I don't like all the depressing conversations going around right now about nostr's future. Yes, we should market, and we have to do better, but this is a ten year project, don't get too worked up about it failing already.

I've been active on Nostr for about two weeks now, and I see lots of people fretting about adoption and the future of the ecosystem. Let's stop navel-gazing so much and start having fun and creating cool online communities.
if you want Nostr to have a chance you have to decouple it from Bitcoin. as long as Nostr is "Bitcoin Social" nobody will use it.
would you join Ethereum Social ? how about Fiat Social ? then why do you expect anybody to join Bitcoin Social ?

That's a logical fallacy. In this fiat world, we don't really have division of labor. The massive fiat plunder is basically bringing us back to the stone age. You could divide the world right now between people that have a lot of different non-specialized skills (I.e. cavemen) and the people that are basically spoiled brats (i.e. the lemmings). Putting the argument that Nostr doesn't work because it doesn't have diversity is nonsense because we didn't even have true diversity as a civilization.

This is what ive been saying, but we're just the early adopter freaks. Will need a few influencers to make it not abouy bitcoin and allow users to denominate sats to dollars on their clients.
But the fact is that there is no forced coupling at the protocol level, if ethereum wants or Fiat companies want they can easily integrate into nostr.

Part of it is just that there are competing visions for what Nostr can/should be. And you have to make your opinion about pros and cons known if you want to persuade others.
Nobody is negative or argues about that sort of thing in Bluesky because (1) there is only one team in charge of the protocol and (2) everyone already knows what it is and what the roadmap is.

How is Nostr failing? Have any notes been taken down? Has someone been unable to create their own keys? Unable to post notes, comments, zaps? No, Nostr is purring like a purple kitten about to enter the chicken coop.
The community has accomplished so much in such a short period of time. I’m not sure why people can’t see that at this point. I guess it’s natural to compare oneself to the outside to gauge success, but I don’t think it paints an accurate picture of what nostr has become. Slow, deliberate, and thoughtful growth goes against the western idea of storm the gates, conquer, control and monopolize, but maybe this is the model nostr needs to follow.

All I saw was bluesky growing, nostr not as fast. And people talking about marketing.
So far, from what I've heard, most people are pleasantly surprised with Nostr, so it seems it's just a matter of getting the word out. Marketing can help. Marketing doesn't mean not building. You can build and market at the same time.
Comparisons to bluesky are so shortsighted!
When Meta/X announce their next new innovation bluesky will be left in the dust. It is incredibly narrow and has no depth. Nostr is a replacement and an advancement all in one.
Like you said it is just going to take time to build - build the tech, build the community, and build confidence.
Maybe freedom tech will always be behind because most people don’t care about being free and just want to be a part of the largest group.
Nostr bootstraps off Bitcoin which got wings in the last two years with the maturation of Lightning. It's not going to "beat" the silos but it's big enough that it doesn't matter. We have our cyberspace back now.
Reposition it from freedom tech to ultimate network effects tech.

This is most likely the correct answer. We're humans. Humans have an inherent need to be social. Most gravitate to where the largest groups of other humans are located.
I agree, but it also feels like thinking AOL will win just because they have the most people. Keep in mind a lot of people did think AOL would win!
Safety instinct is very strong. It's for the safety of the whole species that "many" will not take any risk lest the existing order go to hell altogether. A "few" will take all the risks on behalf of the whole species. Change instinct among these few is very strong. I think these two sides, along with some others on the spectrum, make the "whole" of human nature. Life is not binary. This is the way nature keeps balance.
It's the all out indoctrination engineering (propaganda, advertising, public relations, so-called culture, schools, organized religions etc) of the Establishment that the defensive safety instinct gets momentum. That is, the change instinct is also about safety but this one is offensive safety mechanism. And to counter the indoctrination engineering, we need mass education creating an awareness of freedom, but I remember "propaganda by deed" examples of the 19th century anarchists. Everybody knows action speaks louder than the words.
The electronic frontiers of #Bitcoin and #Nostr are indeed pushing the boundaries of freedom. They are the freedom living people. Freedom is their passion, innate nature. The "many" will follow them once the frontlines feels safe.

Some people expect way too much. Nostr is complicated and we need to accept the fact that normies will never have any interest in it. We just need to convert more normies into non-normies. haha.

Nostr has had times of flat growth in the past. And we continue to see tremendous creativity in new apps. I think we’ll figure it out.

Most of the people fleeing #Twitter seem to be choosing decentralized alternatives such as Nostr or the Fediverse, or #BlueSky which isn't decentralized yet, but promises to become decentralized in a later iteration. We may seem to be in a death match against other decentralized networks, but every user that replaces a corporate centralized network with a decentralized network strengthens the whole sector. #DecentraLife is always preferable to #CorpoCentric life.
If trends continue, each of these networks will grow some form of interoperability with the others. The mostr.pub bridge is just a beginning. And in the meantime, people keep building. New clients, new ways to present Nostr (like #Reddit, like #Instagram, etc).
Recently, #Minds, which already has its own #Nostr relay, added #Fediverse capability. Once again, we see the two growing together. The future is bright.
