I once read this guide from the 1930’s on how to pick out a puppy.

You place the dog gently on its back and then hold it there lightly but firmly.

If it makes no effort to flip itself over it’s a chill/lazy dog who will have a mellow personality.

If it struggles to roll over for a bit and then acquiesces and relaxes this is a dog who will take instruction well and is very trainable.

If it won’t stop fighting you and keeps trying to roll over the whole time this is a high strung dog who will remain high strung. Will be hard to train and needs to be put to work in an active way.

According to ChatGPT this was known as the supine restraint test and it was rooted in dominance theory which is currently debunked.

But I’ve always found it useful as a metaphor.

Are you the dog who fights for a little bit and then gives up? Are you the dog who doesn’t fight? Or are you the dog who will keep fighting until you finally get what you want?

keep fighting dog!

GM - gotta have that dawg in you

I'm this type of dog

Great metaphor, this also says something about nature versus nurture.

Some people are predisposed to different things as part of their genes/nature. Can’t make every dog a retriever.

Seems accurate to me. The dog's temperament should also match the owner's, you are a team afterall. A softer dog under a hard, demanding owner doing field trials may quit under tough conditions - cold wet and miles of work.

On the flip side, an independent dog that was the dominant brute of the litter, paired with an owner that can't enforce the rules consistently or give him enough hard work, will be a pest and a delinquent brat.

I prefer a middle of the pack dog, that must be the kind of owner I am. I fight when I can, but sometimes you just need to paddle with the current awhile in order to miss the rocks.

In the words of Mike Ritland, he’s looking for potential Military Working Dogs to have a prey drive of 12 / 10. Let’s continue to be MWDs and get after it! No lying down!

I’m the dog that keeps fighting for what truly matters, stacking sats, building, and not giving up until the system works. Some days I chill, some days I train, but the important battles never stop.

I first read this as i am the dog that keeps farting 😭😭

Uhhh

I was like, wow so calm he let one out💀

Eh. I disagree.

i dont think it helps to categorize puppies this way

it is just about relating

a puppy that has to pee will fight to get off their back even if they are otherwise chill

as in, situational

and sure, in general, a very trusting puppy doesnt mind like 'oh maybe this is a belly rub thing, im in' but that can quickly change if you then hurt that puppy or hold them down too long

like to the puppy this is: are we friends or are you psycho

sure a puppy with inherent stranger danger views everyone as psycho until proven otherwise, a more anxious alert dog, a more watchful careful one

larger breeds tend to be more chill cos they are more secure cos bigger and can afford to give you the benefit of the doubt

a chihuahua cant afford to be that way

Definitely bread dependent

yes

a large dog can climb on a table, break thru a crate, and even eat you

whereas a chihuahua is fucked if you accidentally step on them

and it shows

variation for women?

"Gently, lightly, firmly" yeah, I'm cool with that.

I’m that stubborn dog that does what it wants, doesn’t train very well when told what to do, and still pisses wherever it wants. I’ve even been known to hump the air.

i am the dog that falls asleep lmao

Fights are motivating, but winning is empty if you can’t enjoy it.

How did so many people respond without reading the last 2 paragraphs?

It be like that lol 😂

'Fighting' is too vague for me, sorry.

I did this to my dog for the first ~6 months of him being a mildly disobedient puppy. Lightly but firmly held him on his back when he was misbehaving until he submitted. He is the most obedient dog I’ve ever had now.

I'll be your huckleberry.

I'm more of a cat person myself...

Im just a Dawg lol

I would probably be the kind of dog that if you tried to put me on my back at all, I'd probably bite you.

What you say?!?

I’m the dog who stays in the corner because I don’t want you to pick me and take me home.

I think it's a good metaphor. But it needs bit of warning too. Nature more often than not punishes those that are not able to live by it's rules. Nature doesn't give a fuck about "what i want" and "how i am born". She roots out those that can not adapt. So, being too suborn and non changing, can be negative trait too.

Only thing that is constant in whole universe is change.

I'm the dog with a dangerous half guard. Lockdown to Electric Chair coming right up. I believe every serious man should take 100 bjj classes, 100 crossfit classes, and 100 Arthur Murray dance classes before they decide on a career path.

is there a part of the test where the dog reacts differently with different people, and he picks u? as in it connects to someone.. Which would translate maybe to "Pick the fights worth it"

Mostly I’ll fight to get what i want. Depends on how important the particular result is.

If I know it will get me out of the pound, I'll be dog C.

Never give up

And what if it’s been god holding you the entire time?

Debunked

I'm the dog who keeps quite until it's time to strike 😏

Awesome post!

Gotta have that dog in you

Well interesting but eventually doggo doesn’t really get what he wants does he? As human gets what they want so not sure about this analogy tbh. Unless doggo does the work and gets a treat but still doesn’t get complete freedom… I don’t things dogs really want freedom that’s more for cats

Tbh I’m thinking to become the doggo instead who does a bit shit in someone’s shoe and chews everything

And then looks cute

I am the third type, but most people are not.

Are you the dog who uses ChatGPT?

Apparently

DMX is my dawg
