Hey new Nostr users that have jumped on Nostr thanks to nostr:npub1xr7t5h0l25ej73pm04zgz9afeexyzsjx67s5v0xxf2sshjn4sx6sep2gqh, I'd like to take a moment and blow your mind and show you the power of Nostr. You're probably using Damus or Primal right now. I want you to go and download an app called nostr:npub1yfg0d955c2jrj2080ew7pa4xrtj7x7s7umt28wh0zurwmxgpyj9shwv6vg or nostr:npub1v5ufyh4lkeslgxxcclg8f0hzazhaw7rsrhvfquxzm2fk64c72hps45n0v5 . You can get either of these on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. They're essentially Spotify but for Nostr. Once you have either one downloaded, you're going to want to "sign in" to this app with your private key or secret key from your Damus or your Primal. This is the long ugly looking string of characters that starts with NSEC. This is like your super secret password that you can never change, so you do want to keep it save and never share it. This key unlocks your identity. Now that you're signed into these apps, you can now comment on songs, boost them, share them, etc. and you'll see that activity in your Damus or Primal. Why? Because it's the same ecosystem and all of these apps work together. How fucking cool is that?

About 10 minutes into Nostr after watching Ian’s video about the site. I like what I see, thanks for the recommendation!
Nostr is a HUGE rabbit hole if you like those 🤣 Enjoy and welcome.
WELCOMEEEE
Ross I was having trouble with getting my NSEC to take on nostr:nprofile1qqsx2wyjt6lmvc05rrvv05r5hm3w3t7h0pcpmkyswrpd4ymd2u09tscpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3kamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu339e682mnwv4k8xct5wvhxxmmdqywhwumn8ghj7mn0wd68yttsw43zuam9d3kx7unyv4ezumn9wscn3xgh !!! I've never had issues until today
This experience this evening makes me think there should be some kind of dedicated npub for onboarding help with pinned bookmark notes and multiple hands behind the mask to help with the workload. Aggregate the content developed by other great nostr users like yourself, Ben, etc.
I've got over a decade helping IT techs and users with process documentation, onboarding, etc. Willing to help create/develop this idea. I'm just not a super user in all facets of nostr.
Is there any danger of these other apps compromising your private keys?
It's always possible 🤷 there are services that exist to help safeguard your private key like Amber.
FYI I say it's possible, but they are themselves trusted applications and devs.
Possible the same way it's possible for Amazon to get hacked and compromise your credit card.
i wouldn't go and stick my private key into any and all applications. some are more trusted than others. if you use Android, i would recommend using an application called Amber. it's a private key manager. it holds your key for you so that you don't have to give it to applications. sadly nothing like this exists on iOS. if you use a laptop or desktop, you can use a lot of nostr apps on the web and use a web browser extension to hold your private key and sign into apps that way. it's more secure than entering your key. check out https://nostrapps.com to see what else is offered. i use an extension called Nostr Connect.
I started looking into building a native iOS signer on Nostr today. I have some ideas.
Derek isnt NOSTORE the one for iOS?
correct!
I highly recommend always using a burner when testing new apps.
It makes no sense that we don’t have proper key management and delegation at the protocol level and built into the apps we use here every day.
Many keys will be lost and compromised as a result.
Correct 💯
does it have to be both apps?
No, he is suggesting two of many apps that you can try. They all work together since this is an open system that anyone can build on top of. Try nostr:npub1v5ufyh4lkeslgxxcclg8f0hzazhaw7rsrhvfquxzm2fk64c72hps45n0v5 , I use it everyday for podcasts 🙂
Fountain is great for podcasts and music. You can boost your favorite podcasts with small units of Bitcoin. Fountain has an embedded wallet you can use to fund your boosts. Your identity in Fountain is tied to the same identity used to comment in the Nostr client you're using right now. So if you post something in Fountain, maybe a comment on an episode of your favorite podcast, you can choose to also post that across the Nostr ecosystem.
Wavlake is a great place to go to discover new artists, comment, create playlists and provide immediate value to your favorite artists. It's like Spotify except musicians are not getting fractions of a penny for every song played, but direct value from you as the fan.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Fountain not being open source sadly is a dealbreaker for me :(
Is there any option to support podcasters v4v without the use of proprietary software?
Thank you so much for this great info. I’m new here thanks to nostr:npub1xr7t5h0l25ej73pm04zgz9afeexyzsjx67s5v0xxf2sshjn4sx6sep2gqh and don’t consider myself tech savvy at all but so willing to learn.
welcome! if you have any questions, please ask. maybe get started by watching this video and we'll move on from there? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA-jiiepOrE
Feeling silly, but where do I find the private key? I’m brand new here and fumbling my way around
That will vary based on the app you onboarded with but you would likely look in your account settings for the app for something either called nsec or private key. It will be a long string of text and numbers starting with "nsec"
it will be in your settings menu. settings, keys on primal for example.
Thank you so much! I’m watching some YouTube videos too. Feeling silly here, but I will figure it out and hopefully add a valuable new voice here too! Thanks again for your kindness
you're absolutely welcome. nostr is a bit techy, but freedom isn't free, nor easy 😉 it will get better as time goes on though.
Hi kids! So... New on the block. Listen to uncle Derek
The master key to your new decentralized internet full of cool people and content. 😁👍
absolutely. which is why you should practice safe nsecs and not give your key to just any application that wants it 😂
Hello I am new here and downloaded through primal. I never got any kind of key. Not public or private. Can you please tell me what I’m missing if you don’t mind.
in primal, go to settings, and then keys. you'll see your public key which is like your username that you share to other people and then you'll see your private key. that is like your password that you never share to others and you keep safe. don't go sticking it in any and all applications.
Its in your settings. One starts with NSEC this is your private key never share this anywhere!
The other starts with NPUB this is like your houses public address. You give this to others so they know how to find you. Best way to try and visualize it in your head.
Thank you!
important -- use only ONE private key, and don't switch to a new one
Thank you for this.
you're welcome. try it out and if you have questions, let me know. there are a LOT of other nostr apps. this is just one example 😉
I’m new. Thanks to nostr:npub1xr7t5h0l25ej73pm04zgz9afeexyzsjx67s5v0xxf2sshjn4sx6sep2gqh
Welcome 🖖🏼
get your wallet set up so we can zap you some sats!
welcome!
Can someone use their nPub rather than their nSec to those apps?
a lot of apps do allow you to sign in with your npub, but you can't actually publish or sign any events, it's essentially just read-only at that point.
Why hasn't Wavlake or Fountain implemented nsecbunker sign in or even Amber signer. Why are we still copy/pasting Nsecs?
Fountain has Amber on Android.
Thanks for the correction. I didn't see the bright yellow button.
you're welcome :P
FYI last time I tried Amber on fountain from fresh login and install it didn't work. That was a few weeks ago.
Podverse is more my style with self hosted node connection, but SHHH it's not nostr connected (yet)
they had a bug at one point in Amber or Fountain. the implementation has been fixed.
As time goes on, you will get better at explaining these tips to new users. Very clear and able to understand for them I think. This will help nostr grow 🫂🤞🏼
I’m so stoked. 😭 Decentralized social media is a genius idea and the system is so simple.
I have no idea how to navigate this platform and appreciate the info. Can you please explain Damus or Primal— I don’t think I have either of those— I signed up on this platform by downloading the app and following the prompts but do not recall either names you shared. What am I missing?
Nostore is great for using your nsec in different web clients. Not that anyone asked.
Coinos.io is a good started wallet that isnt as limiting as primal or yakihonne . Pair it with damus or amethyst and yoûre golden
Love it! Thanks Derek!
So is this becoming the new MySpace? I sure hope so.
So cool.
So I didn’t see this before I created a wavlake account. So instead of just signing in, I created a new account. Any suggestions on fixing this so they are linked?
You can't. Burn the "new" one & just sign in with your main nsec. 💁♂️
Every #Nostr app can simply use your main nsec; you only want to make a new npub/nsec if you're explicitly creating a new account for a specific purpose like testing or new branding. 🤙
Thanks for sharing! I am a musician with Distro to all major platforms. Which app would you suggest I get to share my music?
As a new Nostr user and a musician this is awesome info! Cheers Derek!
nostr:npub1xr7t5h0l25ej73pm04zgz9afeexyzsjx67s5v0xxf2sshjn4sx6sep2gqh is right, Nostr is pretty cool. I’m glad he recommended it.
Was looking for one to replace spotify, will try thanks.
nostr:nprofile1qqsr7acdvhf6we9fch94qwhpy0nza36e3tgrtkpku25ppuu80f69kfqpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qghwaehxw309aex2mrp0yhxummnw3ezucnpdejz7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09ug4n6q3 isn't it a bad idea to just copy/paste?
In my understanding, at least on Android, the actual keyboard in use (Google Keyboard for Example) can read the paste buffer?
Users should install thrustwothy keyboards bevore copy-pasting sensitive data, always.
That also applies to the nostr nsec.

