I know explaining this to you is probably a waste of time, but when the paper abstract says it is a linear model of aircraft flight based on a flat, nonrotating Earth, that does not in any way mean that the authors believe that the actual Earth has those properties. Those are mathematical simplifications to reduce the complexity of the model, which approximate the local conditions that the simulated aircraft is flying in well enough.
All models are approximations of reality. Those particular properties of reality which are not relevant to the object of study can be neglected. As another example, a scientific paper might create a model of a liquid flowing around a perfectly cylindrical object. Of course there is no such thing as "perfectly" cylindrical when you zoom into something at the microscopic or atomic level, as it will have imperfections, and not be perfectly smooth. Those imperfections are small enough to not be modeled and have a negligible impact on the macroscopic behavior of the fluid flow.

Expanding one's mind to ideas (as far fetched as they may seem) is a great exercise in thinking differently. That isn't to say that the earth is flat or not but it does allow for expanding concepts. You've found Bitcoin. To many, the idea of a digital monetary instrument is preposterous, yet you've grasped the meaning.
Don't be threatened by "flat earthers" they won't change your daily routine. They won't make planes fall out of the sky. The sun will still rise and set and seasons will still change. What they may do however, is open a doorway to finding truth. If one doesn't question and explore for answers then we simply accept what we've been *told*. In my opinion that's far more dangerous than pondering a disc with a firmament.

Don't consider myself a "flat earther" but it is curious how everything that my senses can perceive lends to a motionless plane where water always finds its level

Daytime in Mexico is a psyop. Nighttime only happens in Japan periodically when there's a lot of smog.
The sun and moon are the same size and very close to us, so as they follow their circular track, different parts of the earth are lit/dark, creating timezones
This is also why when you go way up north, the sun is out nearly 24hrs a day, and never sets in some places

Iโm still stumped by star trails in the southern โhemisphere.โ My understanding is that while different constellations, they rotate in the same manner as in the north.
I once saw a video where they had a clear, domed paperweight on top of a flat earth map and it demonstrated how the reflections of stars around the outer edges would give the impression of rotation but I canโt find it now.
OK, but then in winter it's dark all the time. So the moon-sun symmetrical orbits in the video shift...?

This is so wrong in so many ways. 1. The sun is out 24 h in the north only during the summer. This model doesn't explain 24h of darkness in winter. 2. The system doesn't explain the reverse effects for the south. 3. The moon can be visible during the day.
Flat earth is a model that I believe to be derived from the Christian cosmology. I don't concern myself much with the materialist worldview that is without a centre to orient but in phenomenology, meaning as the human experiences the universe, the world is experienced much as s dome around his consciousness. That results in something below, the earth which is experienced as a flat plane and the dome of the sky. In Christian language "earth" means all physical things including flesh and stars, while "heaven" includes concepts, ideals and principles etc.
So once one discerns the two worldviews, the "round earth" of modern day science and the "flat earth" of ancient cosmology do not contradict but instead work from different anchor points and explain different aspects of being.
Timezones are a huge problem for the globe model.
