Christmas rant: Modern Lego sets are retarded and completely destroy the point of Lego in the first place.
Lego is the original Minecraft, an endless expanse of creation and imagination.
These sets turn it into 3D puzzles.

Relax dude. We've built all kinds of things out of the orginal sets. My son and I built a movie theater, spaceships, all kinds of vehicles and even a little harry potter village with multiple made-up buildings. The sets have cool custom blocks that can be used in interesting ways for your own stuff. We even used them for a couple of stop motion videos.

I swear I remember my father saying the same thing in the 80's š When I was getting the space sets for Christmas. In the 60s they were just packs of blocks. Time truly is a flat circle. ā¾ļø

My son and I build a set the first time, and then I intentionally set it into our tub of hodge podge pieces, so that it gets bastardized into some wild and awesome creation.
We also go to garage sales and flea markets and buy bulk pieces so we can get more stuff like different size wheels.
Pretty sure this is a high level overview of the Lego movie. Become a master builder rather than another ārule follower.ā
You can buy whatever Lego pieces you want. No one is making you buy the sets that are ā3d puzzlesā. Both are fun.
This has been bugging me for years! And I had not quite put my finger on it. I am sure the 3D puzzles are fun. But something I make oput of my imagination is like a statue... a Piece of art! The puzzle is like IKEA furniture you can't sit on.

Whatās so different other than being more elaborate and detailed now? I agree all the co-branding is kinda lame and causes a premium. I remember some of my childhood sets in the 80s had instructions too and weād always build the set first and admire it for a few days, and then destroy it and build something else. Exactly what I do with my kids now

now you have mostly expensive kits with very specific "bricks".
you buy the kit, build it (involving zero fantasy) and never destroy it because it costed a lot and the "bricks" it is made of are very specific and less reusable for other constructions
Iām 50. There were kits when I was a kid. Not sure what youāre going for with your last sentence but you can tell me what we do all you want and it wonāt change what we actually do. And if you think the specialty bricks arenāt helpful for building new ideas then you might have an imagination problem.

Can relate. Had a 4k set of a building this year. It's definitely a 3D puzzle, which is cool, but yeah, it's paint by numbers completely

We build the Lego Death Star one Christmas. The book was so huge you could hardly use it. Remember thinking the same, nothing beats a big Tupperware of random Legoās for building flying-cowboy-car-castle-submarine

You clearly haven't enough children in your life to know that Lego hits the sweet spot for the kid who enjoys the 3D puzzle just as much as the kid who builds space laser dinosaur spaceships out of the original 3D puzzle pieces. The Lego Movie gets that aspect of playing with Lego just right.
It is SO COOL seeing what kids build. Like, OH, I love that TOO!
I blame the brick gluers! It's got these kids treating LEGOs rougher than ever.

Lego needs to release a line of ābase kitsā with basic blocks and a few specialized pieces , no instructions included
The idea being to provide a foundation level of blocks that your imagination can run wild with. This isnāt possible today unless you visit a legoland store which are few and far between.
That's sad, every kid needs a base kit.

My mom found a couple Ziploc bags of just different size wheel bricks at a garage sell. Best day ever, no fighting for a week amoungst us 4 boys...until we adjusted to the wheel inflation. God bless the mom who sorted out her kids wheels for that garage sell. Never understood why they've gone to almost every brick as custom for precosevwd designs...your right, might as well buy a model airplane kit.
Incorrect. Legos have two modes. You only get stuck in the default mode if youāre not ready for the freedom mode.

If that's what you want, don't buy boxes at toy stores. Go to the Lego stores directly. 
Man, I couldnāt agree more. I hate following the models. I want and I want my kids to build their own. As it turns out, they mix and match the sets and do what we used to do anyway!!!!!!
