Are there any experienced runners who could please give me some advice on how to get the habit started? What would your advice be?

I've recently started walking more consistently and throwing some mild jugging into it. Been quite awhile since I just ran for the heck of it.

I'd appreciate the advice, knowledge, and wisdom. Thank you.

I've never been into running. Walking I think does better on the knees.

Why do you want to run? I find walking to be much more stimulating. Allows you to think a lot more than while running. Listening to podcasts, music etc.

I'd suggest starting by running circles around sheep.

Funny, but the point is, mix it up. I ran cross country in high school. Do countryside runs, sprint intervals on a track, parks, trails, establish a goal to run in a race not worried about time unless you wanna be. Stretch before and after always. Push through the first mile pain and the rest gets easier.

Thanks 🙏

Herding the sheep with you and nostr:nprofile1qqs9ccktnl7c4fcfrvyemxqfgs5a9gj8q8hm0h4ed3wt36xl0dpf7ygpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3qamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wd3skueqpzpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejscg0f2u is kind of when this interest started. 😂 🐑

Starting habits is the hard part. You might be able to find running groups, set reminders for yourself, assign yourself consequences for skipping running days, post results for public accountability, get a running mentor/partner. Running with a friend or group is significantly more enjoyable.

I ran cross country too. Find somewhere pretty and calm to run and enjoy the tranquility. Or run with a friend. That was the funnest part of cross country, was just hanging out with friends while running. And if you find a hilly spot, run there and push up the hills. Then running anywhere else feels easy. Start slow. If you go out hard the first day, you get really sore and then it sucks.

I wouldn't call myself an expert. Like you Dan, I walked for a while and then I felt like I was speed walking, and eventually I wanted to run. I just ran until I my heart rate was about 155 and then stopped and walked for a bit until it was under 120 and then ran again, rinse and repeat. I did this for an hour or so, doing about at 5K.

This will vary for everyone. You're younger, so heart rate will probably should go higher. Each day I ran or each week I would push myself to run longer or farther. Eventually I got up to a 5K, running the entire time. Before I hit that milestone though, I needed new shoes. I got myself a nice pair of Skechers running shoes. I also bought myself a pair of Shokz bone conducting headphones. My earbuds were lose or falling out. I fucking love them. I also started wearing boxer briefs when I run. Never wore them before. I've been wearing boxes since I was 11. The boxer briefs keep the junk from bouncing all around. And lastly I eventually bought an arm band to strap my phone to my arm. I always listen to music or podcasts. Shrug.

I'll keep the pace and grow like you suggested. That's similar to my current goals. Thanks for the advice and reaching out.

I got the boxer briefs so I'm good on that one.

I'll need to update my shoes soon, but not yet.

Can I get a link on the headphones? 🎧

I'll look it up, but am curious to what you specifically have.

These are so good.

not really Derek, they good at reducing the pressure in canal but only useful indoor and quite surroundings. I can’t listen to the podcast on the go, if it’s traffic/noise outside.

I used them for the last 6 months. They do exactly what I want them to do. I can listen to music and podcasts and I can easily hear if a car is about to kill me. I bought them to hear the outside world and my music or podcasts are the same time. They do so much better than my Pixel Buds and Pixel Buds Pro that I used prior to that. I can hear external noises and they don't fall out of my ears.

you must be using the amplifier then or your ears are better than me, I can’t cancel the external noise and pull them off, only works in two scenarios.

1. In office and

2. Running in nature

but gives you great situation awareness.

Ah. I don't live in a city. It's very rural here. I only have a dozen cars at most pass me while running around my neighborhood. The other times I'm trail running.

I am jealous now that you live in peaceful and stress free environment, but they are good. I haven’t tried with android and found that windows boost the music more than my iOS on Shokz.

Shokz++

Had them for a good 7 years, and they're life changing. Big issue is that they're so convenient to have on that I'll go to meetings with them still on my head not realizing they're even there. They're off at that point of course, but it's not the best look...

just as everyone its a habit thatyou will develop over the years, find a side kick for motivation or join a running club. If you around Brisbane you can find many and some park runs are fun way to get going for long time. Once you are on the wheels train will not stop. You may find some on meetup apps. I was like on-off runners till April last year , bit once I found a nice club here then it become easier. Also other factor that bribane weather helps.

Find a run club to join. It makes it a lot more fun and they are generally very welcoming. They usually have some for all skill and speed levels.

I was able to build a run habit with interval training. It’s important to start very slow and build consistency. I would suggest starting with something like jog for 1 min then walk for 4 min, repeat 4 times for a 20 min workout. Do that for 3 days in your first week. Second week, add another round for a 25 min workout. Third week, add another for a 30 min run.

From there every week you make small adjustments like run for 2 min then walk for 3. There are a bunch of apps out there that can give you a training program to follow and give you guidance when to walk and when to run.

I think it only took me about a month of consistent training to start to really crave that next run.

This is the way! It’s how I started 12 years ago. Though I’ve had some breaks along the way, I’ve never really stopped. Ran two marathons. But mostly I just like to jog anymore.

I don't run outside much. I do run on the treadmill. I notice the first 5 minutes are the WORST. When I power through them and make it to 10 minutes it becomes a gun challenge. Then when I get to the 10 minute mark I think to myself why not go for 15 minutes? And so on and so forth. I usually stop at 15 unless I'm feeling very motivated and go to 30 or an hour.

So maybe timing yourself might be helpful.

But honestly I find power lifting to be an efficient use of my energy. I work out practically every major muscle in half an hour and then I'm exhausted.

Just start with short distances with a tempo that is the most fun to you. Slowly increase the distance over the following weeks.

If you lack motivation you should tell yourself to stop being a bitch and do what's necessary.

I really like the free guided runs on the Nike Run Club app. It’s like having a running buddy in your ears and you can choose how long of a distance or time you want to do. https://www.nike.com/nrc-app

I used to run 5Ks, but no longer do it. Started with just 1 mile runs several times a week part of a winter running program in way back in school. It helped to do it outside in a nice natural environment. Keeping the breathing and pacing was the hardest, but what helped a lot was listening to music to keep pace. Having regulars like a runners club also helps
