Last night at this time I witnessed a drowning.

I was about to go get a wave for sunset and a lady frantically ran up to me asking for help.

I saw people struggling in the water from a distance, started sprinting over and yelled for nostr:npub18e3fa2qq2kgt0n0xrq9kv874v6mpte9pgemenvaw9tmwkrmkv52qgpr7cu to join the effort.

The man was unconscious by the time we got there and we helped his lifeless body get to shore.

His wife and teenage kids were there and some friends. Many came to assist the effort. It was a horrendous, desperate scene with the kids and mother screaming and wheeping.

Despite multiple cpr classes, nothing prepares you for the real thing. I felt quite unprepared and I can’t help but wonder if all of us did what was best to save the man. I don’t think he made it, but have not confirmed.

Man that was heavy. It was tough sleeping last night as I laid awake reading about how to deal

With this if there is a next time. Massive respect to first responders to those who deal with situations like this on a daily basis. And prayers to the family who may have lost their dad.

I don’t know you personally beyond Nostr… but from what I can gather I’m certain you gave it 110% and he had a far better chance with you being around- regardless of the outcome. Take careπŸ’œπŸ«‚

That kind of trauma strips away the insulation on your nerve endings.

That insulation never grows back.

You just learn to live with it.

You did everything you could.

Take peace in that.

Que tristeza πŸ˜”πŸ˜’ por dios

It is a horrible experience, I myself went through this a few years ago with a child, very devastating. Many sleepless nights for the first few months. Gratefully and sadly the memory will fades

The hardest part I found initially is knowing life just stopped for one but the world did not notice, it really changed my perspective.

I hope your peace returns soon πŸ™πŸ»

That's intense. It's important to let moments like these stop us and make us pause for reflection on what's really meaningful. πŸ™

I was a first responder for a few years. Nothing but gratitude and respect for those individuals in the field everyday. πŸ™

You did the best you could! Thanks for sharing

The feeling is natural. The first patient I had to do CPR on in the field involved all the same emotions and so did many more. But to act was greater than not. You did what you could and no amount of training prepares you for real life. Even when you think you've got it down, there's always something different and new. You did a great thing.

Man.... that's wild.

I'm so sorry that happened. I hope he made it. I how you're okay.

Much love to you and yours fren.

Wow man. 🧑

Oof... survivors guilt is tough. Breathe and be gentle w urself for at least 48 hrs after

The current this season has been intense.

I'm sorry you went through that. Let me know if you need to walk and talk or something. I'm around! That's heavy stuff, don't go it alone.

super heavy. thanks for the support. you know where to find us πŸ₯

Damn dude, that is heavy

Unfortunately, death is something we have to experience in life. We must be exposed to how precious life is.

I wish you best friend. πŸ™

Prayers up, tobacco down, for all beings involved

πŸ«‚

oof πŸ«‚πŸ§‘

May God watch over his soul, those of his family, as well as yours. πŸ™

Ooof, that's tough man. 😞 I'm sure you guys did everything you could. That's all anyone can ask for!

πŸ«‚

Whoa man. That's really brutal. I'm grateful you shared the story. I'm remembering the other fatality we saw there.

The ocean is no joke.

It's to be respected πŸ«‚πŸ«‘

I had a similar experience mountain biking. Came across a kid yelling for help standing over his dad. Long story short his dad hit a drop and smacked his head so hard it cracked his helmet and brushed his skull. He fractured his neck, broke a rib, and had brain bleeding. He was out and snoring for 8 minutes and in and out of breathing. I was the first responders to the scene and was shaken up for about a week.

I can relate to how you feel. Stay strong and appreciate what you have! 🫢🏼

Heavy

Witnessing things like this is not easy, prayers for the man’s family and everyone involved πŸ™πŸ½

Truly our time on this earth is finite, hug those close to you extra tight next time

Thank you for sharing

πŸ«‚

Prayers. It never is easy but you get better in the moment. Hope you don’t deal with it again for a while if ever. We know you did all you could and then some.

πŸ«‚

Sending Prayers πŸ™πŸ½ sounds like you did everything you could to help. Always respect the ocean 🌊

This is Uvita area?

Stronger than usual currents?

My dad had a similar experience when his best friend died. He tried CPR but was told he was doing it wrong by a bystander who took over. It was too late anyway (heart attack while white water rafting). Took him time to get over it, but he did eventually.

Sorry to read this my friend.

Hopefully you're able to make peace with it, sounds like you guys did your best πŸ™

Gosh intense Paul. Death is very hard to witness when you see it up close

That’s tough. You did what you thought was best to try to save a life and that’s commendable. Nothing more could be asked of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family who probably lost a husband and dad last night.

🧑

Rough, whatever you do don't blame yourself that you weren't able to save them.

Wow, if you had a surfboat at this time, you should be able to save him https://www.yachttrading.com/new-yachts-for-sale/yacht-type-sportyacht/

Was he surfing?

I experienced a similar situation one month ago.

Someone very close to us who choked and "drowned".

This person is still in the ICU and we pray that he can come back.

Life is precious and uncertain.

Don't go too hard on yourself, you did what you could at the time, with what you had.

πŸ™

In the movies CPR rarely fails, while in reality it rarely succeeds. That's a really tough thing to experience first hand, you did your best and you should feel proud to have tried even if you didn't succeed. πŸ«‚

Our minds are in sync. Instantly bolted. We did everything we could. He did pass away πŸ™

Thank you for doing everything you could. <3

πŸ™

Really feeling for you

Take care of yourself

I was an in-water rescue specialist for a SAR organization when I was younger. I was the one who trained for jumping into the water and retrieving people, performing CPR and any necessary first aid while I was there. Swim through surf onto rocky shorelines to get trapped and / or injured folks to safety etc.

One of the first things that got drilled into us on the medic side was that CPR almost never results in the person coming around like on TV. Your job is simply to keep oxygenated blood circulating until the medical attention needed to revive them is available.

I would have been astounded if you reported pulling an unconscious and non-breathing person out of the surf and had them come to on the beach.

If it's any consolation, there really isn't anything you can do to fuck up in that situation short of doing nothing.

thanks for this. good to know. prepared for next time.

That's crazy man

πŸ«‚

Thank you for being there. Gracias por tu presencia.

Sending you hugs from a distance…

That's rough. Thanks for trying. 🧑
