the Gnome project as it has been for a long time is very streamlined and the devs seem interested in minimalization and feature removal. any time I've run it, it requires plugins to make it useful (IMO) and plugins break on updates — often.

KDE tends to be clunky but has more options without the need for plugins.

Since I bought a new laptop, I'll need to install linux on it. (I may not bother installing windows on it at all.)

I have used Linux Mint and Pop!_OS (The dumbest OS moniker ever, IMO). Pop has been wearing thin. Mint was stable but not exactly . . . cool? Inspiring? And also just another debian fork.

If you were to recommend to me a flavor of linux, what would it be? I am NOT a dev, I don't game, and I mostly just complain on nostr, surf, and use freecad on occasion. I would like to eventually be able to run more local nostr stuff. I do not need to do anything too heavy with graphics of compute as I will never run an LLM on the laptop directly. If my T420 wasn't literally falling apart and costing more to fix than a new used laptop, I would be totally fine with it forever.

I have low technical prowess which is why I've stuck with Mac. I need something simple and beginner friendly because I don't have the time to invest right now in deep diving into this stuff. So I'm looking for ease of use and something I can incrementally learn as I go

I use Macs OS for over a decade so it's going to be weird to me. Someone told me it's the easiest Linux to use because it just works lol

go with nixos such a great os with reproducibility easy to rollback if something goes wrong and use gitea server for backing up configuration files. remember to use different midules and flakes is better. but ubuntu at beginner level nix is steep learning curve.

As time went on, I always switched to a more durable flavor. I was tinkering and breaking it when it wasn't really necessary, or updates over time would break it. I recently switched from Opensuse Tumbleweed to Fedora Silverblue. Fedora Silverblue (Gnome) is worth a try if Appimags and Flatpaks are enough (they are enough for me). For KDE, Fedora Kinoite.

It's just the most stable with the KDE Plasma (IMO) than it is with Linux Mint (I've done both...with Mint, the KDE is more clunky)

TheForest is write-protected, except for reactions and zaps. If you put a message in the zap, it shows up on some clients.

We're going to take that a step further and make zap messages above a certain amount display like replies, in the thread. We put that in the GRW prototype and it's very cool.

Love nature, small villages, rural locations– not too crazy about cities. Have also considered Ecuador, Bali, Laos, Vietnam, Norway/Sweden… the list goes on. Let the universe decide!

Do you have a quiet, private place you could offer us for a few weeks / months? (We are willing to pay in sats!) Do you need a reliable and trustworthy pet sitter / home sitter while you are away for a while? That's how I ended up with a metal kettle and glass pour over (with metal basket) for coffee. The coffee makers all had weird plastic smell/taste (and I'm skeptical of hot water through plastic anyway. I found one from Bunn I think but it was industrial and ridiculous for my kitchen. 😂
