Good afternoon.

I published a new long-form article on Nostr on my homepage, to help inform people about all the cool things people are building here.

I'm going to go over it a few more times before I promote it on my other socials and email lists in the coming days (Nostr first!), so if anyone has any feedback, I can still potentially incorporate it.

Enjoy.

Thanks for writing this, Lyn! If it’s cool with you, I’d love to read this out loud on nostr:npub10qrssqjsydd38j8mv7h27dq0ynpns3djgu88mhr7cr2qcqrgyezspkxqj8

Sure feel free. Might do some tweaks on the text based on any feedback in the coming 24 hours, but wanted to get it out to Nostr readers first.

I’ll contain my excitement and wait until tomorrow or Monday to record it 🫡

Awesome, will def give this a read tomorrow morning 💜

You are a treasure! Thank you

Thank you Lyn. I'll check it out later tonight.

I’m 1/3 of the way though and it’s an excellent article.

I was explaining nostr to my best friend and his girlfriend this morning, and described it very much the same way. Your focus on interoperability is key - that’s what makes nostr the “everything killer”, because it doesn’t have to kill anything if everything can simply merge with Nostr.

Thanks for taking the time to focus on Nostr, and to write something very salient and new-user-friendly.

I’ll finish reading, and offer feedback if anything comes to me ✌️

I’ll read it, but I have a question. Do you know why we’re not allowed to follow as many people as we want? I noticed some of the relays begin malfunctioning if you follow too many people. Am I being disconnected from them, because they think I’m a bot?

likely an issue/bug with the client you're using. afaik, no limits on # of follows.

Yep could be

Early days bug will eventually solve in future

Fun Fact:

"When you use email, you are typically using a client built on top of a communication protocol called Simple Mail Transfer Protocol or “SMTP”. As a user, you don’t need to interact with the technical details of SMTP directly; you just need to know how to use your webmail client app of choice, like Gmail for example, and let it handle the technical details for you.

SMTP, being a public domain communication protocol, is owned by no one."

oh, Like what Nostr is trying to be, interesting comparison

Lyn, I love it and I'm almost done reading it now. Great writing and very easy to digest and I'm sure it'll be widely appreciated by everyone 😀.

Lyn Alden on Nostr all the time! Been following you for years and amazing to see everything.

thanks for the post and the promotion of nostr. ❤️ 💜 the global state sync can be achieved by 'tree of relays': https://highlighter.com/a/naddr1qvzqqqr4gupzp8lvwt2hnw42wu40nec7vw949ys4wgdvums0svs8yhktl8mhlpd3qqxnzdejxqmnqde5xqeryvej5s385z

nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a just wrote the best article about Nostr to date. It's extremely informative and hits the nail on the head for what Nostr is and what Nostr can mean for the world. Please give this a read and show your friends this article when onboarding them.

great article Lyn, you hit the sweet spot of technical while still approachable.

Thank you. This is helpful. Will send this to friends. Question for you: Is it true that you cannot delete a note/post on Nostr (due to content being on multiple relays)?

Yes, unless somehow it is removed from all accessible the relays.

This is a different dynamic from all other social media...inability to delete. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

which is impossible to ever be conpletely sure of nostr:npub1avszmzlpnns43ydv7gm7wm9eynwg5q5jlwk7yjlpjerwxfkek35szhplc4

That isn't true. There is a nip that allow you delete stuff, but isn't implemented because of reasons. Just ask the nostr:npub12rv5lskctqxxs2c8rf2zlzc7xx3qpvzs3w4etgemauy9thegr43sf485vg

There's an NIP for requesting relays to delete your content from their database, you mean. The nature of nostr really does make deletes largely meaningless

asking calle.... what?

this is great, i shared it outside of nostr

Good stuff. Going to send this to some normie friends. 👊🫂⚡️

Why would Primal need any level of personal information to create a lightning wallet... absolutely absurd!

That is why I refuse to use Primal. They're being cucks and perpetuating the old nanny state system

Great read. You really have a gift for putting things into a practical perspective.

Lyn that was fantastic. Best case I've read for #nostr. I thought your point on a decentralized payment graph was great. I also enjoy the technical level you right at. There aren't many writers writing at that level as good as you are.

Really enjoy this article! Will update my article with a link to this as a nostr explainer (my article being one I wrote comparing atproto and nostr)

I'm sharing this with my friends

Amazing to consider how immature we are as a species to rely on permissioned third party providers to facilitate the exchange of value.

The potential that Bitcoin and nostr unlock within the human race as we realize the ability to create and exchange value between one another is something I hope I am around to see.

What a bright orange, and purple, future it is.

Thank you Lyn!

Sweet article, you have an elegant way of explaining things. Thank you

Amazing job ! ❤️👏🏻

Well written, though I think perhaps a little too long as one piece.

Also, while I understand how multiple relays might delay the building of a captive market, I wasn't convinced that a captive market is out of the question. IIRC, google chat, once upon a time, incorporated XMPP. They had also developed "a better email" that was an open protocol, though it's name escapes me.

Yes, I can run my own SMTP server (snd I do), but it's definitely not for most people. It seems to me, there's a small group of companies hosting most email and that's enough for them.

And one more thought I had was, the more relays someone goes through, the more easily location triangulation is. AFAIK nostr does not use Dandelion++.

