What are some good features from other Social Media apps you wish Nostr would have?

Somebody telling me what to think and how to behave πŸ˜‚

We don’t really have it anywhere, but properly encrypted DMs

I think there's a NIP in development for it. Based on Messaging Layer Security encryption. I think 0xchat is planning to implement it once the NIP is formalized.

It's a really gross implementation and should not be used. At all.

What's wrong with it? I know early message encryption schemes were flawed, but I thought MLS was supposed to be solid.

+1. I'm kind of confused by the status of nostr DM across different apps, so I simply don't use them and revert to SimpleX.

Would rather stick to nostr only tbh.

Good question, not really sure. As for what I am building, I am adding a consultation capability where one user can record notes of a consultation regarding another user, sign and send directly when done. Maybe for social media, but not sure yet.

Another thing I am looking for is easy QR rendering of a noteid, so I can scan and zap. Users could publish the QR code of an even, all wallets could scan and zap.

Photo/video editing tools in the app before posting.

Damn corn you need to get paid as a consultant for these facts!

At this point, I really don't know.

Stories. They could last for as long as you want them to. I don’t know if that could be possible but it’d be cool.

do you mean short form Video? if so, I think that too - granted I don't use it myself, but it is a huge part of other SM platforms. A seamless way to post short videos, even at the expense of privacy at some level, could go a long way to pull in more refugees from other platforms. I admit that I don't know if this functionality already exists..

Yep and also these videos could have an expiration date like stories on IG and other social media. On IG, they can be up for 24 hrs and then gone from your profile. I don’t know either if this is possible somewhere else.

DM's that simply work.

Private groups. Like private Instagram accounts.

This one is tough. Until now, we have never known private on the internet. At best it is pseudo-private, but we get to have privacy from the public in exchange for both losing privacy and giving away control of our account data to some company.

That said, I think it is already being developed, and it will be real privacy, none of this pseudo privacy malarky.

#MLS (I think)

Ability to edit a published post or reply in case of an error or an afterthought to add.

Can be done in #Amethyst already.

Not sure how well it works across platforms though.

Notification when someone follows you

Maybe a nip for relays to allow you to subscribe for follows. Then the relay will keep an eye out for changes to follows for your profile and send you a notification as a unique nostr note type. πŸ‘€

Finding trending topics that are actually trending. Not just meat pics, growing nostr and good mornings.

... Those are what people are enjoying on nostr. That is what is trending... But maybe you mean that you want news, or maybe a feature where you share posts and articles you like outside of nostr and an AI tries to push content similar inside of nostr?

GM here is a growing meat pic..

This big time. Searching for stuff on most Nostr apps I've used is not easy, and neither is seeing trending hashtags. When I go to a search tab, I wanna be shown the top X number of trending hashtags in the last X hours.

I’d like to subscribe to a post or reply to get notifications of the replies to it.

I’d like to be able to pin post(s) to my profile.

Reply to specific messages in chat mode

A better integrated marketplace?

For Nostr or maybe Amethyst, I would love to be able to review all of my posts and the relays they are on.

Even if in an abstract way, where it shows a "health" of a post. I am paranoid sometimes that a post or reply I made some time ago never got seen and I ain't gonna remember all the notes I made that day, I am not worried about specific notes, I'm worried about any note being lost because it never got sent to all the relays I'm used to.

Every client shows me a completely different feed, I don't think that's right. I want to see all my follows posts.

One client reads from kind 3, another from 10002, it's a relay issue most likely... then damus, idk if it's cached an old event but I have yet to figure out where that's pulling from πŸ˜†

Granted I haven't checked the source code πŸ˜‹

I honestly think I don't need to know these stuff.

Like... Why are coracle and amethyst feeds so different? I haven't changed anything, just running defaults.

Your right. Should be ironed out, but it's not yet. Gotta have faith fren πŸ«‚

Half a feed is still better than the algos dw.

Private DM and ideally also private group chats

Already exists. For DMs see NIP-17 and the outdated NIP-04.

Collapsible comments 😁 sorry for the shit video quality, I recorded it with my potato

Paywalled content (both forever and with some sort of time lock til it becomes free) could be interesting imo

I wonder what this would unlock

Picture in picture (pip).

Somewhere to see your liked events

1) Be able to place more than one profile picture, as in Discord, where I can have more than one photo for each group

3) Being able to have more than one nick

3) More anonymity of the profile, being able to create an anonymous identity for some groups, such as SimpleX.

4) Know what relays our events are in (posts, messages, impulses, etc.)

