Your body adapts differently to different stressors. There ar different kinds of endurance. That high intensity stuff is gonna increase your vo2 max which is a predictor of longevity. The lower zone is more sustainable over time so you can burn some more calories. In ancient times that would have been your ability to outrun predators. Humans are the best distance runners on the planet. Itโs our one advantage over animals.

Interesting. So I run around 40 mins, start out slow and accelerate and at the end I run at full sprint. Do i exercise both of those kinds of stressors?
At the low end my pulse is 140-150 when running in slow pace, then at the end my pulse is 190. ๐
Same for me since the ๐
You do. Hereโs a helpful tip. If you are limited in time you can do a five minute workout that will be intense enough to benefit you. Sprint as hard as possible for one minute. Rest one minute. Repeat that three times. Check out Andy Galpin on Huberman lab podcast. Heโs a wealth of knowledge.
I will try that.
Have mainly been trying to work on weight loss and improve stamina.
Ive noticed HUGE increases in health benefits that are clinically measurable.
I used to suffer high pulse (90bpm) and high blood pressure (90/150) since I started running 2 years ago. Now i have resting pulse at 50-60bpm and bp around 70/110 when resting.
And as i said; i can regularly excert myself for long periods of time and even push my heart to its limits without issues.
Before this I would have died if I tried to catch a bus.... ๐
Thatโs great. Those are solid numbers now. Congratulations on the results. Hard work pays off. Donโt neglect strength training tho. That helps in elderly years when you start losing muscle. The more you have to start with the better off you are going to be performing daily tasks in old age like doing laundry or yard work etc.
I will do!
do you mean systolic value of 150?
Also had a similar issue last year.
Once I did more purposeful cardio sessions and daily walking, I am down to regular levels of blood pressure. (130-150/70) with a low/normal pulse
Man, you gotta read Born to Runโฆ itโll change everything. Got me out running. Within a couple of months of just running slow and not jacking my heart rate I did 17km, which I NEVER thought is something Iโd be able to do.
Ooh ok. Nice. Maybe I should try it. What should be the optimal heart rate for long distance? I think im ready.
I think that has been my problem thar I've purposely been jacking up my heart rate and being on the higher zones. I think that is what prevented me from trying out longer distance. Ive mainly been working on improving my times.
I keep trying to reply, would help if I was logged in with the right keys! ๐
Anyhow, I think that is unique for everyone. For example, my HR never goes past 180-ish, even during really intense exercise, but my resting HR is low, like 40 on average ๐คท
I think the general rule is, if you can comfortably hold a conversation (four word sentences), you're probably running at a good speed.

That helps, thanks! :)

Surely intelligence is the โoneโ advantage - learning to work together and carry our own food and water while travelling vast distances to follow prey etc. I understand humans can run long distances but so can bisons. It was us working together to isolate them and follow them till exhaustion that got us the steaks, while carrying our own food and water with us
