Can someone recommend a private journaling app that syncs between your mobile device and linux?

Obsidian is pretty good. Not quite journaling, but great note-taking app and has template add-ons that might do what you need. Has syncing via a paid encrypted storage acct.

Is it a one time payment?

The subscription is annual, unfortunately.

Obsidian + syncthing works well for me

What is syncthing?

https://syncthing.net/

It's a bit of a learning curve to set up, but works really well. I use it between desktop, laptop & phone. I take a photo on the phone and it's on my computers in seconds. Drop a file in a synced folder, boom it's on my phone.

It has limited functionality on iOS though, due to no background processes.

Is this free?

Yes, free and open source.

Time to open terminal again

Monitors folders/files and keeps them synced across your devices, has some powerful advanced features too. You can configure it to monitor the folder where obsidian saves your notes on both devices.

I've used Joplin for that, synced using my email provider's file service

Sounds complicated to set up lol

Go to settings in email provider, copy WebDAV, paste into Joplin settings. Not complicated.

What is that doing exactly?

Joplin can sync to several common cloud services, like OneDrive. It can also sync to any provider that supports the WebDAV protocol for reading and writing data. My email provider includes file storage that supports WebDAV. It gives me a WebDAV address that tells Joplin where to put my files, and I set up a key that gives Joplin permission. I use that for Joplin sync instead of getting a separate subscription for a cloud service. https://joplinapp.org/help/apps/sync/

Standard Notes is an option

I have standard notes but it won't pin to my panel and it really annoys me lmao

Yeah, the free version is missing a lot of the paid features...I'm still hoping Proton will throw in SN premium...😅

I thought that was their original plan when they first acquired them

Me too

Notesnook

I actually might have a year free that I can give you. Lemme check

How much is it after?

I think pro is like $5 a month, but the free tier or essential plans are probably enough for most people

Since it has come up twice, obsidian is a great notes app. The note files are plain markdown making them portable and editable in any editor, if it were to go away you can't lose your data.

There is a paid plan where they sync inside the app for you. OR, you can use ANY file sync you want to keep your phone and pc in sync. You will know exactly where your files are and they are plain text so no risks of weird binary files getting corrupted or weird file locks.

You guys are gonna make me Linux... Not today, but sometime soonish. Prob Android phone (possibly graphene, though I've been burned by that before), THEN Linux sometime later. Baby steps

Linux is easy to start with. You can even dual boot, so you have your old OS to fall back on while you learn.

⚠️Always have backups before doing anything crazy with your computer⚠️

I have a Linux laptop. It hasn't been turned on in over a year. It got borked beyond repair and I had had enough of it. Fresh install of Ubuntu (was using Pop prior), but I just can't vibe with it

Ubuntu isn't that great. For a beginner Linux Mint is a better option IMHO. Mahdood is running it I believe.

Depending on how good the hardware is Fedora is pretty nice too. I run it on my gaming rig.

Noted. I just .. can't right now. I'm dealing with enough as it is. Soontm

I tried this with my desktop but I felt that a clean start would have been less taxing mentally.

GrapheneOS is great, nothing like the ROMs of the olden days.

Linux is also great. I'd recommend buying something cheap or bringing an old computer back to life to take away any risk of losing your files.

Both are more resource friendly because they are missing bloatware and spying. I posted a talk earlier today about the war on general purpose computing you control, Linux and GrapheneOS are bringing it back.

Yeah, wrt graphene, I'm considering it anew after reading some of what max wrote about it other day. I assume it's come a long way in terms of user friendliness since I last tried years ago. I was also trying to use it as a super secret no-KYC phone at the time, so could be part of why I struggled (I'm not hacker enough to not leak my identity to imaginary surveillance I worry about)

Yeah, Google Compat is nice. Google on your phone but only the bits you want and sandboxed unlike a typical Android where Google has god mode to see everything.

Aside from some apps that blacklist it, usually banks, it is just an Android phone that gives you more control and privacy.

Bank apps don’t work properly with graphene?

Some apps run a check to make sure you are using an approved version of Android and refuse to install or work on GrapheneOS.

It is worth to me. Also no tap to pay.

I don't use tap to pay anyway. My phone is already involved with too much of my personal life.

