Yep but some clients don't handle that well either. Had a buddy use it in open app and it didn't work in another.
At least that the last thing people can do safe guard their news feed . To filter their feed is by putting tag NSFW

Keep your follow list to people and things you truly enjoy, visit curated relays for stuff beyond your follows, stay out of anything called "global", "trending", or "universal", use a client that supports NSFW filters, shut off video autoplay just in case. If unpleasant things start showing up in ypur replies, you can mute and/or change your inbox relays as needed. Nostr offers better tools for you to control your experience than any platform.
So like regular porn or illegal stuff? Because I assure you, the folks (read: FBI) posting the illegal stuff don't give half a shit about your heart or mine.

As terrible and graphic as it is, I'm glad there is at least a way to preserve this because on every other platform it has already been removed. My heart goes out to him and his family.

Sorry, that's just not going to happen -- you definitely cannot deal with this issue by asking people to use the NSFW tag. Not everybody is in a position to see things that others don’t mind seeing. It’s not being weak. It’s just being respectful. Please honor @Jestopher ‘s request to tag videos and posts as graphic or NSFW if you’re not already doing that.
The idea that people who want to post shocking/nasty stuff are ALSO going to want to tag their posts NSFW..... is hopelessly naïve. (Please excuse my umlats, I was a long-time New Yorker subscriber in a former life.)

i'm building a general firehose at the moment for my paid gig and i had to just blanket disable media loading because of the garbage that was being found on the popular free relays. i definitely agree that all media being only rendered as links should be an option for this reason, because of jumble's relay feeds. and it should default on for relay feed views, so maybe even better to have two options, one for all, and if that is disabled, you can just disable relay feed media loading.
the spammers are making full use of the free resources certain people are giving them.

it also would be good from the perspective of reducing bandwidth usage too, and speed up display, especially helpful for when using on mobile

Does your client support https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/36.md ? Both Nostrudel and amethyst uses it for tagging nsfw content. I don't know how good is support elsewhere.
