Don't forget to re-setup your relays after the update to v0.87+.

You should choose:

- Home Relays to store all your content. nostr.wine and relay.tools are good paid options. You can also use free relays: nostr.mom , nos.lol , etc

- Relays to store all zaps, likes and replies to your content. They might be the same as home relays if those home relays do not require payment to post. Nostr.wine would not be a good option here.

- Relays to use for DMs: Here you want a relay that anyone can post to but only you can download your messages. inbox.nostr.wine is a good option. Advanced settings on relay.tools personal relays can also store your DMs.

- Private Relays are for things no one should see, like your Drafts. There are no dedicated relays for this category yet, so I would use a local relay like Citrine.

- Search relays: hit the Default button to use all available options.

- Local relays: use Citrine.

- General relays. Delete those that you moved to their specific sections. Keep everything that can help find events from your follow list.

No, they all assume persistent relays. Thought I don't think that matters at this point.

I'm asking because I don't see a point in running a relay on my phone when I already have a personal relay in my private network. The non persistent caching relay would make things a little different and probably a little faster, but it is most likely not worth any extra effort. Thank you for your answer. 👍

I haven't touched relays in a long time, would you recommend deleting everything and keeping/adding those recommended? Should one be purging relays like one purges follows from time to time?

No, keep the list as is, just move them up. We still haven't migrated everything to gossip, so it makes sense to keep them there in case the new code is wrong or fails.

Okay, I've officially been left behind. I'm having trouble with the basics of the relay types and what exactly they're doing. It's probably safe to say that any new person has zero chance of setting any of this properly. It also looks like there aren't any free options for some things like inbox.

Where can I do some reading on this? Shit got real on relays like...overnight.😂

Humm.. it was probably only saved in one of the relays you disabled. See if adding some of them back to General brings the back. We still haven't moved the list parts into the gossip model :(

Not at first use, but if you don't understand it, you are going to be a slave of the app just like on Twitter. If you don't set your account correctly, Nostr can't protect you. Freedom is not cheap.

Our job is to design screens so that people can understand it and set things up easily.

There were many freedom platforms since the beginning of the Internet. FreeNET was one of them, uncensorable discussions and files. But it was so user unfriendly that it didn't get any real traction beyond niche core community. Today nobody even remembers them. Don't make the same mistakes they did.

You have a lightning account from zbd. People are sending bitcoins to you over there.

The relay part depends on which screen you are. Selecting good relays to use is important for your own freedom.

Whats the benefit of using a dm relay. I assume my dms are on every relay so why would I want to use a relay that only I can download from? I cant visualize the benefit even though Im sure there is one.

Decentralization and Privacy. DMs should just stay on the user's relay as opposed to be sent everywhere.

You can opt to have public relays there, which is essentially the same as having them everywhere, but the default should be to setup your own receivers to minimize what people can track from your messages.

No, this is the new DM (NIP-17). Many clients already code it with custom relay settings. The relay list is also a nostr event, so it is stored in the relays them selves.

I knew about relay list, but their purpose? It's kind of easy to doxx yourself just by setting a personal relay. Or inbox.

That's why I challenge the privacy part of this.

Well, that's why we recommend the DM inbox relay to be closed to the user's posts, like inbox.nostr.wine. In their case, anyone can send a message to you, but only you can see and download them.
