It's almost like Nostr takes away the initial hurdle of buying Bitcoin away.
They get zapped $5 in magic internet money & then get to watch it go up & down over the short term. It's materially insignigicant to them so they don't investigate ways to spend it.

The whole idea of "stopping the bleeding now" as you put it and then starting to rebuild your life on a standard That will at least keep you level or help you improve over time is huge and a big reason a lot of people use / save in bitcoin. This is practically spot on. There is the issue of volatility however.
Here's the deal:
1. if you have no bank account or access to stable currency or credit
2. If you have accrued a lot of Bitcoin and can spend less than a small percentage in a given 4-5 years
Bitcoin only is your best chance of improving your life. You will have ups and downs, but they will never be as bad as your alternatives.
If you have western privilege, that volatility is going to appear problematic to you.
Imagine having saved up $1,000 via nostr and then it crashes to being worth around $200. This could happen. You have some options:
- stop using bitcoin and focus back on surviving with fiat
- continue earning in bitcoin, but now you're getting more sats because people can afford to zap bigger
When the bitcoin value bounces back... And it will, if you continue the bitcoin route, you'll be in a much better position than before.
That said, losing $800 is going to feel terrible. It really takes a lot of forward thinking to stomach it.
It can also be beneficial to have dollars available so you can continue living a more modest life while this is happening so you don't dip into your bitcoin while it is so undervalued. Those without dollars don't get this privilege.
Yes bitcoin is the way to change your life, outlook, mental acuity, hope for the future etc. There are quite a few books you can read or podcasts you can listen to really start diving deep. You're only a week in, it takes time to unlearn all the things you thought you knew. Don't rush it. Take your time absorb the info, apply it to your mental models. Bitcoin has a fixed market cap, but unfortunately you are wrong. Bitcoin can still lose value, just like any other currency. For example if a lot of people try to sell Bitcoin at the same time.
Be weary of people who say that Bitcoin can only ever go up and that you should hold on to it for as long as possible. Many of these people already possess Bitcoin and still want use you to cash out at some point in the future.
A big part of why people on Nostr criticize all other cryptocurrencies and call them "shitcoins" is because they feel entitled to the money that is being invested into those other currencies.
My advice is to ignore what everyone says and focus on what they do. In fact, ignore other people entirely and focus on what you can see is valuable in the moment. Does this make any sense?