Great article! A balanced overview and very accessible. One thought that came to mind while reading section two was regarding friction. It might be helpful to include a brief discussion about how reducing friction may in some cases not be desirable. After all, friction, much like a tool is neither good or bad, but does greatly affect the way we interact with the world. For example, are there instances where frictionless payments via social graph might not be desired (e.g. political donations, unwanted influence or conflicts of interest, inability to refuse payment, etc.)? Or are these edge cases outweighed by the broader benefits?

It gets harder and harder to distinguish 'real' data (audio, video, photo) from AI generated one. The signing of this data with a private key and linking to it can help establish the source. Maybe add a few lines on elaborating how this helps establishing actual data from deep fakes?

I agree, like those on Instagram that steal others content. It's so annoying... Biggest thing I see is making sure you have the real npub for people... I have mine listed on other socials, I need to make a page on my personal domain that someone can verify (not that anyone would actually want to copy me) but we'll known personalities it's good to know they are not fake profiles. Right?

Hey Lyn, great to see you writing in the long-form space on Nostr . Check out the Nostr Obsidian plugin which will make your writing ➡️ publishing on Nostr experience even smoother 😃 keep em coming 😄

Hi Lyn, great read as usual from your hand! Question: if one switches client does it keep your wallet? Or do you need a fresh wallet for every client? Maybe you can add a little information about that, as it is important to know before you switch client or want to use multiple.

Two spelling mistakes I saw:

“Second, the the payee has to provide that payment information.” Twice the

“And there are other know people following that same Jeff Booth profile”. Known

Just trying to help…

When you release it on other platforms I am definitely going to share and promote it.

Have a great day!

Your wallet is listed on your profile and is the same regardless of which client you use as long as you are logging in with the same nsec... Also some clients make it easy to have multiple profiles that each can have their own wallet. I have 3 different ones and toggle between them frequently on Amethyst which is my main client. Not sure how to do it on others but it's pretty cool... So I have this profile, nostr:npub1d9t8g0ahhqh554pzwatdq4q2jlqhmzx2e6vtjp9ay620ggf2cjus2whnfc and nostr:npub1llv0f7yfsk9fx4kr87ndjqz9flwmetx3zcg3r997y299qvhu3ecqncdqsm

All 3 have a different wallet... When I log onto desktop I use the alby plug-in and mostly use primal.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for explaining. Maybe Lyn could make it clear in her text for the noobs (like me). 😁

Hi Lyn,

Not sure what you mean by:

"In other words, Nostr separates the client layer from the public domain communication protocol layer for social media, in a similar (and even more thorough) way that webmail clients separate the client layer from the SMTP public domain communication protocol layer for email.”

In what sense is it more thorough?

It’s a great read, thanks!

Moid

Lyn really did a big deal.

A couple things:

- this Nostr layer should eventually take *all* communication, social media, texts, and email, and converge. It should just be that you message someone (there's no distinction between text and email) or you message everyone (social media).

- Jack Dorsey's comments about *not* open sourcing the protocol (I think he said something about it being too technical for people to recognize problems) but giving the users choice was the desired outcome. Jack, why not both? The choice thing makes sense, but not the desire to keep the algorithm closed source. That sounds like Jack has something to hide.

been working through this. fantastic read so far. really enjoy your content and insight!

Your article is probably the best explanation of nostr I’ve seen in a while

Like this.. Also since that npub is listed on your website, basically guarantees your profile is real right?

Nice article, thanks. I just joined and was looking for an explanation.

You wrote about the possibility of using different tokens. Is it possible to create NFTs here?

Thanks Lyn for another helpful explainer article. I have two comments:

a) You seem to like the Primal Nostr client but it appears that in order to connect a wallet you need to supply personal info such as name & email & shoe size etc.?

b) The upside of a 'global' payment address/account list is clear from the examples you give, however I do wish there was some way to prevent unwanted funds (& NFTs etc.) being added to your wallet; I hope the ability to do this blocking may come with future smart wallets.

I would like a detailed guide on wallets. I am a noob in this ecosystem and am used to Ethereum, where you have 1 address for all occasions 😅

Love the article. I think there should be disclosure of your relationship to ego death and primal at the bottom of the article.

awesome article!

You sure you want to refer to X as Twitter?

i saw the article thats a cool mention for the platform. i think nostr does more because its its own platform but https://pls.fyi allows you to create a signed namespace and put all your social media links or payment there. It uses the pulsechain EVM blockchain. Just different ways of similar goals. there are actual apps out on nostr so exicited about that. it seems different crypto and web communities are having similar ideas for decentralization, censorship resistance, and authenticated identity. Way cool Lyn! You get to be our spokeswoman and we have a purple ostrich as our mascott!

Typo: ‘and there are other KNOW people following(..)’

Hey Lyn, still trying to understand what incentives people/companies have to host servers for storing nostr data? It's not like P2P sharing, correct? So how/where does the data get stored? Thanks

If you think about what the digital fabric of information, knowledge, time, and money should look like in an ideal world there's just no way to not see #Nostr and #Bitcoin as far superior approaches to what (most of us) grew up with.

Lyn's article is great at explaining this. It takes brain washing - in a good sense - and unlearning what has been indoctrinated to get there, but it's worth it.

Great read thanks for sharing 🙏

Excellent, Lyn, thank you so much for this help!!!
