The problem with that sort of pre-fight tit-for-tat is that many times it's never really clear who did what first. Even when you've got witnesses, there's a different story from everyone, and it just isn't clear who the true instigator is. I think the best you can do is treat it as a regular interaction. People who were clearly defending themselves get a pass, but if it's one guy who starts it, but the other guy retaliates, they both get their wrists slapped. I think it's the only fair way to handle it.
Yeah, I just think family is too important to gamble with, on both sides of the duel. It should be something where these people can fight and brawl and the conflict is over and everyone can get together for a BBQ and be friends. Maybe that's a sentimental idea, but I just think about a young kid learning his father was killed in one of these duel, and the tragedy and horror that must feel like for a boy who did nothing wrong, and doesn't understand what it's all about.
I don't know if dueling with pistols should be legal, but I think it should be legal for two adults who want to settle their dispute with physical combat to do so without the worry of criminal consequences, or civil suits following the duel. There should be some space for that to happen. The reason I'm not so sure about weapons is because of the real risk of someone dying. Because that doesn't just effect the combatants. It effects the wives and children, and potentially sets the stage for retaliatory action by surviving family members. I don't think you should be able to subject your family to that.
Top Gun is worse that Spaceballs. There are some heavier sexual themes involving Cruise and McGillis. I would have probably rated that PG-13.
Ya, I saw that. I guess they don't consider that one brief use in a non-sexual context to be worthy of inclusion. Still, you'd think for accuracy they'd include it?
Apparently, there are a few.
I suppose it's fair to say Gremlins also had an impact given that it can out around the same time and was also produced by Spielberg. But it was Temple of Doom that really drove the issue, and was the catalyst for the additional rating.
Spaceballs came out later, and while it had some strong language, which was the norm for 80s comedies, and what we can call stylized violence, it didn't contain the sort of realistic violence that was the driver of the PG-13 rating. So, while I would understand if they slapped a PG-13 rating on it, PG also fits with the culture at the time it was released.
Nope. It was Temple of Doom.
A .380 and a 9mm are virtually the same size. A .380 loaded with appropriate hollow-point rounds has plenty of stopping power in a confined space, like your living room.
Did you know?
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is the reason why we have the PG-13 rating. After Temple of Doom was released, the MPAA was concerned about how dark the movie was with its themes of child slavery and death.
At the time, there was only PG and R. So, they came up with a new rating for movies that didn't meet the criteria for R, but were more intense and had more serious themes than PG. The result was the PG-13 rating we have today.
As long as the music doesn't invade my home, it doesn't bother me. I don't care if that shit is blaring as I walk to my mailbox, especially on the weekends when I know people are unwinding and just trying to have some fun. And I've been around that music so much that it doesn't bother me. I always laugh to myself as I listen to that bass line that's exactly the same in every song. And I love it when the singer does that high pitched yell. It just makes me laugh. I believe you have to make peace with your neighbors and allow them the space to do what they do. Everyone gets along that way.
For someone with a small hand, the Walther PPK (or PPK/S) is a good choice. It's a small automatic (made famous by Bond) chambered for a .380 cal round. Perfect for the bedside table, and home defense.
For a larger hand (most men) I really like Sig Sauer P226. It's really expensive, but highly reliable which is what you want in a home defense situation.
A sawed-off shotgun (Remington 870) loaded with 12-guage birdshot is also an excellent home defense weapon as you just need to point it in the general direction of your target. And the birdshot will prevent a lot of damage to your home, and prevent errant shots from impacting your neighbors.
I grew up in NY and the head of the Columbo family lived in my neighborhood. There were a bunch of mob guys around my neighborhood. Every night, they'd walk around the block talking quietly among themselves, wearing those ridiculous track suits. They loved those track suits.
A very similar thing happened when I was in middle school. There was this who was there one and just gone the next. We learned his dad ran a garbage hauling business and the feds got him. The whole family disappeared literally overnight.
See, the hardest thing for me was leaving the life. I still love the life...We ran everything. We paid off cops. We paid off lawyers. We paid off judges. Everybody had their hands out. Everything was for the taking.
And now it’s all over. And that’s the hardest part. Today, everything is different. There’s no action. I have to wait around like everyone else. Can’t even get decent food. Right after I got here I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I’m an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook. https://video.nostr.build/9ed618d8b80ebe464696456d8b5cf9fb01d7a7b2d0d1228649c24e30b1f49778.mp4
I think I'm afraid of where it's all headed. These AIs are consuming vast quantities of data from all corners of the internet, and including data we may not want included in the borg. I'm also concerned about who's controlling these things, and their agenda is. I think there's a million ways it could go very wrong, and only few ways it could go right.
I love NWC. It allows me to connect my Lightning node to my nostr client, and connect Alby Go to my Lightning node. It's a simple open standard that facilitates the communication between wallets and various other applications without any learning curve. That makes it an accessible standard that anyone can setup and use in just a few seconds.
I thought I'd be all over this growing AI craze, but something about it makes me feel very uneasy. I find myself not wanting to engage with these various programs, which is a little strange for me because since I was a kid I've been on the bleeding edge of technology, specifically related to computers. And I can't put my finger on exactly what's causing this distress, but I feel compelled to abide by it, and avoid interacting with it as much as possible.

I suggest following people with different views on different topics. The experience is much better when you have a varied feed including ideas you may not agree with. You don't want an echo chamber. Start with notes you like. Follow that person. Then, look at the comments and follow people who make thoughtful remarks. Just keep doing that and you'll build up a solid feed. If you come across people you definitively don't like, people who troll, or engage in speech you find personally objectionable, you can mute them so they don't appear in your feed. It's a process, but if you stick with these guidelines, you'll be on your way to creating a great experience for yourself. Finally, don't be afraid to jump in and contribute with your own comments. Let people get to know you, and you'll end up with a great followers list over time.
As long as you zap dog photos, you're good. Cats get enough attention.
I hate this video, but I can't stop watching it. What sort of voodoo enchantment is this?? https://video.nostr.build/3cfd281b81bb4d1233db3c0635606b538fc7e9b3163f502ebdcc3c55c508d70d.mp4
So, would you recommend not consolidating utxo's? Or is there a point when doing so is the best course of action? I generally consolidate about every 6mo just to keep things tidy. I've never really considered the privacy implications of doing so.
