Nostr's stats have been trending down for the last 6 months, obviously not a great thing.

Despite all of its bugs and other flaws, I'm still a bit surprised by this trend. I feel like, for various reasons, discourse on X is just so much more commercial and fake these days. Nostr has a lot of genuine conversations happening and our (PPQ's) engagement on nostr is MUCH better on nostr than it is over on X.

Is nostr really losing out? Are these stats real? What can be done to reverse the trend?

I think it’s part of a broader trend. Most people lurk (not observable in nostr data) and participate in group chats, not micro blogs.

We need better success metrics.

Where is this group chat feature? I've never seen it.

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I meant that in general, people are lurkers when it comes to feed based social networks. Since these people don’t produce any data on nostr, it’s impossible to measure them unlike centralized social media.

But there’s some nostr apps for group chats. I hope they see more adoption.

Remember twitter in 2007? No? Thats because it was invite only and thrre was less going on then here. Even 2008 and 2009 was quite quiet.

We are early on nostr. I think twitter got the edge after 2010 because of many political crises.

I had not seen people on twitter in 2010 writing "twitter only" like here on nostr.

I think to be able to tell if Nostr is losing, we have to decide what 'winning' looks like.

I don't see a lot of the same content here that I see on centralized platforms. Some would argue that's a win.

Maybe it's the bots going away?

Its the thing thats called summer in the western hemisphere 😉

Western? Is there no summer in the east? 🤷‍♂️

Sorry I meat Northern.

I’m fine with Nostr remaining a niche social network.

It may, however, become mainstream in other use cases (other stuff).

How is this obviously bad? You got fiat values hard wired or something?

I don't think that wishing number go up for nostr is a fiat thing. I want more folks to be a part of this ecosystem.

Yes but when number go down for a bit, that's just optimizing and also people taking a chill break. I'm using nostr every day recently because of the quality connections and information. If the quantity of other people go down, I don't much care. It's hugely succeeding. It would be nice if lots of other people used freedom tech, but they're not ready to yet. They need a streamlined on boarding to get situated and to not have to think too much about spam and stuff. The only people missing are the remnant of the centralized platforms who would love nostr if only they heard about it. That's the only thing I would say might be bad about this situation, taking into account how normies function.

People don’t go to X for discourse… they’re addicted to outrage and the Algo.

Nowadays yes, but Twitter in its old days was by far the #1 way I got my information in the topics of my interest. Twitter seriously changed the trajectory of my life as I learned about Bitcoin and other things. It still is #1 for me, but less so, and nostr is gaining.

Same, but don’t make the mistake of projecting your preferences and views onto society. A terrifyingly large number of people want to be placated.

I love it here, I hope more come

#nostr is there for everyone, even for those who don’t want it.

But the good things is it doesn’t need to be for everyone, as long as it’s available to them anytime. Which it is :)

The value is in the permissionless dev enviroment tho, so nostr will win, just a classic fossland adoption slump.

Those leaving x didn't have anywhere to go, now they have Bluesky, and it's pretty popular. Shame our game wasn't ready for exodus, I think less bitcoin centric client onboarding, better 1st impressions (I shoulder the blame for nostr dot com not being good enough for that).

Anywhere one can get data going further back? Limit on nostr.band seems to be six months.

Sucks. But we gotta hodl!
