How should the app deal with too many likes?
Crop them? Break them out? Just show "important" ones? Pictures partially overlapping each other?

They should collapse to the most recent like, with the ability to click and expand !
Maybe a like count after a certain number? Before that (maybe say 10) you could still show the pfp

Collapse into a truncated group ending with "..and 213 more." Upon tapping, expand the event to full screen showing all likes.
How about only showing 1 row, and when clicking it you go to a listview of likers a la Twitter? Twitter might suck but the UI is good.

I am confused. Private messages is about the content being private. People can almost always see who you are talking to.
I'm not a tech person at all 😅 but for me private messages are like on twitter or messenger where you can't see who people are talking to in private messages.

Twitter employees can see all the content of your messages & which people you are talking to. In that sense, it is not private at all.
In Nostr, people can see the names of the people you are talking to but CANNOT see the contents of the message. Only the two persons in the conversation can see each other's content.
Any plans for nip24 private messages?
Personally I don't have a problem with it, but I think users should know that it's different from other social media on this point :)

It would be cool if we could attach an expiry time on private messages so they could trigger an automatic deletion by the relays. Not sure if it would be technically possible though.

Give multiple notifications tabs. One for people you follow one for everyone else
This and posts with a bunch of tagged users have the same issue.
After a certain number of likes, it can take this format:
"Bob, Alice, Carol and 23 more"
Maybe "and x more" can expand the list (you'd probably want a way to compact it again too)

Agree, but it's slightly different though. Notifications were designed to look like a party around your post. Cropping the party feels more wrong than cropping a boring reply list.
Max. 3 overlapping images. If there's more you tap the images to see the entire list, which can be displayed like a regular Iist of notes.
You could even merge other replies back into that list of likes for a complete chronological view of all responses.
To be scalable I would recommend either icons in horizontal line scrollable. Just number of likes, and when user clicks on the likes number show them vertical list of icons and names
I think after a certain amount the older ones start falling off or are lumped into an all modal.

Remove likes. Only Zaps and Boosts matters, because they transfer value.
Arrange them in color that nostr related pictures are forming from the mosaic.
