I've been experimenting with short (30-ish hour) dry fasts. I've water fasted in the past, and this is definitely different. No hunger, no weird electrolyte imbalance issues, but way lower energy! It's like everything's normal - I feel totally fine - but I'm running at something like 75% capacity.

The day after each dry fast, my energy and mood are insane. As in, randomly dancing around while talking with my husband because it's just too hard to stand still. I think this continues for a few days but the first day is most pronounced.

Autophagy on dry fasting is supposed to be amazing. I don't have anything in particular to heal but I like the idea of it as a consistent health protocol.

Anyone with fasting experience care to share?

Fasting without drinking water? I could never.

Very cool 🥳

I prefer dry fasts to water fasts especially for longer duration.

You get into ketosis super quick and don't have the episodes of hunger in the first 2 days like with water fasting.

As far as I know, that's because your body will actually burn fat sooner to make its own water that way, like a camel 😇👍

Dry fasting is supposed to be 3x stronger than water fasting for healing, but beside general inflammation and well-being I had no issues to heal, so I can't really confirm that.

I use to do long water fasts up to 21 days, but then switched to dry fasting and liked it a lot more.

My longest dry fast was 5 days 😁

I normally experience lower energy around the second day of the dry fast and at day 4 or 5.

Currently, I'm dry fasting no more than 3 days, since that is supposed to activate all the good things and longer isn't necessary.

Often times I will also just skip a meal, which automatically is a 47h fast because I only eat once a day.

I mostly don't know if I'm going to do it just until before the meal, so on those days I do water fasts 😅

To help yourself get into ketosis faster you could try eating low or no carb meals the days leading up to the fast, with some moderate exercise like walking out jogging to burn off the rest of your carbs 👍

Thank you so much! I still haven't switched wallets since Alby discontinued its earlier version, or I would zap you (I have a lot of folks that I've been wanting to zap, but I especially appreciate such a thorough response and explanation).

This is very interesting. I love the idea that 3 days of dry fasting is enough to activate all the good things 🙂. I was planning on trying one of those when our weather cools down a bit.

I'm definitely not yet at the stage that I can decide to fast intuitively but that sounds very cool.

Even though you had no issues to heal, did you notice benefits? I was pleased by my energy and mood surge after, and I like to think that the fasting was a mini system-wide clean up and the surge was an indication of that.

I tend toward lower carb anyway (carnivore but with some dairy and fruit, basically) so skipping the fruit a day or two before seems like a good idea.

Thanks again 🙏

Fasting in general is so good for the body ♥️

It gives it time to clean up all the old cells and repair them.

I did a lot of research into fasting about 3 years ago, and I can't remember everything 😅

Your body will adapt to fasting the more you do it and you will enter ketosis quicker as well 🎉

So don't give up, try it a few more times and see if the energy deficit gets better 👍

Healing:

I used to have lower back problems about once or twice a year, which my doctor told me are inflamed nerves that just sometimes "snap" and start sending pain signals until they recover...

These use to last 4-5 days and make moving and sitting very painful 😣

After I read about sugar causing inflammation, and how fasting reduces it and repairs cells, I had to try it 😄

In the last 3 years I tried to be as keto/carnivore as possible, but I do fall off the wagon a lot because of travel or family events 🫣

As soon as I feel a little discomfort in my back, I'm doing a 3 day fast, mostly dry or 2 day dry + 1 day water fast at the end of I get thirsty.

Haven't spent 5 days in bed since 🥳

I also do 23h water fasts basically every day with my OMAD schedule, which should trigger autophagy after about 16h if the meal was sufficiently low in carbs.

In general I feel great and it's so simple if you just have to cook once in the evening.

Steak, eggs and butter mostly 🫡

Sounds amazing! I would love to do OMAD and actually tried that for a while, but I definitely have a jump in cortisol with that schedule that I'm not sure is great for me, and it's hard for me to eat enough at one sitting. I think women have to be a bit more careful about that messing with our hormones, and in any case I probably will get more return from moving more in the carnivore direction (generally, the more carnivore I am, the better I feel).

Very good to hear about your back healing and that I can expect it to get easier!

Thanks, I was very convinced by fasting after that 😅

Oh yeah, hormones might be a thing to look out for 🤔

Animal fat is very important for hormone production, so getting enough of that is important

You could try eating windows that get smaller over time.

Like 18:6 or 20:4 maybe 😇

Good Luck 🍀

Interesting, didnt know dry fast was a thing.

Need other water personally. Find it hard to go longer than a day without it but ad it's been good!

Ooofff that seems pretty rough. Do you exercise at during your dry fast or do anything where you sweat a fair bit ?

I keep to my usual chores on our land (which involves a fair bit of walking and lifting) but avoid anything too strenuous. Many dry fasters regularly do 3 or 5 day dry fasts (see the other replies on this thread) but I'm not ready for those yet!

I do regular 5 day dry fasts and they are much easier than water fasts. Contrary to conventional opinion, you don't die on day 3 😃

The energy on refeeding days is awesome, but the state of mind that you get into during the fast is also very interesting. My hypothesis is that it might be due to vasopressin interacting with oxytocin receptors coupled with elevated dopamine. A paper for the nerds (on hormonal responses to prolonged dry fasting): https://karger.com/cmr/article/27/4/242/67781/Dry-Fasting-Physiology-Responses-to-Hypovolemia

How would you describe your state of mind during the fasts?

And have you come across any sleep suggestions? (after just one day of dry fasting, my sleep is terrible!)

First of all, very calm and more introspective. But I also have a more loving disposition towards others and I'm less irritable, typically starting on day 3. Regarding sleep, I don't have any good suggestions - my sleep always gets shorter and more shallow during the fast. If you have the luxury of a flexible schedule, it is best to simply get up whenever you wake up naturally and then sleep during the day, whenever you feel tired.

Yes, very much agree with that 🫡
