Anybody here do cold plunges?
Ever since trying it in Norway I’ve gonna partially down the rabbit hole of saunas and cold plunges.

Cold showers
I did that too.
Not the same. Temperature can’t compare to a cold plunge at 33°
True. It's not comparable, but there are still health benefits. Highly recommend for those who live in apartments and can't afford/fit their own tub.
Yes! Going today 🤝
Yes, they are amazing. I don’t do them regularly. But when I do I feel a lot better for a few days. Helps with chronic pain from old injuries.
I do sauna/cold plunge (14c) once a week. my skin is a lot brighter for 40yr guy. Love it so far
Been dabbling in the sauna // cold plunge combo. It a treat.
YES #YESTR LET'S FUCKING GOOOO
Finishing all showers cold has become a part of my routine that I can’t skip. It has even surpassed coffee.
Likewise, Mr Clown. Learned that tip reading James Bond
Cold showers.
Looking back, I was doing cold plunges every morning as a kid at swim practice. Pool was right next to Lake Erie and at the end of practice we would have blue lips and be shivering.
nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a if you haven’t already, check out the Huberman lab episodes on both hot and cold therapies. Great deep dives into the research on the subject as well as the talking through all the benefits
Go easy.
1. Have a hot shower like normal, lather, then rinse with cold water for 30 seconds.
Do this for 3 or 4 consecutive days, when you are not washing your hair.
2. When you’re ready for the next step, start with a cold shower and EASE INTO IT, to begin. Turn the water on to as cold as you can reasonably tolerate. It should be uncomfortable but not unsafe. Stand in the shower, it directly under the stream and bring water to your arms and legs with cupped hands. Next, splash water onto your face, then chest.
Now, you’re ready to go under… remember to breathe!
Stand under the stream for 1 minute, letting the water hit your head, face, shoulders and back.
After this is done, you can turn the hot water on if you need to do your hair.
When I lived near a river I would do an evening plunge throughout the winter. If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out the Wim Hof method.
I feel that cold plunging becomes a high maintenance hobby especially if you get a cold plunger for at home use. I could take them or leave them. Plus if you have running water or live somewhere cold, just take cold showers and embrace wearing only a hoodie and pants in the winter. You’ll get plenty of cold in a cheaper, more organic way without having another hobby to maintain.
Retraining the nervous system to not trigger when immersed in extreme cold has been a game changer for me. Amongst other benefits, my meditations go much deeper quicker now. 🧘♂️
I did on and off for a few months at a time.
Cold plunge is fun, honestly couldn't tell if there are any real benefits from my own experience
Yeah, for sure! Firm element of the Wim Hof Method ❄️💪
Cold plunges are the best part of the sauna experience. The feeling on the skin when you get out of the water is simply fantastic.
Sauna at night helps my sleep tremendously!
6 times a week
cold plunge
15min sauna
cold plunge
20min steam room
cold plunge
amazing benefits
They are electric
I don’t have access to a cold plunge, but a cold shower is the next best thing. I have been a sauna advocate for years, it’s a perfect post workout activity. Only need about 15 minutes to reap the proposed benefits from heat shock proteins, if there are any. Regardless, the way it makes me feel is enough to keep it up 😁
I do. I use edge tub. Has been super beneficial. I find cold makes me feel better than sauna. I’ve tried both. I started with cold showers for about a year, and once I was hooked, I moved into cold plunges. I do them about 4x per week, 10-12 minutes at 42 degree water. I also still do cold showers. There’s some nuance to find what works for you - but I find I don’t get sick, I have more energy and mental clarity.
I built a natural swimming pool in my garden and dip every morning (‘til about November).
One of my main life regrets is not discovering cold plunges in my 20s or 30s. The calm that overtakes you once you’re immersed in icy water beats any drug I’ve ever encountered. And I’m convinced that cold plunges are as good for you as exercise, without inflicting any pounding and wear-and-tear.
I’m off to Finland in a couple weeks for a day of no-B.S. saunas!
We have a cold plunge sauna here in Vancouver that takes Bitcoin! They only open in winter, though
When I can! They are amazing paired with the Sauna. Heading back to Norway here soon for some more research up north 😏
Fan of Banyas in NY area, most have cold plunge tub. Check out Marlboro Banya in NJ.
I like Dr. Rhonda Patrick on sauna. https://www.foundmyfitness.com/topics/sauna
Also check out Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. Fun watch.
Wow happy to hear that. Im norwegian and take the cold shower every morning. Always makes me wake up, and most of the time brings a good mood and laughter aswell.
I do it every Saturday morning with a local group. Love it.
wut the fuck does "i've gonna partially down the rabbit hole" mean?
see - when u too wordy, them words just fuck each other up
I’ve done Irish showers (start cold, end hot) for the last 7 years. That voluntary step into cold water blasting my face is the hardest thing I do every morning but swallowing that toad is my way of starting the day with a W.
But this year I bought an Ice Pod and started doing ice plunges. Started at 35 degrees Fahrenheit and gradually moved down. Found my limit after literally breaking the ice one morning and ice plunging in 32 (0 C) water for 90 seconds.
Listen: My body was on absolute FIRE afterwards (one of the best feelings EVER) for a good 5 minutes but my fingers were numb for 12 hours.
So, everything in moderation (including moderation) but I’m still convinced heat/cold therapy is one of the best protocols for cardiovascular health and longevity.

