EU Age Control is the first step towards totalitarianism via digital IDs and digital euro.

"first step"

For one because they think they can remove games from my Steam library which I've owned for years just because they tighten up around age ratings on games.

I'm too old for age ratings and I paid money for these games, they are perfectly legal and I've invested time into those.

EU agenda is pretty clear, control and repression,

while hackers are stealing user's profile and selling it on dark web,

double punishment for users

1. Because we (the people) didn't ask for it

2. We don't want to pay for something we didn't ask for.

3. It's expensive

4. It adds unnecessary control, surveillance and friction to most users (all responsible grown-ups), while doing very little to actually prevent crime amd harm.

5. Bad people who have the incentive can always bypass controls.

6. Parents should be, and are responsible for teaching kids and controlling their , not the school, not the society and most definitely not the government. If they need help there can be programs offering help but "help" and "protection" should never be forced to responsible grown-ups.

It's paternalistic and a tool to curb privacy online, wrapped in "for the children". KYC for going online.

How will it curb privacy?

Trick question? Proof of age is proof of being a human born before a date. To prove your age you will have to show your ID.

Yes and no.

Yes, you will need a digital id and this bullshit will make literally everyone get one.

No, you will not show any part of your ID to service verifying you. Digital ID is a digitally signed data structure. That is transferred using zero knowledge proofs into a proof of age and possession of valid digital ID, but is completely unlinkable to anything else. No part of your name, date of birth, etc is going to be transferred to a third party and the proof is done locally on your device.

The problem is, the device is also verified using attestation. Goodbye to Linux, if you don't have Google certified or Apple device, your CPU will not sign a valid attestation.

The whole app and process is completely open source. But you can't run it anywhere and if the code is changed, the attestation becomes invalid. Also no GrapheneOS, etc.

There's more, but this is the core of it.

So you know for a fact that "EU age control" what your question is about, doesn't further identification? I find that naïve to think even if for now it's only a plausible argument to herd people to setup digital ID.

It furthers identification by forcing people to digital ID. The age verification tech does not support identification, there is no way with the app to verify age with identifying, so the platforms would have to use it differently.

You can clearly see it was designed by privacy nerds, which is very sad to see that they would go for it, but here we are.

For me the main problem is the digital id itself, for many reasons, for example there are people who have no ID and can't get one. They will be left out.

And the second problem is you can say goodbye to non corporate computing. It needs Google approved Android (both os and device) or Apple device.

Because it's totally useless. Kids will get around this anyway. And criminals also. And the only ones suffering from this will be those people, who didn't need that kind of "protection" to beginn with. And I don't trust government systems to be able to protect my personal data. I know how they code, I know their IT standards. So it'll just become another honeypot.

true, please not another instance of the GDPR nonsense

more bloat on the internet

Users will have to navigate through more pop up and buttons to access a service. And of course, If they do not accept the terms or fail the KYC portal then they cannot use the service.

Waste of time, and more frustration ... Consent is broken at this point.

It's dragnet KYC for everyone, whether intentional or not. Also the consequences of the Hawthorne Effect should be considered. The concept of freedom is nearly impossible to measure in such a state.

How is it KYC?

I did not know about Hawthorne effect, I was simply calling it the panopticon, thank you.

It's KYC because the adults are the only ones who actually have an ID to submit. So while children may indeed not be able to use the service, every single adult who does has now been forced to give their full identity. This can be saved along with other data to for use by government, commercial actors, or data theives. I use KYC in the loose sense. It isn't technically, but it has the exact same outcome.

There are some exception in the US where a 16 year old + may have an ID, but that's an edge case.

The only freedom oriented approach is to allow parents to parent their children rather than have the government do it for everyone.

It's in the name: control

Because I've never liked the EU? 🤷🏻‍♂️

You don't like the cookie pop-up?

Everyone loves the cookie pop-up!

Everyone loves pop-ups! We've known this since the 90's!

The EU age control problem: Implementation without collateral privacy loss relies on trusting institutions that have proven untrustworthy.

I don't like control.

Thinly veiled attempt at ending anonymity for purposes of narrative control.

How is it ending anonymity?

The solution should be focused on better options for granular controls, allowing parents to better control what their children have access to (privately), and me to control what I am forced to view. UI and built security does not require government intervention, it requires them to stop regulating so businesses can innovate these solutions and try different things. The free market will find the solutions if allowed.

Why hasn't it. Or hasn't it?

When I was 7y my grandma let me watch jaws. Sure I’m a grown man who doesn’t like swimming in the ocean, but DAMN I tasted freedom when I was young 😃

EU age control is good, but why not have everything combined, before you can go online: to prove that you are of legal age, that you are not a terrorist or a child predator, that you are not far-right, that you are not North Korean or Iranian, that your funding sources are legal and transparent, that you did not acquire your citizenship through investment, that you have been vaccinated against COVID-19, and that you are not a politically exposed person? It would be simpler and more honest.

because it does not solve problem. I have another problem, which is brain washing of my kids brain with shorts. remember the time YT player was w/o shorts? I want to have control of what my children will consume. It is my responsibility. No bureaucrat will do it better than me. (btw my 10y old son hacked the family link in 2 days).

and also fuck the state..

I don't like age discrimination.