yeah, on android it is best to use nostr:nprofile1qqswacu3amp428kj8wtpqf77yd2upukcn2ft4aycmxm5scmh359e0ssppemhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mp0qyg8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnddakj7qg4waehxw309aex2mrp0yhxgctdw4eju6t09uvt9vcv as most apps support it and then you don't end up copy pasting your secrets all around. also, use nostr:nprofile1qqs83nn04fezvsu89p8xg7axjwye2u67errat3dx2um725fs7qnrqlgzqtdq0 to install the different apps.
I’m the literal opposite of tech savvy and yes I’m here because of Ian too. I used this app to get on, but have no key etc.
i can never be this fluent in normie
Thank you. I feel like a teenager again discovering new music 🙂
I'll try nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgqgdwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkcqgswaehxw309ahx7um5wghxcctwvsq3qamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wwa5kuegpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduq3samnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwwdhx7un59eek7cmfv9kqz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9emkzanvv94k2tnrdaksqgpz2rmfd9xz5sujnem7ths0dfs6uh3h58hx663m4mchqmkejqfy3venzkam
GM 🍵 😃 ✌🏼
Didn’t realize Wavlake had an app…super cool. Do you just paste links to songs into a Nostr note or is there a way to share directly? Cant see how.
You can share links directly, or choose to publish your comments/zaps on the track.

@Wavlake is the exact opposite of being decentralized. Until they open their app and accept music from ALL the artists publishing, and not just those in their own platform, they will be a problem in the space.
This is very cool I'm new to this platform also. It's still a bit confusing for me but I hope with enough time playing around it'll clear up for me.
Welcome! It's a lot to take in. It's a large rabbit hole. Watch some of the talks and videos here to get started.
This is so cool. time to see what is really out here!
It's such a deep rabbit hole. Lots of fun things to play with. Enjoy! 🔥🔥🔥
any other things that I should checkout?
Thank you. I'm new #Nostr user. Just trying to understand how it works. I've bookmarked your post. I'm old school. It'll take some time for me to learn and understand everything.
