My wife uses this space heater during the winter. It does not mine bitcoin.

The way I see it, the energy spent on heat is a fixed cost. Any sats back from the S9 heater are a rebate kind of like how I got a rebate from the Oshi App when I bought the case.

I don't expect to get my sats back on my heater. It's not an investment. I expect to lose sats if I look at it that way. If it's a rebate, however, the sats are free.

I'm not doing it for the money. I'm doing it for the game theory. If bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable from a fiat perspective, who will run miners?

We'll need to find other ways to keep the hashrate high enough to prevent 51% attacks.

Energy used on heat that would be spent anyway is free bitcoin so the cost doesn't matter.

As the block rewards get smaller and smaller, I think mining pools will make less and less sense and yolo solo mining becomes more important. It's not profitable from an EV calculation, but people like to gamble. Lotto tickets are -EV, but states have no problem selling them.

Is there a way to downgrade the frequency of certain posters in my feed?

I want to keep them in my feed, but they post SO much that it drowns everything else out. I’d love it if they posted 1/3rd as often 😆

Your follow list is stored somewhere. Some clients store it on relays, some on your device, or both.

When you try a new client it doesn't know about your existing follow list, so it needs to fetch it from somewhere, but where? It doesn't know which relays you used in the other client. So first you need to fetch your list of relays, but this is the same problem, where do you fetch the relays from? So clients just have a list of popular relays hoping they can find your relay or follow list from there.

How can your follow list be suddenly wiped? The follow list is a list that is replaced on relays when updated. When you follow someone new your new follow list will be 'your existing follow list + new follow'

This means if there is a problem with fetching your existing list, your new follow list will be 'empty + new follow', aka wiped.

It could also be a problem with different clients not being able to correctly read your follow list. Originally follow lists were just lists of contacts, more recently clients have started putting hashtags in follow lists, potentially causing other clients to fail in unpredictable ways.

This problem will never be solved until clients start storing local copies, in addition to publishing to relays.

So if there ever is a mismatch, you can always go back to your original client to restore.

We’re at the state in nostr clients where “you can move between clients “ with the same key is no longer true. Logging into other clients can easily break your account on damus because many will wipe your relay list. Damus strictly follows your relay list when pulling data so that you have ultimate authority of what is received in your feed.

This is not the only way to do it, the gossip model model will pull data based on what other users define in their relay read/write descriptors, but then the user has less control on what is displayed and from where, as it becomes a decision that other users make on your behalf. This is actually good for decentralization but it doesn’t mean its the best or only way to fetch notes.

because this is not defined by the protocol, many clients make assumptions about how data is pulled. Many just used a fixed set of relays or use their own cache relay. Some use gossip model. This means logging into different clients might give different views of the data.

So if your damus account is broken by another client, sorry. All i can say is “warranty is voided if you put your nsec into another client”. And that is pretty sad :(

I prefer physical books to ebooks, but it sure does save a lot of luggage space when I want to re-read all of the Murderbot books before the new one comes out in November.