Smart man. Tap to pay just aggregates all your purchasing data for yet another data broker to poke through.

Gd it! Why must life be so hard! But yeah, seems obviously bad now that I think about it

Apple Pay and these other weird portal card payment providers just feel like adding a second middleman. Kinda feel bad for businesses. They’re already sharing revenues with banks and taking on most of the risk of a charge back. Now you wanna add big tech to that mix? It’s fucked up until I go to a business that tells me they don’t accept cash. GFY.

I know, now that I stop and think about it, but damn if I don't feel high tech using double tap, Face ID, tap to pay, while the grandma in next aisle fumbles with her wallet.

May have to reconsider giving Apple my info so easily. Or maybe I get an Apple credit card and put that in tap to pay, limiting my activity to just Apple two times (one less spy) 🤔🤨🧠

Don't you carry a wallet? Most cards have tap to pay anyway.

My main CC doesn't lol. Not sure why, probably need to request upgrade.

Mine doesn’t either old card. 🤣

When I was working retail one of my favorite interactions was seeing people contort themselves to orient their Apple watch to the tap sensor, it failing repeatedly, and then them having to fumble through their purse or wallet to find a card to pay with.

My pet peeve is person handing me change back WITH receipt. Trying to foist the receipt into my possession so they don't have to spend energy to trash it (I guess). I'm quick to say "no receipt" as soon as possible for small purchases, and STILL many try to toss it in bag or insert it in my hand, and seem annoyed when I'm like "no man, YOU toss it, I do not want it". Am I imagining this?

I don't like receipts because they're covered in hormone disrupting chemicals that your skin absorbs. A lot of places require that you show your receipt to someone before you walk out though. I guess more bull testicles is the solution to receipt touching in the modern age.

I'd forgotten about that aspect. More reasons for them to quit trying to give it to me. Again, I might be crazy, but I could swear a lot of cashiers are annoyed when I simply cut them off and request no receipt. You'd think they'd be indifferent at worst, but I swear some of them take personal offense or something

It’s possible they’re offended but just remember that being a grocery store cashier is a lifeless job with no end in sight in a fiat world. Most normies have no plan to exit the rat race. I rarely come across happy and energetic cashiers anywhere. It may not have anything to do with the receipt stuff. You can’t read minds so best not to speculate over an encounter with a total stranger.

Yeah, I've cashiered a bit. Not much fun. I make an effort to be a pleasant and efficient transactee, but the receipt games many play annoys the shit out of me. I acknowledge I might be a bit crazy and imagining this. Do me a favor and test this for me? I must know

What do you want me to test exactly? Lol

Just observe interactions when you say "no receipt". Do they seem annoyed? Do they try to foist it on you anyway?

I say no receipt all the time and never noticed anything lmao stop being a weirdo overthinking shit that doesn’t matter 😂

Sigh, will run fresh experiments and accumulate data. Not convinced yet

There are much better things to do with your time friend 😂🫂

Maybe it's the cutting them off part.

I do it smoothly. Before they're in act of handing it off. I have my theories, but will await mahdood's feedback

Can't say I've ever noticed it. I just say "no thank you" and I'm on my way.

Youre wrong, or I'm crazy... oh no!

It's possible we differ on the amount we read into other people's emotions and motivations.

I'm possibly very "sensitive." 😅

My feeling too lol people have their own shit to deal with they aren’t even thinking about you once you walk away

This has been insightful. Will stil run my experiment, but beginning to think it's in my head. Could explain why I find socializing exhausting lately

You are one of hundreds of people they will deal with in a day, they likely don't even remember you, or particularly care about the interaction.

I remember back selling car audio as a young man, customers would come back weeks/months after we put a deal together to finally purchase it and get it installed. They remembered my name, all the items, the prices etc.

I had done setups with hundreds of other clients in the meantime and didn't have a clue who they where. That's why I gave you a quote sheet man 😅

I get that. I'm not thinking the interaction is specific to me, other than that many just take the receipt, while I often don't. I will give up this theory soon, unless my next few observations support it.

Btw, this isn't like a major thing I focus on, just a small thing I thought I noticed over time. Just obsessing over it in this thread for some reason, and I keep it to myself IRL, so wanted to float it here anonymously😅

When I was working at the cannabis store I experienced it from the other side of the till, post of my job was ringing up the deal once the customers stuff was decided on & picked. Never had an issue with it personally.