5) Be able to see what someone wrote before the edition

6) You can add an image of the gallery as an emoji

7) Be more customizable

8) We may select a region from which we want to see posts instead of limiting ourselves to "global" and "near me," but in a way that does not prejudice anonymity and privacy.

Freedom to edit and delete notes which in the current state of the protocol is not possible.

It is possible on Amethyst :)

πŸ‘€ boutta broadcast all deleted notes

But that is only possible on Amethyst and not on the protocol level?

If it is possible on Amethyst, it is possible on the protocol. If other clients are not implementing it, it's their call.

But if others don't show the edits, it gives your users a wrong impression, too. Your users learn that they can be sloppy as editing is an option. Others perceive your users as sloppier than other clients' users.

The same is true for everything else that Amethyst implements and others dont.

Edits is waay too used for us to remove it. There is no way back.

Less is often more. You heard the arguments over and over again since you introduced edits and I assume you like it as is, so I knew I wouldn't convince you but I'm also square in the no-edits camp. More details in this note nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzq3huhccxt6h34eupz3jeynjgjgek8lel2f4adaea0svyk94a3njdqy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uq3uamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3dwp6kytnhv4kxcmmjv3jhytnwv46z7qpqp363kxquth9fsmrvxr37cvezwwwk9xtmrug8hukf8e5een6qvrjq678wk0

What is "everything else that Amethyst implements and others dont"? If you support kinds that others don't, I don't think the same applies as users don't treat the same events differently like in the kind-1 case where Amethyst users react/zap/reply to something else than others once the note was edited.

We offer fork posts, custom emojis that most clients don't see, reports, private zaps that only Damus and Amethyst can see, more recently replies via nip22 that only some clients see. Some clients don't even show content warning, post subject and don't even expire posts. There is a TON of kind1 things we do that other clients don't see.

Are custom emojis compatible with noStrudel? I replied with a banana ...

Reports are relatively common in more complete clients, too.

Private zaps ... if Damus and Amethyst use them, others will also follow. I just wonder what's the point to show private zaps others got, as they might have privately zapped themselves 🀷 Sure, if I got private zaps, I wish I would see for what and not only my wallet show funds received.

nip22 if widely used should also be easy enough and uncontroversial to at least display in other clients.

Post expiration might be controversial in the same spirit kind-1 editing is.

In the end I think most of the Amethyst features should be on other clients' todo list and they just haven't gotten to it yet. It would be good to have some research into who is missing out on which content. Gauge which account uses which clients and notify them if others are mentioning them in events they don't display for example.

It's not even about me anymore. Edits have been a huge success in term of usage with over 50,000 edits in the first months (before fiatjaf started spamming it). It's literally what everybody wants, regardless of what devs think about it.

When Twitter first started, people also wanted edits and longer messages, yet arguably it took off because of limitations not despite of them.

If Amethyst ends up being the preferred client of 5% of all users and fails to convince others to adopt editing, those users will assume they can edit as in fact they do, yet 95% of their followers only ever see the unedited version. This causes confusion and I think if other devs remain reluctant to adopt editing notes, retiring this feature should be an option.

Like I said before, I don't think this "confusion" is a valid argument. That is always going to be the case with nostr. Heck.. people are confused that different kind 1 clients show different feeds. If they post in one, it's not guaranteed that it will show on the others. So, to me this argument doesn't make much sense. Clients will never show the same thing. We must embrace this "confusion" of feature differences between clients. That's what makes Nostr, nostr.

don't know this is available anywhere, but I'd like the option to "borrow" (with their consent!) another person's feed for to see the space as they do. might reveal for me new folks to follow on my own, or just a way to dip into worldviews beyond my own, w/o having to take them into my space "permanently". let's call it "constructive laziness" or feed "touring", or boosting discovery.

and to take it to the absurd extreme, it could become a courting gesture: "hey! wanna see nostr like I do? let me share my feed with you. will you share yours with me too?"

"feed" might not be the right vessel, but the idea is that you have found cool things and sharing them _as a set_ reveals something that you value.

it seems it might have the potential to grow nostr engagement in a natural way, not in an algo-fed "for you" presumption...

[yes, spellcheck, it's a real word: nostr!]

You can do this on Nostr already! Just copy someone's npub and login with it. I just did it with yours, for example, and could see who has been DMing you (don't worry, I can't read the messages because they are encrypted):

I know it’s kind of against the principles of Nostr , but editing πŸ˜… , hiding and unhiding posts would be a good middle ground maybe , we get stuck with late night typo riddled posts for the rest of our lives 😬

Totally agreed. Subreddit format is very useful

I'm not on a lot of different socials but one feature I don't think I've seen on any other platform I've tried is a tab on the user's profile that allows you view only his/her original posts (reposts excluded).
