The Montana state legislature voted to ban TikTok in the state. The bill would prevent a company from allowing people in Montana to download the app.

https://leg.mt.gov/bills/2023/billpdf/SB0419.pdf

The bill states that the reasoning is because 1) China is an adversary to the U.S. and 2) TikTok promotes harmful behavior and collects data on users.

It was sponsored by a Republican and mostly passed by Republicans. Most Democrats opposed it but were outvoted. It still needs to be signed by the governor, and it would be open to court challenges.

I don't like TikTok, but that's not a promising snapshot for where lawmakers are in terms of software control.

Data Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Many other states (first was Arkansas) are also requiring extensive KYC + parental permission for kids (<18) who want Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. YouTube, truth social, and any other app are exempt

https://consumerchoicecenter.org/arkansas-is-inches-away-from-locking-millions-of-young-people-out-of-social-media/

I thought long about this over the weekend, as I visited some WWI internment camp memorials in the Canadian mountains. Immigrants from Eastern Europe were placed in work camps, not for being found guilty of a crime, but because they were "more likely" to be sympathetic to our adversary.

What happens if btc is framed as the currency of an adversarial state? Then those who hold it could be deemed as an enemy of the state. This is a narrative that I believe is possible, and one that a majority of people could believe.

If this happens, the state that pushes bitcoin out will eventually cease to exist due to capital flight.

In my scenario, the majority of people still believe in the state and are convinced that bitcoiners are enemies of the state.

We will see. Hopefully, not.

They will inevitably bow the to taxability of it in a sea of diminishing tax revenue.

I seem to remember hearing about another group of people who didn't fear their government and got branded as 'enemies of he state'. I think they were called the "Founding Fathers". You've probably heard of 'em...

I’m not sure if that’s an apples to apples comparison. The founding fathers were attempting to create a new state. Unless, you believe the future of bitcoin lays in the ability of us to create a new country and state completely separate from our current institutions?

How will they enforce such law? They can't "physically" prevent people from downloading the app (many ways lead to the market). What about the people who has already downloaded the app? You can't ask them to uninstall the app, or stop using the app. Complete waste of tax payers money.

PS: Imagine driving to a neighboring state for the sake of downloading an app. Ha!

App stores could disallow installing the app for users in Montana. Can be circumvented by VPN and/or sideloading. The domain itself could be blocked by ISPs for existing users in Montana. Can be circumvented by VPN.

I mean there's not a whole lot you can do in terms of restrictions that can't be circumvented.

"Tiktok may not operate within the territorial jurisdiction of Montana... An entity that violates a provision of this section is liable in the amount of $10,000 for each discrete violation and is liable for an additional $10,000 each day thereafter that the violation continues."

Not sure what they meant by "may not operate". Does this mean that people are not allowed to use the app? The company cannot do business in Montana? Or?

I mean America should shun TikTok for obvious reasons, but this is not the way.

you've been duped. Look into how much of americans data is being siphoned off by FB and T

Yeah, we should probably reject those, too.

I'm talking less about how much data is collected and monetized and more about how are attention is captured looking at an endless scroll of stupid drivel.

You think that doomscrolling will stop with a ban? We're a society of adicts. This will not stop it, and TikTok is not the cause of that.

I didn't advocate for a ban.

I live in Bozeman, MT, the governor's home town. He's a dick, as a person. He'll sign the bill. I'm terrified. Fuck Gianforte and the New Jersey horse he rode in on. Montanans are no longer in control of Montana.

But, we got cows and guns and, we know how to use them both.

I'm counting on Montanna to tell politicians to fuck off. Red or blue, doesn't matter. The constitution says what matters, everyone else can fuck off.

I think TikTok is horrible for multiple reasons, but primarily its connection to the CCP. Therefore my family and I do not use it. Having said that, this bill accomplishes precisely nothing unless they also ban VPNs.

googl is more horrible and criminal

they should ban and shut down guugl

the criminal drug cartel googl which censors everyone like hitler, stalin and mao did

and makes most of the money with lethal drugs

Wait, isn’t an app code? USSC has already determined that code is speech. Doesn’t the 1A still apply to Montana? What’s wrong with my reasoning?

Montana also passed a hugely positive Bitcoin bill at the same time…. Go figure

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Do you see what Utah did? They KYC’d TikTok

“The bills, which the tech industry opposes, requires all users to submit age verification before opening a social media account.”

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/utah-governor-signs-laws-curbing-social-media-use-minors-2023-03-23/

CCP started doing that about ten years ago. They’re just learning from the censorship master😂

Bitcoin is digital gold.

Tik Tok is digital marijuana.

I agree but in this case I think that TikTok represents negative value compared to free and open source software like Bitcoin. TikTok is a closed source centralized application that spies on users and frequently generates pedophilic content

I get the sense that this is a backlash bill. Essentially: You can’t legislate morality, but if people don’t regulate themselves at some level, then society will do it for them.

This is the pendulum swinging back from absolute hedonism.

I mean this would be way better than the RESTRICT act, right?

Data for me and not for thee!

I believe that, as more people start questioning their freedom, it will end up being an advantage for us, free minds.

it seems to me like regulators are taking the easy way out. Instead of trying to understand the problem from first principals, i.e., the app isn't the problem, the regulations around data protection and data gathering are.

As well as pushing for more education regarding our digital footprint and the data we leave behind. Also possibly an age limit on downloading certain apps, similar to how you cannot vote, drink, drive a car etc until a certain age. If we believe that social media apps have negative health/life consequences (which i believe they do) then we as a society should think twice when allowing our kids to be exposed to them, just as we do with the above examples.

There's a reason tech CEOs do not let their kids use these apps.

I don't use TikTok, but I oppose any bill that singles it, or any other company, out. They need to write laws that are meant to be followed by all, if they're going to do stuff like that, which I admit, I'd probably also oppose, but at least that's the honest way to write laws.

Good luck banning software. Political propaganda for normies.

Yes - ban the action not the actor. Whatever they think the app is doing (siphoning data / spying / etc) ban those things.

Literal boomers writing anti software law. Idk, to me the effect of TikTok on the youth seems as bad as the effect of Facebook on people over 60.

I would love to hear a telecom expert talk about how this could actually be imposed. Sounds ludicrous to me. I dislike TT, but no idea how you prohibit it.

it is irrelevant

the drug cartel called government cannot do anything about it

it cannot be enforced

like banning alcohol

or banning bitcoin

criminals always do the most stupid things