I think it's more likely they just work at a soul crushing, boring job. Standing in one spot doing repetitive tasks all day. Customer service is the worst 😂

*part of my job

I know my 2 customers who take their transaction receipts and invoices unstapled . I don’t take receipts for groceries all the time, a quick “I am good” is all it takes. That being said Yodl if you get a good cashier they will stop offering you the paper one day. Your memorable just not part of the process

I might just give off ahole vibes. Tbcontinued

Smile and say no thank you

It isn't that because I don't have this problem.

Decided ill keep my theories to myself for time being. I might be a bit off as i was busy and hadn't eaten...well just a yogurt this morning. More to follow though, this isn't over

Yodl holding out 😤

They get weirder. Maybe next time I'm on empty stomach I'll indulge

I don’t care about the receipt but nobody knows how to bag groceries properly anymore.

decline across the spectrum

😂

It has been going on for years

This lmao

The only kind I have 😂

Someone put the eggs at the bottom of my bag once i was so mad reorganizing all the groceries. It just made me want to always do self checkout. These same people will cry about AI taking their jobs later

😂

eggs and avocados on the bottom, gfy.

Akkktually, I was told by a pro bagger that eggs on bottom is correct and not risky. Yes, there are literally annual bagging competitions ranking speed and efficiency for bagging.

Ok, I looked it up and there's debate on eggs. There really is a bagging competition though:

The National Grocers Association (NGA) Best Bagger Championship is an annual competition that tests grocery baggers on speed, technique, and style. Contestants bag identical orders of up to 40 common items using reusable bags. Judging is based on a point system, with 10 points possible for speed and 10 for bag building technique

I didn’t need to know this existed

🤣

Does it say soft fruit next to the eggs on the bottom

I guess carton type might have significance

A real pro bagger puts the eggs in its own bag

Just noticed the gif now lol. Need to use this when I see nostr introductions next time

So far I like Linux

...so far 😈

You like your "distro" lol. We all like Linux, we just don't like wtf is on top of it that gives us control over Linux.

I don’t understand what this means 😂

Distro is short for distribution, which just means the flavor of Linux (eg mint, Ubuntu, pop, etc). Linux itself is I suppose everywhere...might be his point in the last statement. I admittedly may be missing something, but not expecting the elusive Chip to reply anytime soon

Yeah this! Linux is just the Operating System aka Kernel. Your distribution is the "User land" aka "User space" etc. So your distro is who packages bootstrappers, firmware, system applications like systemd, and regular user applications like bash, cd, ln, tar etc. Then you have your Desktop environments like Gnome, XFCE, and KDE for example. Under them are usually some terminal server like XServer or Wayland.

The Linux kernel is almost useless by itself, there's nothing it can really do without a bootstrap and an init process. Then something like bash can be started, connected to the terminal, and allow users to do things.

Your distro just packs it all up into a bootable, and actually usable system with tools you usually want to use.

I feel smarter and more competent already!

This is why Debian and Arch are so great if you dare. Probably the most promoted barebones options.

Its called nostr lol

I specifically said private

Private relay bud

I always thought I was a tech guy until I joined nostr. Can't keep up with the nips sorry.

Devs coding the hot new Nostr app.

I'm ready to contribute #v4v

Naan for naan? nostr:npub10mtatsat7ph6rsq0w8u8npt8d86x4jfr2nqjnvld2439q6f8ugqq0x27hf

Damn I gotta hunger for butter chicken now 😭

It's party time

Those guy's sing my favorite Christmas Carol 🤩

We need the full version

Added to my collection of songs to get me kicked off Christmas DJ duty 🎯

Now we just need a David Guetta remix

I really wish they had a video and not just this cartoon on a Thomas Kinkade background.

If they posted on nostr we could’ve zapped for a video 😂

I do love naan 👀

Naan season

The only app that will journal back... https://myreflekt.net/

AI is in my journal now too? Sheesh

Many recommended this. Will check it out 🫡

It’s the best note taking app.

