👨‍💻 software developer 🔒 secure element firmware dev 📨 nostr.land relay all opinions are my own.

About the operating cost, I feel like it is a matter of perspective as well.

When someone runs their own Plex server for example, they can easily justify it as one-time costs, they take responsibility for certain things, certain costs are “indirect” like power/bandwidth, and they do not see the value of their own time.

But if you wanted to do something similar for a larger user base, now the users see one big number that includes the hours you spend, “infrequent” hardware failures becoming a weekly occurrence, and you now taking on risks like copyright.

I would be willing to bet that many services are cheaper to rent than self host if you include all the hidden costs and time and other resources spent.

Same with me though. I'm with nostr:npub12262qa4uhw7u8gdwlgmntqtv7aye8vdcmvszkqwgs0zchel6mz7s6cgrkj. That's what I build and want to be building. I tend not to see something worth building if it can't take a minimum of 1000000000 rps.

“big, scalable systems” should not be conflated with “centralized platforms” as well.

For example with relays, there are many reasons people might want a scalable and high-performance option.

Aggregators will exist to do search because local search is almost useless for anything that is out-of-network. There will be projects that want to store huge libraries. Certain relay providers will become large as they have expertise that many others don’t.

Scalable and reliable systems if designed right also bring many benefits even if you run at smaller scales, by being more efficient, and taking less time to maintain.

And sometimes you don’t benefit from everything. If you are building a personal notes app, decentralization or all the other Nostr benefits do not matter and come at a significant cost since you’re the only user seeing it and can self-host it.

In that case you want *data portability*

Try out nostr.land. Significantly more features, and some things are coming for Primal users to improve performance specifically

No one said blast it all over the place

The use case is for personal hosting. I guess what is really needed is

- some way to bridge personal archives and Nostr archives (extension to self-hosted media libraries)

- a spec to organize media that is not kind20

You are currently in the state of “if you have a hammer everything is a nail”.

This is no different than the people trying to put blockchain on everything, or that say AI is needed for your fucking microwave.

Nostr inherently is good for (semi)public use cases. You don’t need Nostr’s features when your use case is a media app.

A centralized database works just fine and gives you better efficiency + flexibility because 1. it makes different tradeoffs and 2. you’re self hosting it anyway!

more specifically can it run the Linux that I want so that I do not have to agree to their ToS that says they can sell essentially a real-time screen capture to advertisers

nostr:npub1a00wj229auzjswlq4s77y4u8eqdx5k9ppatgl8rtv8va65f6mwksum9q3h is finally shipping to my country, but the price, the price! Fuck, we can’t have the nice things anymore due to stupidly high exchange rate and we missed the early time when it was much cheaper due to the shipping not available to us 😭😭😭

https://daylightcomputer.com/

but can it run Linux

🕑 benchmarking…

You also shouldn't close the Nostr.build window when doing the sign-up, just go back to Primal, copy the code, and come back to the Nostr.build site and paste it

When you go to the tab view check if you selected "Private" or " Tabs"

Something like this OK?

Super excited to announce a nostr:npub1nxy4qpqnld6kmpphjykvx2lqwvxmuxluddwjamm4nc29ds3elyzsm5avr7 + nostr:npub1gt9gms5hr3l6548zxgn7xvcvcmzxyzgdsrrelrdwxwmj0exz7jaqdjlxjt partnership!

Nostr.build is one of the first and largest media hosts for Nostr, hosting over 2.6 million uploads, 2500+ a day.

Nostr.land was the first paid relay for Nostr, developed by Semisol, same dev that brought us Nostr Plebs NIP-05 names.

Together we are building out one of the largest partnerships on Nostr, offering a complete solution for your media hosting, relay services, NIP-05s and more!

** Now when you purchase or upgrade to a Nostr.build Creator or Advanced Account, Nostr.land Plus is included, same price.
