Effect change anonymously. Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step towards obtaining it. -Thoreau, on Civil Disobedience Experienced policy advisor who promotes open and transparent government and free-market regulatory frameworks.

This is only true if one side asymetrically stops voting, giving the other side a decisive victory over the other.

How to improve the system is a difficult question; is it done by participating (and hoping the person elected makes a change) or is it done by "voting out" and building a better alternative?

Tangent, but You may find this interesting:

Some YouTube commenter said this on my recent TFTC appearance :

He is suggesting that voters are responsible for government actions by participating in voting. That by voting you are an enabler. That is illogical. If no one voted (except the politicians voting for themselves), we would arguably have a much worse government, as only the most power hungry, corrupt people would run, vote themselves in & make laws that benefit themselves to the detriment of the rest of society. I hear anarchists use the same flawed argument.

I find it a shame he didn't chose to post the comment on Nostr, as I'd love to discuss this point. I find it interesting that a voter chooses to participate and yet wishes not to be held responsible for the actions of the elected government. People really do consider themselves separate from the government, when in truth the government has power because it is given by its people.

What does Nostr think?

I'd be very interested in hearing successes, and failures of Nostr users sending #FOI

What you sent one? What happened?

If not, why aren't you willing to send one?

My first debut in the world of bitcoin podcasting. Thank you TFTC for spreading the good word and creating a platform where we can speak up.

There's a need for action, no matter how insignificant. Just being on Nostr today is action, so pat yourself on the back

URGENT: PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY COMMUNICATION RIGHT NOW!

on 4th Sept 2024 #ChatControl regulation representatives of EU goverments will resume work based on a secret document according to Patrick #Breyer, former Member of the European Parliament.

Help to mobilize everybody to defend our #privacy of communication and its developers, investors!

If no preventive actions from your side now, this regulation will be endorsed on 12/13 December 2024.

According to the draft regulation dated 28 May (Council document 9093/24), ChatControl deploys to do, for instance:

🔻 “upload moderation”, users of apps and services with chat functions are to be asked whether they accept the indiscriminate and error-prone scanning and possibly reporting of their privately shared images, photos and videos.

🔻Scan by “artificial intelligence” technology previously unknown images and videos;

🔻If a user refuses the scanning, they would be blocked from sending or receiving images, photos, videos and links (Article 10).

🔻End-to-end encrypted services such as Whatsapp or Signal would have to implement the automated searches “prior to transmission” of a message (so-called client-side scanning, Article 10a).

During the last discussion on 24 May, the Council Legal Service made it clear that indiscriminate chat control scanning of non-suspects is still envisioned and remains a violation of fundamental rights.

Nevertheless, most EU governments are determined to go ahead. https://netzpolitik.org/wp-upload/2024/05/2024-05-28_Council_Presidency_LEWP_CSAR_Compromise-texts_9093.pdf

🌎 Tell your goverment and parliamentarians, that the proposal should be rejected altogether!

🔴Is your government in favour?

→ Ask for an explanation and for your government to revert its course.

🟡Is your government abstaining?

→ Ask why and demand that they take a strong stance against chat control.

🟢Is your government opposing?

→ Great, but take a closer look at the reasoning: Some governments like #Germany e.g. only object to the scanning of encrypted communications, but are fine with the indiscriminate scanning of other private and public communication, with the end of anonymous communication by requiring age verification, or with introducing a minimum age for “risky” communication apps. Also critical governments need to do more, exert their influence in the Council of the EU and agree on a joint list of necessary fundamental changes to the proposal. Absent such revision they should ask the European Commission to withdraw the chat control proposal as it stands.

🔴 In favour of ChatControl: France, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden.

🟡Abstained: Estonia, Netherlands, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Austria

🟢 Opposed the proposal: Germany, Poland

When reaching out to your government, the ministries of the interior (in the lead) of justice and of digitisation/telecommunications/economy are your best bet. More important than that picture of someone pouring a coffee you were going to click like on.

Rule of Law works in practice, but with a large delay and only if bad actions are properly challenged by someone who has the means to see it through. A flaw in the current system for sure

I was not aware of either of those projects. Thank you.

The way to dev is to dev without a governable structure (no company, foundation, not for profit, etc) and anonymously.

Strange to think simple messenger apps may be targets for gov intervention .

Ultimately any app that offers privacy and anonymity with doxxed devs is at risk of gov pressure.

Using simplex now, best there is that I can see

SimpleX okay? I can pm link

To all fellow Adopting Bitcoin 2024 speakers on nostr; any interest in setting up a pre-conference group chat?

Step 1. Jurisdiction passes law restricting encrypted secure social platforms, requiring back doors, etc.

Legislation has criminal penalties for non compliance.

Step 2. Jurisdiction will take 1-2 years to "police the perimeter" and identify entities within scope of the legislation.

Step 3. Ban-Hammer nails down non compliant platforms, enforcement phase. Usually 3-4 years after passing of legislation.

We are (in UK, Canada, aus, EU, ) currently in step 2.

Mozilla and all other entities may bring enforcement matters to court however once a law is passed it's really hard to argue against it.  Judges enforce the laws and interpret them.

I wouldn't assume mozzila backing protects from 1984 government.  Problem is most of those entities are doxxed and thus have balls to grab.  Government will grab them and squeeze.

solution : don't be doxxed. dont use legal entities like foundations or not for profits for your projects.  Do them a-la-satoshi and give a finger to the central state
