I couldn’t wait for the next part because I wanted to share already. Everyone I know is a massive fan of Edward Hopper and his clear influence of film noir within his beautiful stark, lonely urban landscapes. His use of shadow and light give off such a mood and atmosphere which is somehow different in every painting. He captures such a a sense of isolation and unease with his solitary figures and empty streets.

His work also helped me find John Fante’s novels Ask the dust and Brotherhood of the grape. They set the same mood for me and I couldn’t put these books down.. highly recommend alongside a midnight stroll around gallery showing Hoppers works.

🙏🏽 I have seen the Maltese Falcon with Bogard as a teen, I bought Raymond Chandler and all that Detective, Femme Fatale, crazy plot twist books. What I love is the complexity of the characters but the stark contrast and simplicity of their representation -be it a painting, in a novel or in film. Also the influence of Film Noir in Film today is massive.
