I wonder if it’s the caching feature. All Nostr clients should have a low bandwidth setting. Not everyone has an unlimited data plan.
Caching is supposed to eliminate the redundant data fetching issue that many nostr clients have. This looks odd, may be a bug.
Primal's caching happens entirely server side, then the client only has to read from the caching server. If anything, this practice should reduce the amount of data used, since the client isn't requesting notes from multiple relays and likely receiving a lot of duplicates.

Could be. Not sure how Primal handles that. I imagine it's really bad if auto-play is turned on, but not sure how much is downloaded when it is turned off, or if it waits to fetch the media until the user hits play in that case.

One recommendation I have is to disable background data usage and background app refresh. That would be a good start for managing your data plan.

Have you disabled the "autoplay video" feature? That reduced a lot of data usage for me in other clients.

The nostr protocol and most of its apps are designed to waste data as one of nostr's many methods of staying small (to keep internet discussions fragmented and echo chambered and crush the hope of people interested in free speech)
That's not true lol. Nostr has used less data for me than X did along with a couple of other applications.
Also convos aren't echochambered here like traditional centralized platforms. If you want true echo chambers, go to Bluesky, Mastodon. Those are true echo chambers that larp as decentralized social platforms.
Overtime Nostr relays and clients will improve over time to help run things more efficiently. It takes time to grow and nurture a new social protocol.
X definitely uses a lot less data than nostr. To create an edge case that shows otherwise, I'm sure the conditions have to involve X doing a lot more than nostr is being asked to do

Damn. I dunno then. I keep those options on unless I’m traveling abroad and don’t think I’ve ever come close to your amount of data usage. Probably cause I’m usually on WiFi. If you’re on iOS, you can try using Damus instead which allows you to completely turn off media previews.

Definitely uncheck “Allow background data usage”. You can also change your relay list to use only one or two relays

No worries, if you're looking to depend on one or two relays then I suggest nostr.wine which cost around 18k sats lifetime payment and then is a very high speed performant relay. Then I suggest using one of your own that you run at home. Redundancy is good so don't just use one relay because if that relay goes down then you could lose your Nostr events.
