Just because you can do more to harden Linux than #Windows doesn't mean Linux is weaker out of the box. It's not.

Windows needs a firewall because it has so many network services installed by default. In contrast, default Linux installs have minimal services running, none of which are listening on the network. Having less attack surface is more secure by design. So your firewall example just highlights my point.

There are, of course better things than a stock #Linux system, of course. #OpenBSD would be one. #Qubes would be another.

But this whole battle of the OSes debate is tired. You do you. The rest of us will do us. There's really no need to try to convince me to switch from open source software to corporate, propritary products. I didn't ask which operating system I should choose.

Can't blame me for trying. 😂 Best of luck finding someone to mesh with. 🫂

Yeah. When I reinstall the gaming PC, I'm going to try this.

I've heard people talking about it working extremely well as long as you use PCI pass through to give the VM direct access to a video card. I look forward to trying it myself.

It's just not worth the effort to go through setting up all the Windows software again unless I have to. Plus I worry that some old, unsupported programs like SketchUp won't install anymore (on hardware or in a VM). I've moved on to FreeCAD now but I still have some old models that would be tedious to recreate. They're not super important, but no need to lose them sooner than necessary.

The looks are a personal preference. I certainly don't think Windows look more professional, even ignoring the adverts in the start menu. Then again, I've been in infosec for 15+ years, so my perspective has been shaped by that.

Can't speak about battery life since it's a desktop.

Can't speak to any Wayland isssues either. I haven't come across any.

Yeah, gaming is where Windows still shines. In my experience, the games that support both Linux and Windows run faster and are more stable on the former.

But so many game developers are Windows only, going that route opens up quite a few more possibilities. And there are very few Linux-only games that don't have a comparable alternative on Windows.

Games are literally the only reason anyone in my family has a Windows box. But we do have that one!

For #nostr in particular, it means meaningfully engaging with people. The people on nostr noe don't care much about celebrity gossip. Teach people something. Inspire them to create something. Give them ideas.

I've had a #marketing person independently confirm what I deduced about getting the word out about what you do:

1. Think about your target audience and what they like. In this case, maybe disaster preparedness folks, outdoors people who have the courage and desire to wander outside of cell coverage, people concerned with surveillance and/or censorship, and so forth.

2. Figure out where they hang out and how you can reach them. Reply to forum posts where people are asking about off grid communications. Sponser podcasts that talk about these issues. Buy banner ads from bloggers.

And unless you're dumping tons of money into huge advertising companies, don't expect fast results. Organic growth takes time and effort. Like months or years.

On the flip side, it's not a lot of money, plus you get people who really appreciate the content and are less likely to get distracted by the next new thing that someone is advertising.

Narrator: but in reality, the fees were nearly zero with the Bitcoin lightning network, while the highest fee for traditional Bitcoin transactions was $16... and $1.25 for next day delivery.

If people can't find enough reasons to hate on something they dislike, they'll just fabricate some, or jump on someone else's fabrication. Social media is so toxic in this way, especially on reddit, and doubly so on forums dedicated to not something they like, but to something they dislike.

Why spend time on Buttcoin when you could spend time on a forum about tacos or gardening or something.

2024-04-22 is Earth Day. Please respect the planet for this one day of the year.

I do my best to respect it the other days of the year too.

Fellow #gardeners and aspirational gardeners, hit me back so I can follow you. And boost this so others can find this thread and thus, each other. #GrowNostr #liberty #freedom #security

I'm a fan of Kennedy's policies, but if I might take just a moment for some real talk related to some claims he made in April 2023 when he announced his campaign.

1. Caring for autistic people is going to cost $1T by 2040. I found a paper on pubmed on this, but it has since been retracted. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37273157/

2. Sweden didn't close businesses during covif and fared better than everyone else in the world. Seems like a mixed bag at best. Here's a study published in Nature saying there would have been fewer deaths had they implemented a mandatory lockdown. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-45934-2

The committee that the politicians convened to review their decisions agreed with their decisions in general, but even they also concluded the government should have taken more action up front.

3. The CDC didn't follow its own pandemic guidelines. I can't find anything to back this up apart from an OPINION piece in the WSJ a month before Kennedy's announcement. It's paywalled, so I can't really dig in to this claim. If it were true, I'd expect to find lots of articles talking about this... pretty suspect if you ask me. https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-pandemic-cdc-follow-science-guidelines-lockdown-mask-distance-16257e38

So if I like this candidate, why point out things that seem to be bullshit? Doesn't that give ammo to his opponents?

First of all, because it's the right thing to do. Whether you like someone or not, it's okay to call them out when they are wrong. I'd go as far to say it's good, and that it's part of a healthy debate and discourse.

As for giving his opponents ammo, they already have plenty. They can just say he was a drug addict and some people will write him off. They can say he spreads misinformation despite that he was talking about a paper published on NIH's site (and leave out the fact that it was retracted after he made the comments).

I really hope he is in the presidential debates. He'll have to answer for the things he actually said and have an opportunity to refute the made up stuff. And if they focus on policies that actually affect everyday Americans... 🔥🍿

Kennedy tells it like it is. I'm watching his speech from a year ago when he announced his campaign for president. https://www.kennedy24.com/historic_presidential_announcement_in_boston_ma
