Chat Control trilogue negotiations to start 9 December – the EU Commission continues to spread misinformation about the Chat Control proposal.

Today, EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner visited the European Parliament and announced that the trilogue negotiations on Chat Control will begin next week, on 9 December, with the ambition of being completed before April 2026.

During the questions from the MEPs, it was obvious that Magnus Brunner is following in the exact footsteps of former Commissioner Ylva Johansson. He stated that he is not satisfied with the Council’s compromise proposal; in his view, the scanning does not go far enough.

During the questions from the MEPs, Brunner continued to spread the Commission’s Chat Control misinformation.

Markéta Gregorová, from the Czech Pirate Party, compared the Commission’s proposal to the police opening all envelopes in the physical world and asked Brunner a direct question: “Since both the Parliament and the Council have decided to question your approach (no mandatory scanning), will you play an honest broker in the negotiations in the upcoming trilogues or will you be pushing for more scanning?”

Magnus Brunner:

“I think our scanning suggestion was quite … we were suggesting a targeted scanning. I don’t quite understand … is that really what you are saying, that you want to compare protecting our children to privacy of opening up envelopes?”

Markéta Gregorová: “That’s what’s in your proposal.”

Magnus Brunner:

“First of all, we must protect our children from this harm, to be honest, there are criminals, I think we have to do everything to protect them, I don’t quite understand why you sort of always balance … in this case I’m really clear, our first of all priority is to protect our children from this abuse. We don’t have to agree on everything. Me as a father … it’s incredible, what’s happening in this world. It’s not about Chat Control, it’s a complete misunderstanding, no it’s not about Chat Control it’s about protecting our children and it’s about fighting against pedophiles, that’s what it’s about. That’s my approach, it’s not about open envelopes or Chat Control.”

Magnus Brunner follows the Commission’s tradition of just answering “what about the children” on every question, and continues to spread the misinformation that Chat Control is targeted scanning.

Birgit Sippel, from the Social Democratic Party of Germany, also asked for figures never mentioned in the discussion:

“There’s one figure I didn’t hear, and that’s just how many children have been saved from these situations of abuse, because of digital investigations, how many have been protected from these cases of abuse? I haven’t found any figures on that."

Magnus Brunner: “On identified victims, I don’t have any specific figures.”

Since Chat Control has been up for discussion for almost four years now, it would be remarkable if Magnus Brunner did not understand what his own commission is proposing. Therefore, the only plausible explanation is that he is consciously following in Ylva Johansson’s footsteps, striving to mislead the EU population. It seems certain that he, in the event of a “failed” Chat Control negotiation, will continue working toward mandatory mass surveillance through the ProtectEU initiative. We remind once again of the corrupt origins of Chat Control and what truly lies behind the legislative proposal: http://mullvad.net/blog/mullvad-vpn-present-and-then

The European Commission will not be an honest party when they lead the negotiations next week. We can only hope that the Parliament stands firm. Javier Zarzalejos, who is the chairman of LIBE (Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs) in the Parliament, was straightforward on the Parliament’s position: ”The proposition from the Commission was very problematic in some areas. All political groups finally supported report of the Parliament and we will to the trilogues with such strong mandate of the Parliament.”

So xcancel in the link stops the traffic being registered at X?

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Here's the problem for me with making war on such vocabulary, it is that these words mean very different things to different people. When I was younger (70s/early 80s) socialism meant the common man against vested interests. Now it seems to mean enforcing dogmatic concepts like transgernderism, and is often equated in the minds of north Americans with Marxism, and by extension Bolshevism. Same with capitalism in the minds of its opponents, it is equated with corporate power and centralization (crony capitalism), which I am sure is not what you are describing (I think capitalism and the drive to "capitalise" are an inate human characteristic). So we end up in this war denouncing "socialism" or "capitalism" when I actually think the problem is much deeper. Sorry, I do not have answers to solve this, I just like questioning things.

Many socialists too would say, that real socialism has never been tried. But the issue seems to be more about centralization rather than capitalism vs socialism. I think there's an inherent trait in humanities' mentality, that leads it to centralization, to look for leaders etc. And I honestly am not sure how this is easily overcome.

Yep, I'm back in Tokyo.

Accidentally liked my own comment! Can't undo on nostr

Ah, so the website. Okay, I thought you were talking about an actual desktop app. No worries, thanks.

Hey nostr:nprofile1qqs9xtvrphl7p8qnua0gk9zusft33lqjkqqr7cwkr6g8wusu0lle8jcprpmhxue69uhhqun9d45h2mfwwpexjmtpdshxuet5qythwumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnsv9ex2ar09e6x7amw5254wh for the last couple of weeks the desktop client has been struggling, primarily displaying notifications or settings.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

There is a desktop app for Primal?? Anything for a Linux desktop?

They are dissolved or consumed by the fig (not sure if that is the correct terminology)

Not trying to be a smart arse, but yes. I have told many over the years. Some reacted angrily, "why did you tell my that, I didn't need to know!"

For me they are different things.

Mullvad integrates with nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqwr5azetlyy80apyxfp6y3eky3j54g0typwh3ceuftwvur4dmqjesuer6g2 meaning I can incorporate it into my private LAN.

I can also run Msyterium to use home broadband exit nodes, eliminating VPN detection.

Thank you! Need to look into this!

Last night at this time I witnessed a drowning.

I was about to go get a wave for sunset and a lady frantically ran up to me asking for help.

I saw people struggling in the water from a distance, started sprinting over and yelled for nostr:nprofile1qqsruc574qq9ty9hehnpszmxrl2kdds4ujs5vauekwhz4ahtpamx29qppemhxue69uhku6n4d4czumt9qyv8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnnv43xzum5d9uzuer9wcte2hxq to join the effort.

The man was unconscious by the time we got there and we helped his lifeless body get to shore.

His wife and teenage kids were there and some friends. Many came to assist the effort. It was a horrendous, desperate scene with the kids and mother screaming and wheeping.

Despite multiple cpr classes, nothing prepares you for the real thing. I felt quite unprepared and I can’t help but wonder if all of us did what was best to save the man. I don’t think he made it, but have not confirmed.

Man that was heavy. It was tough sleeping last night as I laid awake reading about how to deal

With this if there is a next time. Massive respect to first responders to those who deal with situations like this on a daily basis. And prayers to the family who may have lost their dad.

My dad had a similar experience when his best friend died. He tried CPR but was told he was doing it wrong by a bystander who took over. It was too late anyway (heart attack while white water rafting). Took him time to get over it, but he did eventually.
