"The U.S. must remove capital gains tax on bitcoin for payments to thrive."
Care to explain the logic underlying this conclusion? Because on the face of it, it seems like that would help *speculation*. Anything that's good for people speculating on an asset tends to be bad for people trying to use it for anything else (eg payments).
"If you're interested in Cashu development, please get a Matrix client"
"We're going to nuke our Discord server very soon."
Awesome! I challenge all open source projects to at least set up bridging, so people can use a Matrix account to access your existing chat room.
Postal services not offering hosting business email (digital PO Boxes/ private bags). Although TBH they should have started that pivot 10-20 years ago.
You know what? I do like an ago smash. You like eggs on toast, biaaarch. Don't be hating on my avos.
Fuch the haters. Go brunch!
10am is early my Nigels.
This isn't how anything works. The most fundamental currency is energy. USD is the reserve currency because it's the petrodollar. Gold reserves haven't backed the USD or most other currencies since the 1970s.
Have you read the manifesto? It's been a decade or so since I did. But from memory, unlike, say, the Christchurch Shooter manifesto, it doesn't advocate for or try to justify violence. At least, no more than other dark green writers like Derrick Jensen who aren't murders (AFAIK). Much of what Kaczynski wrote is almost mainstream now.
You sure that's the same guy?
Just set up my Nostr identity on a second client, for the first time. Boy was that painful. Let's compare;
Fediverse:
1) enter account address
2) enter passphrase
3) click 'Sign in' (or whatever the enter button says)
4) When you're redirected to your server's website, give permission for the app to access your account as you
Done. That's me breaking it down to as many discrete steps as possible. Normie's already find this hard to understand.
Here's the process of setting up an existing Nostr ID in Gossip, simplified into a few steps. Most of which are really multiple steps.
Nostr:
1) Safely export a copy of your private key from your existing client
2) Safely transport a copy of your private key to the client you're setting up
3) Paste a copy of your private key into the client you're setting up
4) Add a passphrase.
5) Add relays
I got there. But as I suspected, this is *way* more hassle than normies can deal with.
Worse, this is a burner ID for tire-kicking purposes. So I didn't have to worry too much about the security of my private key. If it was an ID I was really invested in, and I had to investigate and quantify the security risks of the available key management methods, I'd be at it for days.
Matrix does the equivalent thing with QR codes. Could Nostr apps do the same?

I wouldn't delete it. That allows someone to set up a new account that squats your username, and pose as you.
I'd just change your bio to say "Gone to Croatan", and leave luggage tags pointing to where you can now be found (email, ,npub, XMPP, Matrix, fediverse, etc). That way you can passively red pill people out of there ; )
Why aren't any of the Android clients for Nostr available in F-Droid, except for Amethyst? F-Droid seems like an obvious way to get Nostr apps into the hands of people keen to try them.
Exactly my point. Open source practice evolved around sysadmins and software engineers who would never deploy a line of code without reading and understanding it. For precisely the reason that even official repos can never be trusted 100%.
Linus' Law (many eyeballs makes bugs shallow) was coined for the same reason.
Something similarly horrifying, but much redder 🤢 I wonder what would happen if you put some humans in a sealed plastic container and added Ebola?
The OP is classic Social Darwinism, which is what you get when sociopaths set out to use vaguely misunderstood scientific philosophy to justify their own antisocial behaviour. The apotheosis of this is Agent Smith in The Matrix.
The particular misunderstood science here is the ecological concept of food webs. This person is still using the "food pyramid" version of this. Which ecologists abandoned a *long* time ago, because it ignores all our everyday predators of the single-celled and fungal varieties.
Can anyone recommend a Free Code app for Nostr, for use with GNU/Linux (suitable for a Mate desktop)?
What do I mean by Free Code? Essentially the same thing as Free Software, but without the price/ freedom confusion.
What do I mean by a Free Code app? An app made entirely of Fee Code.
People will say any app is Open Source, as long as free licenses cover *most* of the code it's made up of. But an app isn't 100% Free Code, it's not a Free Code app.
#Nostr #FreeCode
Organisations really need to start auditing the code they use, or using distributions that pool resources to do that work. Deploying code without doing one or the other can never not come with risks like this.
That's pretty cynical, but it's not like people haven't been warned that the crypto world is full of scams ...
I can't see what you're replying to, but I agree in general. It's easy to take basic civil liberties for granted, until you've spent at least a full year living in a country where the authorities don't even pretend to recognise them.
Anglophone and European countries are far from perfect. but some of the political innovations they've adopted are worth preserving.
"I’ve also talked to the ahau.io folks about porting from SSB to Nostr. I think it makes a lot of sense."
100%. I had the same thought, asked the fediverse, and ended up in paralysis by analysis 🤪. Now I've got a better sense of how SSB, AP, AT and Nostr are similar and different from each other. Next time I'm in touch with KM, I'll also be suggesting a SSB>Nostr rebase.
I am keen to know if you've evaluated HoloChain, and how you think it compares to Nostr. Are they maybe working on different layers? Could HoloChain be a way of hosting relays?
"Also really weird that I know a bunch of people who worked on the together project and cashless but didn’t know they were doing that."
Didn't know who else was working on it, or didn't know what they were really working on?
I think allowing people to use decentralised social network credentials to identify themselves to other online services is a great idea. Go for it!
FWIW I don't believe there's such a thing as "best privacy practice" in the abstract. As with security practice, whether a given practice is dangerously sloppy or crazy overkill depends entirely on your threat model. It's important too not to let perfection be the enemy of the better.
"I think the plan is to spin the directory out into some sort of ICANN like non-profit."
Or instead of reinventing the wheel, they could just use DNS for indentity, like the fediverse does.
Mike Macgirvin's work across Zap/ Streams/ Forte proved that NomadicIdentity can be used in an ActivityPub network. Takahē proved you can support many domains one one AP server. If all AP software supported both, you'd have BYO domain and fully portable accounts in the fediverse, without any of the centralisation of BS.
"many a startup has abandoned such benevolent plans. They do seem like a passionate team though."
Indeed, which is why they talk about a future version of BlueSky as a potential adversary, as discussed in this [detailed rundown of ATProto's pros and cons](https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/) by Christine Lemmer-Webber of Spritely Institute. They know it's vulnerable to enshittification, just like any other centralised platform.
Remember all the big EvilCorp platforms had open APIs when they started, and openwashed this as distributing power to users and third-party app devs. To paraphrase The Matrix, we've been down that road, we know exactly where it leads.
Would it be possible to build a decentralised Fetlife on Nostr? Including all the Trust & Safety stuff they have, to make it hard for sexual predators to use their platform to find marks, or customers for sex trafficking.