NotesNook

Never tried that one

A better note taking app than Obsidian IMHO. End-to-end encryption. Free real-time sync across devices and platforms. Fully offline/local capable.

I saw there’s native apps on pretty much all platforms. Do you use them or you’re mostly on the web app?

I use local apps and built-in sync. Had no issues for 6+ years. The Monograph feature is incredibly useful too.

Just installed it on iPhone. Added a new note. Then I installed on graphene. Added 3 notes. Afterwards installed on Mac OS. Imported my obsidian vault. Then created an account. Signed in on all devices. Instant sync. So far so good. I’ll keep testing. See which one I prefer

I struggle to keep Obsidian basic enough - leveraging how nostr:nprofile1qyt8wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyd968gmewwp6kytcqyqd6dt7msdc6nw9p40sagq6kftw5xh4y8auq7y3mzn9f54dtf2q9k0v3xw4 uses it. I find NoteNook to be less powerful, but easier to handle. I bounce between the two. For iOS I use Auer Jot app my good friend wrote - super minimal but an excellent note taking app >> https://auerjot.com/

That app connects to notesnook or obsidian. I like the level of complexity of notesnook. I don’t use 95% of what’s available in obsidian

Same. I especially like that Notesnook is end-to-end encrypted whereas Obsidian is plain text (markdown) files. Knowing that I use them accordingly. I don't pay for Obsidian sync (or iCloud) so have not used it via iOS yet.

You don’t need obsidian sync on iOS. Just put your obsidian vault in a folder on iCloud. Point all your obsidian apps to that folder and you’re set.

I like the encrypted aspect. Not self hosted. I saw self hosting is alpha right now.

guess I have to use iCloud after all - will be a fun distraction for the morning. I went down a deep Templater plugin hole yesterday while trying to simplify my Obsidian vault! At least now I have a clean custom template every time I create a new note!

What type of customization do you get with that plugin? I’m having trouble vizualizing what sort of template you can do? Like bullet lists? Or automatic link to another note? Stuff like that?

Templater is incredibly powerful - too much so. I use the folder auto template function mostly along with the standard properties function. This allows me to create a note template ("Basic") that has the layout and properties I want for every note that gets created by default notes folder. One of the properties is to apply the date the note was created automagically.

Ah so you add the metadata directly in the note. Interesting

SpiderOak One might be an appealing option for sync over apex cloud vendors.

What is spider oak?

End-to-end encrypted sync. You can use it like Dropbox or iCloud. I've used it for a few years. They have gone through some changes since this article, but it looks like they have settled. I haven't used them recently because of the cost. They are famous for a Snowden endorsement:

https://siliconprairienews.com/2014/08/snowden-endorsed-spideroak-doesn-t-want-the-key-to-your-private-info/

I see “contact for pricing” on the website. Sounds expensive 👀

Looks cool!

$6/mo. for 150GB storage, which for stuff like the OP is fine. At least when I had it, they were very precise as far as security concerns. It is the only service I've ever had where if you delete it, it is gone, without annoying follow-ups. You disappear. Their 2TB isn't that much more than Google One. My only concern is the health after their split. It looks like 2 years ago they hit a rough patch. That was after my time with them. My experience with their GNU/Linux client was good, which is another rarity.

https://crossclave.com/one/

Interesting. What do you mean by health after their split? The company split up?

If you go to spideroak (com), it has a different focus. There is a link to crossclave (com) for the download of One. Both sites also reference refactoring. Crossclave has working like moving products to on-prem, etc. Is One orphaned? Are the suits selling out to the money machine of the day and sacrificing the original product? I don't know. All of this happened since I used it. While I was trying to figure this out, I found somebody on Reddit who was leaving SpiderOak One and referenced this list:

https://comparisontabl.es/cloud-storage/

It is a familiar story. For some reason companies can't just stick with what they do well. You would think that a Snowden certification on the product would get you a rock solid brand. That was why I originally got it.

and Open Source! Also this from same developer > https://monogr.ph/

Standard Notes

Subtle branding.

I use that for other notes but don’t really like it for journaling. Plus my computer doesn’t recognize it like a regular app so I can’t pin it to panel. Idk why.

Logseq is great for journaling. You can sync it via syncthing or any other service.

The key seems to be setting up syncthing lol
