I lead with, to try and avoid starting around NGU

If she wants to get familiar with the idea of public vs. private key, invite her to Nostr and show her the difference here. Explaining that if someone gets her private nostr key they would be able to post AS her anywhere in the Nostr network is a great metaphor for keeping the private keys for Bitcoin secure for the same reason.

Believe it or not, https://www.bitcoin.com/get-started/ has great beginner information. This link goes direct to the Education page, so it bypasses a bunch of their marketing.

That’s a great point. I typically save nostr for later (or different contexts) but the point around key education is a really good one. Thank you šŸ™

Great rec’s! I’ll save Ben for when she’s setting up her first wallets. Something like the BlueWallet tutorial just to really grasp how a seed phrase works might be perfect.

21 Lessons is going to be on her required reading list no doubt šŸ¤™

The price moves. That is normal. Stay calm.

Your coins shouldn't. Learn how to move them to a single sig hardware wallet from nostr:npub1rxysxnjkhrmqd3ey73dp9n5y5yvyzcs64acc9g0k2epcpwwyya4spvhnp8 youtube page.

Now you're hodling. But why go through all this mental anguish of hodling? What's the point of all this pain?

Well, learning about Bitcoin and the problems it solves and how it works makes that pain go away. Other people have already cited some great resources for that.

Survive 4 years and you'll be a lifelong hodler. Congratulations on reaching OG status.

I’m literally going to print this out and give it to her on a postcard or something like that šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

One of the rules in self custody is to not put your coins in an environment that exceeds your own technical skills. If your friend did that then your friend would just lose their coins, and it would be your fault.

This is exactly what I was thinking. If that means starting custodial while she learns about wallets, okay (for a time). I had someone close to me say ā€œBuy a ledger. Use itā€. I was lucky to learn self-custody early. My coworker is also tech savvy enough to handle a HWW. But I want her to understand the vulnerability that comes with personal responsibility. Thanks for the feedback šŸ¤™

nostr:npub1h8nk2346qezka5cpm8jjh3yl5j88pf4ly2ptu7s6uu55wcfqy0wq36rpev did 8 #basic episodes on #bitcoinaudible last year which I think are a great introduction to key aspects of the protocol and how to best interact with it. Might be worth checking out.

This is a fantastic place to start. Thank you!!

If she's a online course type gal then Saylor.org has good btc courses for free:)

Ooh hadn’t thought of that. Thanks!
