One aspect of the enshittification of technology is that by turning lots of items into smart devices, we speed up their obsolescence.

I hate that my 6 year old TV, which is in perfect condition, is now relatively"slow" to load streaming apps and it regularly crashes.

It would be nice if the components were modular and replaceable, but that wouldn’t be good for business.

Keep them dumb but buy a powerful box the nvidia shield for example

‘Enshittification’ is quality.

Will be stealing that sir.

It's a Marc Andreessen coinage, isn't it?

Cory Doctorow

TVs are shitcoins

Isn't this two different problems?

One is the hardware and then the other one is the protocols/software

Case in point super fancy websites with way too much CSS JS WebAssem scripts trackets Not working for old browsers hence neobrutalism

At this point just don't see how IOT has anything to do with a TV being slow 🤔🤔 Time for some brain stretching!

...and serves as a security hole in your local network.

Highly recommend people to isolate their iot devices on sub VLANs.

firewalla has a nice feature set for the project inexperienced and no subscription.

You don't need a "Homelab" for this.

Yeah, trying to get a non smart device TV is becoming more and more difficult with every year. I was try to get “dumb” tv. And update streaming devices every couple years.

My gf's parents bought a new "smart" washing machine.

It's so smart that you can either do a fast wash of 30m, or a normal of 4h... Nothing in between.

And the best part is that in the app (yes, a washing machine has an app) it once said "clothes too dirty".

Like, wtf you are designed to clean them, not complain

yeah, i almost bought a purely mechanical controlled one last year when mine was broken... the landlord replaced it with the one that was in the other part of the house, it was also smart bullshit, and i've got a smart one outside here too, also seems to bug out a lot

Sounds kinda judgy. Just give me a machine with buttons and dials that doesn't talk shit about my clothes. That's all I ask for.

I hope it's a nostr app. 😎

Smart TVs were the worst idea ever.

I paid thousands for my LG tv only for it to show these popup notification ads every fucking time I turn it on 🤬

I literally think I’m just gonna buy a really big computer monitor

hack it and lobotomize it 🧠 📤

Just use a beamer + internet.

Our smart DVD player is the same... Slow and crashes regularly, especially on YouTube. TV is non-smart, so it's fine.

But, since it's older, Amazon Prime has no commercials! If we upgrade, the new devices running Prime will have commercials on some shows.

Was gonna buy a new TV on Black Friday, but they're all ROKU and I despise the ROKU app! Ugh!

It’s true

Combine that with how frontend engineering has prioritized developer “experience” over user experience and let classic engineering go to the wayside

And you get what we have today - mostly crappy experiences from fragile, over-architected codebases that get worse over time

Oh man! Tell me about it. I recently spun up Kodi on a raspberrypi 5 and am using that with a small full keyboard controller from rii. Its not perfect, but the control and the snappyness of the UI is worth everything. Slow TV UI is so annoying.

Btw, with the LibreElec OS for Kodi, I can run a mullvad VPN with a pretty simple CLI configuration, and now on top of better UI, I also have my TV running behind VPN all the time.

100%. Just give me a display with HDMI in and eARC out.

Don’t watch BUY NOW on Netflix, if the slow loading stream doesn’t piss you off the content will make you sad and insane.

All devices should follow the Single Responsibility Principle.
