I don't always understand why people expect others to do the "protecting" of privacy for us.

Yes, I agree that there should be standards and measures for privacy protection from institutions and businesses. Leave it to a few bad actors to ruin everything for the majority.

Ultimately, if you're truly concerned of your privacy on this day and age, use the available tools and be mindful of your surroundings and what you're willing to put out there.

"There is no freedom without privacy", blah blah, sounds like whining with expectations from everyone else to do the work for you so you don't have to change and make sacrifices.

PRIVACY ISN'T A GIFT, IT'S WORK. WHOSE JOB IS IT AGAIN?

Privacy seems to be Proof-Of-Work ultimately.

And it also seems like perfect Privacy is or nearly is impossible.

Perfect privacy would mean sacrifice. Totally off grid, no signal, self sustained.

Digital privacy has existed at most for three decades. Takes a while for a reptile brain to adapt.

I agree that people need to take privacy into their own hands, and I think the majority of people that care do.

BUT

I also believe that the current landscape in technology does require others to make changes, protecting privacy for others.

Two corporations, Google and Mozilla (funded mainly by Google,) control all of our modern web browser options with questionable privacy in mind. Gaming? Forget playing some of the things you may enjoy if you want to have privacy with your operating system. And smartphones are a whole other disaster in that world, leaving virtually no good option beyond Google or Apple's OS. Linux phones lack a lot of basic functionality still.

In short, we lack basic tools for privacy in many areas due to lack of legislation, and a lack of effort from large entities that should be putting in effort. Because of that, it's unreasonable to think that we can just be mindful, use certain tools, and be fine. We DO need other people to change and do some work so we have the option to be more private digitally.

There was a time when we could choose to be private. That ended when people were made to believe that by sacrificing their privacy they could be safe. That by sacrificing privacy, they could offer you better products to sell to you.

Would you really trust the same people who took it away to give that back?

Not necessarily. But even your own country, Switzerland, has legislation requiring FOSS software exclusively to be used by government institutions. That's a huge step in the right direction.

Now imagine if we had similar legislation for consumers. I don't have an exact answer for what the solution is, but it would force companies to change and more consumers would be aware of privacy implications even if the legislation got repealed.

I hope that's the case but while that's being legislated, if even, people will need get smarter than whine all day about their privacy because let's be honest, a majority of people gave it up freely.

That is 100% true. You can't sit around and whine about it while also not taking any steps in the meantime. At that point it's just wishful thinking.

I see the parallel with the people that "just want to help the poor" but leave the government to do it instead of volunteering themselves.

It's the human condition to want an outcome without working for it.

I try my very best to not be like that, but I know I fail every once in awhile.

there is no freedom without privacy

and

there are no rights except those you exercise and defend.

Agreed. Just like how you can't have 1A without 2A to defend it.

But you may have without your permission gave it all up in exchange for your safety.

something safety something liberty something something

deserve neither

There is no freedom without discipline.

Cheese and I were on a similar track earlier, we were discussing the subscription business model. I get it, but sometimes/most of the time I'd rather just pay to own the product and then in a couple of years pay for the upgrade. That led into discussion about how that incentivized making a newer better product every few years to make money instead of suckling the subscription teat and never revamping your product while simultaneously selling all your personal data.

We have cancelled most of the subscription services we once enjoyed because of the privacy issues, and the rising costs. Privacy is important, but I agree that the only way is to become a recluse, live off grid, and never see family or friends that have cameras πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Limited exposure seems to be our best option for now.

If you made it this far, enjoy your day and do something that brings you joy! πŸ«‚πŸ’œ

I always do something that brings me joy. πŸ™‚ In fact I’m still swimming in joy after finding out I’m going to be an aunt. I must crochet baby booties in 9 months.

Beyond excited for you! Being an aunt is so much fun 😁. I think I have a pattern from a magazine, I'll try to find it and share it πŸ˜†. πŸ§ΆπŸ’œ

I'd love that. πŸ™‚πŸ™πŸ»

But I'm worse than beginner. Whatever, I can do it. πŸ˜„

Lol, it was a beginner friendly pattern. And I can share resources, youtube was my teacher. You can do it!! πŸ˜¬πŸŽ‰

I can assemble an engine but making things with yarn is HARD. πŸ˜…

πŸ˜‚ I promise it gets easier. Hopefulhoney.com had some great slow mo tutorials for beginner stitches. It's all repetition once you get going.

Thank you! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’œ

I'm glad you mentioned slow mo because the kit I got came with video that wasn't very easy to follow and a little booklet with codes in it...patterns in codes!! πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« I wasnt expecting to learn a new fucking language.

Yes, it is a language πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. She was good at pointing out the things that were going on, and she has a nice voice πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. The kicker is UK and US terms are different double crochet means a different stitch πŸ™„, the pattern usually says which terms are used.

I appreciate the tip.

I will be starting soon. 😬

The available tools might not be good enough though. For example firefox has started collecting private data. So what privacy friendly browser can you use? Thinks get harder...

I spent 20 years living under harsh communism, a time when I had no means to voice my concerns about the lack of freedom and privacy. Now the circle is closing, we are once again in danger. I didn't whined in my post, but rather raised an alarm for those of you who have no idea what the absence of these things really means. You can only imagine, perhaps.

I don’t expect anyone to defend me or my rights, I can do that myself. But what about those who cannot defend themselves against the dangers that lie ahead? It’s my duty to awaken others because I have gone through these experiences myself.

Cheers ✌️