Yes Lyn
I do. I usually go every weekend between November and March, and I miss it for the rest of the year (daily cold showers must suffice). It's addictive. 😀
no. I don't mind cold water, but I can't stand the sauna.
Outside hot is amazing, but being locked in a hot room with no airflow is torture for me.
Yes. Sauna every day. and in the winter we'll make a hole in the ice for swimming.
Not cold plunges yet, but I started showering as cold s possible after a nice warm one. And I gotta say it‘s fascinating how much you A) get used to it and B) are really looking forward to it. In the meanwhile the colder water up in the mountains is almost my primary reason to go there :-).
I take hot showers, it's like a cold plunge but the opposite
Oh yeah, spa to the pool during cold months. It’s pretty amazing what the body can adapt to over time. I used to challenge my kids to see who could stand waist deep in the pool the longest.. In the middle of the winter! They still can’t beat my times even though they are grown now. I have a lot more body mass :-)
Plus it makes one a total badass. Next time you have an important negotiation invite everyone to have discussions while neck deep in 50F water.
Look up “Wim Hof” the guy was pretty hard core and genuine back in the day. Just a crazy yogi doing mind over matter stuff. Not sure if “the Wim Hof Method” is still genuine or super commercialized.
I did something similar once with a cryo tube thing almost naked coldest I've ever been
I sooo wanna…
I don't nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a, but I do swim in the ocean year round, which I started with a good buddy during COVID. The water where I live isn't the coldest, but does get chilly in winter and spring and is super clean. The combo of natural sea water and lower temps is an awesome effect, makes you feel so alive, highly recommend!🙌
try blue blocker. make your sleep better
Yes. Wish we were setup to do it more regularly.
Such a great experience.
We mix it with basic Whim Hoff breath work.
Goes really well.
Yes, they are excellent. And even better when combined with breathing techniques/mindfulness.
Been doing it for a year and a half, with 10 min breathing exercises before the plunge. Has improved my life significantly
How?
How has it improved?
I’m just in a very calm yet energetic state until about early afternoon everyday, I work out harder after a plunge every morning, and I sleep hard/a little longer than I used to.
I’ve never experienced a feeling of being mentally/emotionally calm to the point that nothing can really bother you yet so energized/motivated to get things done until I started plunging
Cold plunges- the sending of BTC to a hardware wallet without confirming the outbound address.
I got so used to my wallet i dont really verify anymore. I really should lol
Yea, regularly. Aside from feeling incredible, they've been really really beneficial for me.
What temperature does the water have to be for a cold plunge? I go for a dip in the pool, which considering it’s winter here it’s cold… but Australia really isn’t that cold 🤣
Did it frequently when it was readily available at the gym. Highly recommend it, you feel like a new person.
I have to settle for a cold shower after a 20-minute sauna at the gym.
I hear an actual ice plunge after the sauna can be very beneficial.
It doesn't even need to be ice. Just cold water. It's amazing.
Yes! Love them so much we installed an almost heaven sauna in the basement of our cabin. Also got a 100 gallon agricultural feeding tank from tractor supply to use as an ice bath.
Yes I do it regularly when in London.
At first it is overwhelming and I gasp for breath and then, after a while I build a resistence to the cold.
I am sure that it is good for me both physically and psychologically.
The winter there really doesn't feel that cold as a result.
It seems there's strong support for cold plunges on Nostr.
If you haven't tried it, look through some of the comments in the thread below.

Sauna and cold plunges are super healthy and relaxing. Short cut to mindfulness too
Yes, I have both. Tips to get the most out of your sessions….
1. Always follow the sauna with the cold plunge.
2. Not much benefit after 3 mins in the cold plunge.
3. Make sure your magnesium and electrolytes are at adequate levels, otherwise these therapies may have a negative effect.
Big on sauna. Not so much cold plunge
I love cold plunges
Love both - Finnish saunas and cold plunges. Try to do each at least once a week.
Yesss! Sauna and then a swim in the ocean pool in winter is my favourite combo. Mind becomes clear and muscles relaxed.

Yes my wife and I enjoy these in the cold season. Refer to the book "Outlive" for a review of sauna research. If memory serves, a 20-min sauna at 165 F several times a week produces markedly improved longevity. But as you know, grip strength is one of the best indicators of longevity. The book lists numerous beneficial practices and tests. But yeah cold plunges and sauna are great. Oh I forgot to mention, it appears research is showing the majority benefit of cold can be achieved at temp of 65F. So you may not need the ice after all. 65 can feel pretty good after being in it for about 30 seconds.
